The song is about mourning- his lover has died, he "could not forsee this thing happening to you" the black cars are a funeral cortege with "flowers and my loved one never to come back" all the references to black, the colour associated with funerals, are about bereavement. It is hard to pick up the meaning because the music is so upbeat. Other tracks you might like - gimme shelter , sympathy for the devil ( which is NOT sympathetic to the devil) , midnight rambler , Ruby Tuesday and wild horses . they are a brilliant band and you only have six decades of their music to catch up on !!!!

Upbeat? It's fast, it's hardly upbeat. It's almost frightening.

Great reaction man, to a stone cold classic. The sitar was played by Stones founder Brian Jones. From that early Stones period, you might want to check out "Ruby Tuesday", "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Get Off Of My Cloud", "Under My Thumb", "Lady Jane", "Play With Fire", "Sympathy For The Devil", "Midnight Rambler", "Gimme Shelter", "Stray Cat Blues", "No Expectations", "2000 Light Years From Home", "We Love You", "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction".
    Happy listening.

The lyric video gets it wrong the last few verses. It's "I want to you to paint it, paint it black, black as night, black as coal. I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky." Brian Jones, founder of the group, plays the sitar and acoustic guitar. Keith Richards plays electric guitar, Bill Wyman, bass, Charlie Watts, drums. The song is about the singer's lover, dying unexpectedly and his inability to find any joy in all his dark mourning and grief. It's Middle Eastern vibe is unmistakable. Brian Jones, in particular, was a musical explorer, and he is probably the Godfather of World Music. Check out Brian Jones Presents The Pipes of Pan at Jajouka. An incredible field recording of selected pieces by the Master Musicians of Jajouka, re-engineered by Brian in the studio using phasers and other studio tricks. It's really a fantastic album.

@@trishc3099 I am a huge fan an there are a couple that I can't stand as well. With them its love or hate there doesn't seem to be any middle ground. There is also one song that I will never be able to identify because I was much younger and quite stoned from pot and acid. The song made me want to hide my head under a pillow and not come out again, but I wont be able to figure out what it was no matter how hard I try. So glad I grew up and grew out of that phase but I will always identify the Stones as the group that caused that fear.

    • @trishc3099

I spent my entire senior year in high school pretty much stoned, drunk or both, and I consider myself lucky to have even survived that year. I even graduated third in my class and I still haven't figured out how that happened. 😏 But I've never done acid. From what I've heard though it can be pretty intense.

I'm not sure any rock song has ever expressed bereavement and grief on a level with this one.
Maybe I'm wrong but I think that's an electric sitar, which is just an attachment to an electric guitar lending it that sitar jangle.

You have seen Supertramp do “Rudy” live. I liked the way you smiled during the train ride. Now… I strongly recommend “Child Of Vision” do a studio version first, then see it performed live. My favorite piano solo I ever saw performed live twice.

Its about a girlfriend who died......for sure....now I always thought it was also because he had gotten her pregnant(like a new born baby it just happens everyday)...and either she died of an abortion gone wrong, or during childbirth....at any rate, in either case.....(people see him and just turn away[in disgust])...this scenario does make sense of the lyrics.....

It’s just a dark song 🤣😂🤣 I’ve been listening to the Stones for about 50 years and have seen them in concert 16 times. Many reactors do this song early in their introduction to the Stones. For me, it’s not a good place to start. In the context of a full album or live concert, it’s a rockin’ tune that fits in well. As a one-off choice, I think it’s not representative of their overall vibe. Admittedly, this has changed many times over the nearly 60 years they have been at it but it seems intentionally at the far dark extreme of what they have done.
This was in no way a poor reaction. I enjoyed it, actually. It was a song choice I wish had come farther into your exploration of the Stones is all I am saying.
