Funeral Procession of Sacco and Vanzetti: August 28, 1927; Narration: Robert D'Attilio

Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were Boston Italian Anarchists, workingmen falsely accused of murder in 1919. They were to soon become a principal organizing effort for The Community Church of Boston during the first years of its remarkable history. Mrs. Gertrude Winslow, one of the church's founding mothers, became friends with Vanzetti, visited him numerous times at the Dedham Jail, gave him English classes, and was in Italy visiting his family, when news of their execution came across the wires in August, 1927. Sacco and Vanzetti remain emblazoned in the memory and the calendar of events at CCB. Since 1976, the church has given an Annual Sacco and Vanzetti Award to notable social activist folks, both in the national and the Boston arenas. Winners include: William Kunstler, Scott and Helen Nearing, Leonard Peltier, Mumia Abu Jamal, Cesar Chavez, David Dellinger, Rachel Corrie, Chuck Turner, Mel and Joyce King, Medea Benjamin, Kathy Kelly, and many more.
