Trout & Grayling Flies Tying Tutorial - Olive Perdigon Nymph

As winter sets in and trout fishing is a distant memory, I thought I'd share with you some of my favourite trout and grayling flies that I use for my own fishing and guiding. These videos will be super relaxed and always contain tying tips and beginners advice for those new to the fly tying world too!
As the videos build up over the weeks I'll be adding giveaways and competitions as a thanks to those who tune in, so keep an eye out!

Hook: size 14 Jig hook
Bead: 3.5’mmm slotted, copper
Tail: coq de Leon
Body: Semperfli micro glint tinsel, olive.
Wing Bud: Gulf black resin
Finish: Gulf Thinman

Do you ever add lead wire for more weight to sink the fly faster? How does one hide the wire so as not to make the fly get too front end bulky and ruin the profile?

Not usually in this pattern John. But if I did, I’d recommend a very thin, flat lead.
This would keep a pretty decent tapered profile with some extra weight to it, without adding too much bulk to the body

I use a bit of thin, round lead in mine up by the head. 3 or 4 turns, make sure the tags are tucked and you just adjust your taper accordingly. Full disclosure though…I only do this because I want to add a bit of bulk without affecting the sink rate. I like a bulkier, buggier, more 3D perdigon and in order to fish the fly deep as intended, it needs a bit more weight. That’s what the lead is there for…
