  • This video is a continuation of my miniseries on Bang & Olufsen Beolab Penta speakers. In this video I show how to replace the capacitors on the Beolab Penta 2 display.
    Chapters:
    0:00 Introduction & Overview
    0:11 How to remove display screen cover
    2:24 Removing the display
    3:08 Removing the board assembly
    4:21 Comparing Beolab Penta display screen versions
    7:30 Having a closer look at the assembly
    17:18 Look at capacitor values
    18:59 Comparing old capacitors to new capacitors
    21:56 Cleaning the board and fitting new capacitors
    Constructive feedback is welcomed in the comments. Thank you for taking the time to view.

    Excellent work! This is exactly what I was looking for before recapping the displays on my mark 2’s.

    My bang & Olufsen receiver to my Penta 2 speakers. I now have to use the speaker cable because the data cable does not seem to want to work it. Whether it be 4 pins to 1 speaker or 8 pins from speaker to speaker. But instead I have to use the speaker line input from the receiver. Before it went completely out I used to be able to get sound out of one of the speakers and the other one worked but I used to have to turn it way up till it came on turn it down and then sometimes it up and down a few times. Does this sound like a common occurrence and if so what's a quick or some what do I do to remedy that. The speaker sounded so much better through the 4 and 8 pin cables. I don't know if it's using the on speaker amplifier or the speaker amplifier from this receiver itself at this point. And I noticed that the green light at the bottom is on all the time.

    Nice work as always. The display cover is from Penta MK3 not Penta Mk2.Someone has changed them or was it you perhaps. They should be light green and thus very easy to read. Dark display makes it very dim and hard to read if the light comes straight on.

      You are almost correct! They've been taken form a pair of Mk1 Vox speakers, I preferred them to the golden/yellow colour that the MK2s originally had.

      @@vladanpopovic8117 I believe everything else is totally original, I purchased these from the original owner who had had the amps serviced once over the years, but other than that I believe they to be in totally original and lovely condition. you're right in the sense I have some Mk1 and the grill fabric feels a bit thin on those.

    I have the same displays on my BL3000, but they are very dim, one is completely off, but the displays itself are working, wich can be seen with a flashlight shining on them.
    Has that something to do with these capacitors?
    And where is the potmeter for?
    Thanks!

      Hey, I actually have a pair of BL3000s and one of my displays does weird things. It goes to all pixels populated, making it unreadable. Either something is blanking the data OR it's a contrast issue and the pot might be bad or something like that. Either way I plan to strip them down and do the rebuild treatment on them, but it won't be imminent. I'd happily do a video on these displays and hopefully help you but it won't be until next year.
      If your displays are very dim and you want to try and fix in the mean time I would take a guess it's actually the light sensor that has failed. I think I mentioned it in my video at 9:13. I would imagine that has failed to dark room mode so the screen is dimmer. Check the resistance output between the legs of that whilst covering it and shining a light at it to see if the value changes.
      Thanks, take care and good luck!

    Hi David, what improvement does it give changing those caps on the display board?

    • @TheRetroBristolian
      @TheRetroBristolian  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely no change for me what so ever! Surprisingly my screens were faultless before and after. I find this odd considering how 'out of tolerance' some capacitors were, but seemingly it doesn't matter that much. I did the video in response to someone on Beoworld asking how to do it. :-)
      I'm really looking forward to testing the Penta 2 display against the Penta 3 display soon.

      @@TheRetroBristolian exactly what I thought. Never changed caps on that part of the lab Penta's. What other changes do you expect to see except the lcd and dot matrix?

    • @TheRetroBristolian
      @TheRetroBristolian  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leslienelwan I would expect the source names to be different. for example the Penta 1 would be TP1 for Tape 1, Peta 2 would say A-Tape, Penta 3 would also be A-Tape. but I think for SAT/DTV Penta 2 is V-Sat and Penta 3 would just sat SAT. What I'm trying to prove is that the source names is stored in a chip on the display assembly and not in the amp. I then want to see if I can pull the code off the chip, and then I want to do a project of using an Arduino behind a replacement display to provide similar features but with your choice of source names

      To be precise their are tree transistors marked T5, T6, T7 on one of the boards that is where the dark smoke was seen looks like a blown transistor
