Tune the 8th string down a whole step. It’ll put you in a drop tuning and that 8th string will now be an octave below the 6th string, which is tuned to e.

    • @TheDeadmandillon

@@TheDeadmandillonAllegaeon use this tuning for their 8s as well. Drop E is pretty practical considering a lot of metal guys solo in the key of E minor, or a variation of that. So it makes sense as an easy way to fly around on an 8 string.

Thank you very much for the positive words. Tyler's guitar was already finished about 3.5 years ago and it was supposed to be used to support the campaign. It was more important to solve, despite the huge problem that arose, how to make and deliver their guitar to all the people who ordered it. Actually, there are still a few people left, but we have everything sorted out and we are nearing the end. Therefore, the guitar could already be sent to Tyler. Once again, thank you very much, Ondřej.

You're absolutely welcome. Nowadays it's rarer to see people hold to good morals and do right by others. Seeing your apology to him was very heartwarming! I've already been browsing your site and as a Telecaster player, I'm actually intrigued by making one as a 7 string since that's an option you have. Hoping for greater things for your business, keep it up!

„Nearing the end“ is what we „few left“ are hearing since 2021.
I mean, the guitars are obviously great. The production time and especially customer service / communication is the worst I have ever discovered. The pure fact, that I as a customer who has payed money for an instrument 3,5 years ago, needs to wait months (!) for my email to be answered while a reaction to a TH-cam video happens like instantly, is absolutely wild.

That F# tuning is considered "standard" for an 8-string (being called F# standard), and you can also drop-tune the low 8th string (drop E). I believe Meshuggah only uses F standard (1/2 step down on all 8 strings) and drop Eb (F standard drop-tuned).

I want to get an 8 string so I can tune it up. Most people want to get as low as possible, but I think the massive amount of strings and the naturally longer scale would be cool and fun to tune up because you can get higher than normal notes, while keeping a low range. I'd love to see someone tune up an 8 string too! Imagine putting 6s or 7s on and tuning to F or even F# standard. I want it!!
(F and F# would be referring to the highest string, I guess it would be better to say Eb for the low 8.)

First guitar that I bought for myself was an 8 string Strandberg, and the learning curve from 6 to 8 strings was pretty steep, but I stuck with it and learned a few songs/ riffs and since, it has become my absolute favorite guitar, where I can get as heavy as DOOM riffs with slight down tuning, and beautiful melodic leads, 8 strings are my favorite guitar right now and I stand by that, after owning everything from 6-8.

It's good to see an 8 string used to make actual music instead of just chugging away at the lowest string. If you want more 8 string bands to listen to rather than the usual suspects, I suggest you check out music from Little Tybee, Deftones, and Beyond Creation. I would even suggest listening to some of Uli Jon Roth's 8 string flamenco work as well just to get an idea for everything that's possible with an 8 string guitar. I look forward to hearing what else you can come up with.

Tyler, your use of language when talking about 8 string music and referring to it as a "tradition" of music brought a smile to my face. A lot of the heavier stuff using extended range instruments catches so much flack, and its cool to hear somebody who isn't necessarily super embeded in that scene still come from a place of open mindedness and respect. Thats the sign of a musician who wants more than anything to continue learning! Edit: Totally forgot to add my recommendation! Check out Berzerker by the band after the burial, its got a perfect combination of shred/riffage and absolutely stupid down tuned rhythmic madness. Its not necessarily a deep cut but it is pretty old at this point, i think its from around 2008-2010? So while they arent necessarily inventers in the scene, id argue they are some really important innovators.

Based on the incredible piece of music you wrote with this thing, I’d say you were using it right… whether or not it was how it was MEANT to be used. Nice guitar, and good job!

If you wanted an easy tuning, drop the F# down to E and have fun. My favorite 8 string tuning is either E or D#

One common tuning for 8 string is "Double Drop D".

What a great song!!! Love the melody!!! Just a perfect song for this type of guitar!!! Love the fact that you did a whole song and not just some bits of playing here and there!!! The guitar looks awesome.

Solid work! You must check out Sleep Token. On a side note, I’ve actually been tuning my 7-string to CGCFADD. It’s more of a 6-string approach but the doubled high string produces this extra jangly, 12 string-like vibe.

there's a really cool tuning where you drop the F# to a E and drop the B string to a A. lots of cool octave stuff going on there.

dont know if this still counts but the band VOLA uses a 7 string tuned down to F# and they make the most beautiful music. The kind that makes you wanna lie down up on a tree branch at 2am to listen to

    Bad Ass guitar there🤘🏻Another tuning for you, F b F b e G C F
I do this so any 6 string songs I have in drop b flat tuning ends up in between the 1st and 8th string. On my 9 string I use the same tuning but the 9th string ends up being C F b F b e C G F

That's a cool guitar! I personally feel like anything beyond 7-strings I feel like I should be playing a Stick. Maybe that just my personal limitations as a musician, so I don't shame anyone for playing them.
But if you want more of a bass-like sound, dropping the bottom string to E (a la Tosin Abasai) will get you there.

Can you do a video on using 7 and or 8 string guitars? A lot of people who do “tutorials” just down tune the last string which in my opinion kinda loses the purpose of having the extra string. If not on TH-cam could you put it on guitar super system lol

I would enjoy it if more 8-string players approached the instrument in this way. As for bands, I recommend the band Animals as Leaders, who also are known to have invented some of the now well known 8-string techniques.

I am currently writing an album on my 8 string with a tuning of EAEADGBE so it is standard tuning with the two lower strings in EA again allowing me to copy a riff from one EA to the next. The 7th string mixed with the 6th string allows me to play power chords like a drop A tuning too

You did an awesome thing there. That was a great song you wrote. Simple yet simply complex. A nice hook and melody. I really liked what I would call the C section of the song. It fit nicely and kept my ears hungry.
That was a good one. Maybe you can keep at this song - figure how to add some tap n slap section and a bit of brief fireworks and chaos in the solo, after and then before the beautiful sounding stuff already here and you will have an excellent piece to perform live.
I really like it and would be excited to see you continue to develop this one.
    * or you keep it as is and write some vocals for it. Right now to me, it is at a stage where it seems unsure if it should be an instrumental or if it vocals are missing.

I’ve been intrigued by the 8 string guitar ever since watching Jose Macario’s “Taco Groove” over 10 years ago…
Of course he has taken it much much further, but personally I haven’t pulled the trigger yet on a Strandberg Boden 8 as of yet 🌟
