    The backup singer was phoned up in the middle of the night and she belted out that magic in her bathrobe and rollers in her hair. She totally killed it! Her name is Merry Clayton.

      @ronaldelliott4373 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      One more fact. She was pregnant at the time. Sometimes the stars align and magic happens. 🤘😎

    At 3:23 after Mary’s voice cracks you can hear Mick Jagger go “Woo!”

    The great Merry Clayton, as the story goes, went into a N.Y. recording studio in the middle of the night while pregnant and laid down one of the great vocal performances in rock history. Her voice cracking twice when soloing is legendary in the minds of those of us around at the time. 60yrs of Stones work? It’s gonna take time to get through the best of their catalog. 😉

    That is the most famous busted note in music history, as far as I know. Amazing backing performance from the great Merry Clayton.

    BANG.... This one is Outta Here. Another Home Run Hit. I saw the Stones live in 1989. What A Show they put on. I consider them the 2nd Greatest Rock Band Of All Time.... second only to The Beatles

    Mary Clayton hits it outta the park with her vocals. The song works so well because of her

    • @fuchsiaswing8545
      @fuchsiaswing8545 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      She’s a crucial component, but she’s given too much credit. Charlie drives this song with great tempo and plays with some muscle. His thudding drum fills emphasize the dark underlays of the song.

    • @fuchsiaswing8545
      @fuchsiaswing8545 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Moreover, Keef’s tremolo guitar rhythm in the intro and Jimmy Miller’s percussion arrangements are all far more integral features than Merry’s voice. She’s just the cherry on top. Without the other elements, we don’t have a song!

    • @Mike-gn4un
      @Mike-gn4un ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fuchsiaswing8545 You’re spot on Fuchsia. No disrespect to Merry but without that driving riff and haunting lyrics and vocals by Mick the song wouldn’t be the same

    "Their stuff seems to have a deeper meaning" , yeah, The Stones weren't afraid of anything. Like your style young man, let it play & you seem to get most of the tunes.

    Mary Clayton was pregnant when she did the backing vocals. She also suffered a miscarriage the very next day, which adds another level of intensity to this song.

    Hey JM, you're hitting some home runs with your selections. Step up to the plate and hit a Grand-Slam with this. A Classic Rock Icon from 1967. I saw them do it live when I was 14 years old and it was awesome, BUT this performance will make you want to stand and applaud.....Procol Harum "A Whiter Shade of Pale", live in Denmark 2006. BTW, the band name means "Far from these things" in Latin

  • @somersetcace1
    @somersetcace1 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The lyrics to this song is kind of a take off of a very common phrase at the time. "Make Love, Not War." If you think it through, what he's saying is that it's as simple as a kiss vs a shot. And yeah, Mary Clayton's part is iconic.

    Another historic anti-war song from this era that is still true today is War Pigs by Black Sabbath .It is still happening today.

  • @guidosarducci

    Excellent reaction, man...I agree with your analysis. Thank you.

  • @audiofile8833
    @audiofile8833 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    There's a LOT of great anti-war songs from that era. Black Sabbath did War Pigs, Creedence Clearwater Revival had Fortunate Son, and so on and so forth. You don't hear songs like that anymore. I guess people got tired of protesting war.
    I'm glad you're reacting to songs that I've loved and known by heart for quite a few decades, and you're reacting to a wide variety of music. And that's what music is all about.
    My main music genres, the stuff I listen to the most, are probably classic rock, blues, r&b, soul and funk. That's the stuff I grew up with, courtesy of FM radio and HUGE record stores. And we didn't stream songs. We usually bought the entire album, and as a result we experienced a lot of different music. Mustapha and Fat Bottomed Girls off of Queen's Jazz album is a good example.
    You're walking off the beaten path you're used to and are being exposed to vast catalogs of music. And I applaud that. Some people say that they feel sorry for you because you hadn't heard of a given band or song. I look at it differently. I envy you for your journey ahead. I wish with all my heart, sometimes, that I could hear them for the first time, again. Enjoy it!

    How about a reaction to the man who turned down the chance to be a Roll8ng Stone? That would be the legendary Rory Gallagher. Rory was a musician's musician and his fans include Slash, Brian May, the Edge and many more. Rory was a force of nature on stage and could make his Strat sing, cry and scream. Try taking a listen to " Do You Read Me?" from the 1979 Rock Goes to College performance for a sample of his explosive energy. Thanks!

    If you were to ask Mick Jagger, I'm pretty sure he would say 'watch the official video first. Then you can watch us live or whatever.' I mean, why else would they have made it? Anyway, I'm glad you did because from now on, original releases are the only reactions I will watch. I don't care how good the performance is and with who. It's about relating your reaction to mine. Your reaction to a different version is like comparing your apples to my oranges. It would have no value for me.

    I miss the drummer Charlie wats. I just realized recently why I prefer The Rolling Stones to Led Zeppelin. Even though LZ had great songs and guitarist. It’s because the drummer used cymbal a lot which made the sound more messy to me. I like the simplicity of the RS.
