if i remember correctly, the grandmother's character was completely changed to match julie andrew's public image because they didn't want bad publicity for her. the grandmother in the books is apparently a lot meaner, like actually mean to mia.

I don't think she was mean so much as...snobby? She grew up with a certain world view and certain expectations. I don't think she was mean, so much as she didn't know any different. But, it wasn't changed for her public image. She is hugely famous and they wanted her to have a bigger role, so she took on the supportive figure role that Mia's father had in the books so that she would have more screen time.
True. I watched the movies before I read my beloved books - she's a freaking witch in the books. Like pure evil. I was chocked when I read the books.

Well it's not that hard, I mean the first film is based on the books, while the second film strays so it's not exactly canon in terms of the original story, in the books she ends up with Michael.

My favorite part of the movie is when they go mattress surfing down the stairs. When I was a little girl, my brothers and sister would go down the stairs in mail boxes. Not the kind that the mail man delivers mail to but those white plastic boxes. They slid so well.

I wanted to do this so bad but my stairwell was enclosed by walls and very narrow so the twin mattress was the exact size of the hall meaning it didn’t slide very much it just sat there lol.

I was in The Princess Diaries! I'm the 13 year old on the trolley in the striped shirt, close up shot with another kid right after Mia rolls the Mustang down the hill and crashes into the trolley car. My head was 8 feet tall on the big screen and it was my claim to fame for the rest of middle school :)
My favorite part: 'Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent.' I was struggling with my self esteem when first seeing this movie and that saying helped me so much!
Favorite moment was when she brought all the kids to join parade and made a home for them

Tbh I wanted the princess diaries to be a TV show so that it could actually be like the books. I mean I like the movie but they only followed the idea of the book. Mia is a Star Wars crazy nerd writer in the books and her getting together with Michael was way more romantic and creative

I love how Mia uses slang and things around her grandmother and it always like confuses. Her the tower scene, but also "i want to show you my baby" and her grandmother is just like O_O whaat?

15 years? This movie came out when I was like 2, and it remains one of my favorite childhood movies! I remember in the sequel I always loved the part where Mia is playing with the paper fans that I used to try to recreate that scene when I'm bored.
My favorite moment is when Mia pushed that ice cream cone into Lana's cheerleader uniform, cause she was making fun of Jeremiah. Lana turned to Ms. Gupta for help, asking if she saw what Mia did and her answer was priceless "No. Honey I didn't. I was in a very important meeting. Send it out for dry cleaning" Lana got coned! Lana got coned!
I was wondering how different the story would be is Michael would been there? I love Nicholas, he was such a charm, and I also felt in love with him when they ran away the day before her wedding (such a romantic scene in the lake), I think he is that prince charming we all deserve in life 😂, BUT Michael is Michael I mean, for me and my sister, he was our first boyfriend 😂😂😂😂😂 he'll always have space in my heart.

JJ Spooner I love them both and being honest when I went to the movies to watch the 2nd, I went out so grumpy and mad with Mia for replaced Michael for Nicholas, my mom sit with me to explained me tht people grow up and change, and maybe Michael and Mia had different paths, and eventhough Mia met Nicholas, Michael would be always her first love and no one would ever change that.
And since then I felt free to love Nicholas xD....I was 14 tho...LOL
Actually, the books are WAY different than the movie. And when I say way different I really mean it. I would say the movie is just inspired by the books. The plot of Princess Diaries the Movie are just little problems Mia has dealt with in the books, but there is no book that has the same story line as the movies. I'm halfway done with Forever Princess, which is the last book in the original series. There is another book Meg Cabot came out with called Royal Engagement I believe. I've only read the summary, and apparently SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT IF YOU ARE READING PRINCESS DIARIES SPOILER ALERT mia and michel are planning an engagement SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT anyway, so I'm unsure if there is a runway scene. But I ten out of ten recommend you read the books, they are amazing. No, it won't ruin the movies for you, it will make you love them more!

Another fact about Mia (pre-transformation), the rest of the cast who played high school students only saw her as that Mia and reportedly got very confused to why Anne Hathaway got the part. They claimed 'she was not pretty with her big hair and glasses. Being very clumsy, how did she actually get the leading role?' (Paraphrasing). This is because they only saw Anne Hathaway in Mia's pre-transformation scenes. It was only after her transformation that they got to see her real hair and her without glasses, therefore understanding that it was fake. I saw it in an interview with Anne Hathaway or Heather Matarazzo. If i find the video again I will comment in on this but yeah.
Um she was back in school transformed, so that makes no sense. I have a hard time believing the actors wouldn't know the plan.

Kaoteni I mean, Nicholas _is_ *Chris Pine* I loved the movie, But it's just not. congruent at all with the Mia _Mia_ . I suppose if you haven't read the books it's not really that troubling. Thing is in the films, They did n't even give Michael a chance. They kind off just pushed away as this "high school crush" when it's so beyond that. He's an amazing character that was just left unexplored.

Anne Hathaway drew inspiration for her character from (my personal favorite) real life princess-Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden :) In fact, the dress she wore to the dinner party in the first movie is based on the dress Victoria wore to the 1997 Nobel Prize Gala.

After reading all the books I was sad to find out that Disney killed off her father. He is alive in the books but does have cancer. The books are also more elicit. But... y'know Disney.

I think there are 2 reasons. 1- it is often used as a "comfort" food and she was highly stressed, 2- her manners were very very unprincesslike: the extra big bites on her spoon and a bit of ice cream on the edge of her mouth etc.

Meg Cabot (author of the book) was born in Bloomington, Indiana. She used a compilation of Geneva and a town just north of Bloomington (called Monrovia) to come up with Genovia.
