Tune the 8th string down a whole step. It’ll put you in a drop tuning and that 8th string will now be an octave below the 6th string, which is tuned to e.

    • @TheDeadmandillon
      @TheDeadmandillon หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Ahh yes! A tuning that Tosin Abasi and I believe Javier Rejas(?) use. Ideal suggestion.

@@TheDeadmandillonAllegaeon use this tuning for their 8s as well. Drop E is pretty practical considering a lot of metal guys solo in the key of E minor, or a variation of that. So it makes sense as an easy way to fly around on an 8 string.

Thank you very much for the positive words. Tyler's guitar was already finished about 3.5 years ago and it was supposed to be used to support the campaign. It was more important to solve, despite the huge problem that arose, how to make and deliver their guitar to all the people who ordered it. Actually, there are still a few people left, but we have everything sorted out and we are nearing the end. Therefore, the guitar could already be sent to Tyler. Once again, thank you very much, Ondřej.

You're absolutely welcome. Nowadays it's rarer to see people hold to good morals and do right by others. Seeing your apology to him was very heartwarming! I've already been browsing your site and as a Telecaster player, I'm actually intrigued by making one as a 7 string since that's an option you have. Hoping for greater things for your business, keep it up!

„Nearing the end“ is what we „few left“ are hearing since 2021.
I mean, the guitars are obviously great. The production time and especially customer service / communication is the worst I have ever discovered. The pure fact, that I as a customer who has payed money for an instrument 3,5 years ago, needs to wait months (!) for my email to be answered while a reaction to a TH-cam video happens like instantly, is absolutely wild.

That F# tuning is considered "standard" for an 8-string (being called F# standard), and you can also drop-tune the low 8th string (drop E). I believe Meshuggah only uses F standard (1/2 step down on all 8 strings) and drop Eb (F standard drop-tuned).

First guitar that I bought for myself was an 8 string Strandberg, and the learning curve from 6 to 8 strings was pretty steep, but I stuck with it and learned a few songs/ riffs and since, it has become my absolute favorite guitar, where I can get as heavy as DOOM riffs with slight down tuning, and beautiful melodic leads, 8 strings are my favorite guitar right now and I stand by that, after owning everything from 6-8.

If you want more 8 string bands to listen to rather than the usual suspects, I suggest you check out music from Little Tybee, Deftones, and Beyond Creation. I would even suggest listening to some of Uli Jon Roth's 8 string flamenco work as well just to get an idea for everything that's possible with an 8 string guitar. Tyler, your use of language when talking about 8 string music and referring to it as a "tradition" of music brought a smile to my face. A lot of the heavier stuff using extended range instruments catches so much flack, and its cool to hear somebody who isn't necessarily super embeded in that scene still come from a place of open mindedness and respect. Thats the sign of a musician who wants more than anything to continue learning! Edit: Totally forgot to add my recommendation! Check out Berzerker by the band after the burial, its got a perfect combination of shred/riffage and absolutely stupid down tuned rhythmic madness. Its not necessarily a deep cut but it is pretty old at this point, i think its from around 2008-2010? So while they arent necessarily inventers in the scene, id argue they are some really important innovators.

New guitar company for me to check out, thanks Tyler!
Try out F standard, what Meshuggah mostly play in. I also really like Drop E and Drop D#. Lower than that I usually use the transpose feature on my Neural DSP plugins or a pitch shifter. Happy shredding!

Solid work! You must check out Sleep Token. On a side note, I’ve actually been tuning my 7-string to CGCFADD. It’s more of a 6-string approach but the doubled high string produces this extra jangly, 12 string-like vibe.

I am currently writing an album on my 8 string with a tuning of EAEADGBE so it is standard tuning with the two lower strings in EA again allowing me to copy a riff from one EA to the next. The 7th string mixed with the 6th string allows me to play power chords like a drop A tuning too

Everyone usually craps on extended range guitars until they actually sit with them for a bit. I use a 9 string guitar regularly. It actually helps with dexterity. Switching back to a 6 string makes it feel easier for some reason.

For small 8 string guitar bands, I can recommend the Copenhagen based boys from Cold Night For Alligators, they are so much more than the typical djent

definitely check out The Dali Thundering Concept. They put all 8 strings through the paces in super creative ways.

Aw man I ed tune that Bad boy to drop A with an E on the lowest string ! Opens lots of possibilities with octaves on the first 4 strings

Finally some music made with an 8 string that isn't Prog or Djent. I mean Djent is great but I wish people would use these guitars in other styles. Apart from than Batushka, Deftones and Justin Broadrick it's not that common.
Also if you want to play with tunings, you can also go to drop E or open tunings like E B E G# B G# B E

another very commonly used tuning i see ppl use on 8 strings is drop E: E,A,E,A,D,G,B,e
rob scallon once uses a modded version of FACGCE which was F,C,F,A,C,G,C,e
    both sound sick imo

Try double drop EA as in EAEADGBe so you have a standard 6 string and 2 bass strings in EA
