I think as long as you keep out of endgame content. Mabi is perfect. As someone that never got to endgame, but got to a good guild that took me to a few endgame places, the min-maxing you can do is insane to get the best of the best gear, which can only be used for endgame content anyway, because the rest of the game just melts to it.
outside of combat, you can just do whatever the fuck you want, and i think that freedom is truly unlimited, because there is just so much more than combat to do. I prefer combat content over everything else, but i've know people that just played this game for crafting and fashion, and they were absolutely packed with stuff to do. You don't get that type of content everywhere

As a casual player who used to play competitive games, I enjoyed mabinogi in ways were having fun is not always about winning or proving something. That games exist to offer enjoyment and winning or competing with others and defeating strong enemies is not the only way to enjoy games. More often times I had more fun losing, struggling, laughing at every mistake I make or barely surviving cause I'm the idiot that preferred to try things blindly and try to figure things out along the way simply cause I'm too lazy and dumb to read and understand instructions. While others spend their gold buying useful equipment and stuff, upgrading their gear here I am too lazy to do dailies to earn gold yet I lose millions the same minute I earned them over hs items. Simply because I enjoy doing my hs most of the time. I do want to catch up with the others and be able to do the same things as they do but I prefer to take things slow (I actually waited years for cut scenes on recent generation quests and shakespeare to be slower cause I wanted to immerse myself and actually understand what they are saying but it's still too fast for me). I am amazed on how quickly and efficiently others clear dungeons within minutes so they can spam them while I usually take hours cause of alot of reasons. So far no other game has offered me same amount of freedom and customization like mabinogi

I really wish they'd go back and fix the Shakespeare cutscene issue! It's the one caveat I have to saying 'YOU SHOULD READ THE INTERTITLES-- because those, hardly a human can read them!

I joined mabi a few years back fell in love with the music and transform skills then fell in love with the story chapters you could do or leave be if you dislike to get to the cool ones (looking at you Shakespeare theater content!). I enjoyed the thrill of collecting forms in a globe trotting hunt that lead me to guild up with people to assist me on my journey for the thrill of it. I've come back years later (after finding mabi is the only mmo who freely shares these skills AND supports them without reservation) it's community is buzzing with everyone together with a warm welcoming for a returner like me with open arms even from complete generous strangers more than happy to run a few dungeons and share a bit of gold to get me back to speed right in Dunbarton! Nevermind the rolling events you can take or leave, or that sweet monster capture skill they added (along with proper puppet master skills and even Ritual magic like from dnd!). I'm very happy to be back

The game has been streamlined to a fault, I would say. The player interactivity remains the same, though North America suffers from terrible population issues (server merge when). Gameplay wise though, it's a mess. The windmill meta back then was annoying, but at least in the early game it felt interesting.
The modern Mabinogi feels like a generic dps-focused MMO. Spam AoE skills on groups of enemies until they die, spam Fighter with Perseus Knuckles on bosses until they fall over dead. The game was miles better off when it focused exclusively on reactionary 1v1 combat, where party play was incentivized greatly through each player being able to manage another mob. Multi-aggro in the old days could absolutely destroy you, but nowadays you can just Divine Link and throw Chain Sweeps out like you don't give a rats ass.
Nexon's monetization scheme is EVIL. A vast majority of endgame, or near-endgame enchants and equipment come from gachapons. Anything endgame that can be grinded is...grindy. Grinding in GTA is a cakewalk compared to the amount of time you have to spend in Mabinogi. It's amazing how much faster the game becomes when you swipe your credit card for some reforges and sell them on the auction house for gold. Progression used to be gated by AP, which was very slow to gain. Nowadays, people have more AP than they can possibly spend. Ranking skills is a joke with how many multiplier boosts you can get. Progression is entirely dictated by gear. Grinding, grinding, grinding gear. It's not even consistent progress. Erg, enchanting, stardust, special upgrading, random stat rolls for Magic Craft and Hillwen Engineering weapons, abysmally low drop rates for materials. Late-game gear progression is a complete lottery with no sense of consistent or steady progress. It SUCKS.
This gear-oriented progression has denied the option for Nexon to nerf skills that are OP. Doing so would GREATLY anger players who spent their time investing into relevant gear, which would trigger some people to leave, meaning decreased profits. They opt instead to just buff everything else, it's an endless cycle of buff, buff. New content is released that is "balanced" around buffed skills (usually by arbitrarily restricting them or just throwing lots of numbers at the player). Old content becomes a gag and poses no challenge. There's no worry about "can we do this". People instead ask, "how fast can we do this".
Honestly, it would be nice to see a WoW Classic style treatment for Mabinogi. It's a shame that there's no point though, since the NA playerbase is miles smaller than it used to be. Overall, game ain't what it used to be.

I think Mabi is one of, if not THE best casual friendly mmo. It has a great story, that you're never obligated to do. You can train combat skills, and life skills, at your own pace. You can level up, training what YOU choose to, even those aforementioned Life skills. Everything is open, nothing is locked behind story content (atleast a majority of it, some things might be) and there are very few instances of level gating. The community (whats left of it) is great. The world is fairly open, with instanced sections. In terms of openness, and how free you actually are, I'd say its better than FFXIV in that regard. Whereas in FFXIV they'll tell you the story isnt mandatory... But then lock most of the content behind the main story. Mabi doesnt do that. You can play the whole game without ever touching the story and thats okay. (except the tutorial quests, you have to do those.) Sadly there is the whole Nexon publishing business thats all but driven Mabi into the ground. The main hook into Mabi for me was that very early on, Mabinogi was a game that did anime crossovers on a rather frequent basis. Which was amazing, while they lasted. They havent done one of those for years, now. They used to have cool events monthly, those have been relegated to monthly repeats of boring, reused and repetitive content. The Auction House, while a nice QOL addition, made Belvast, and the Housing market system absolutely useless, so while Mabi does have 3 continents, one of them, that used to be a major trade hub for some of the best items, is lifeless, now. Its empty, it has no purpose. The more Nexon 'fixes' in game bugs, the more bugs they introduce. They're trying to keep this game afloat, and while i hope it stays afloat, its doomed to fail if Nexon continues to run it.

My experience with Mabinogi is helping someone move and finding $1600 worth of Nexxon cards. Casual gaming, indeed ;)

I started playing Mabinogi in 2010 way back right before the elves and Giants and the second continent came out, it seems like for a long time the game would forever stay the same. Boy were we wrong! Over the years since then I have come back to the game over and over again, fell in love with it, ran away from it bittered. But all-in-all I keep coming back! What really stands out to me the most is the entire aspect of choice, what do you do? How will you live your fantasy life? I tried to do it all but I don't think I've even scratched the surface in all honesty. I've ran guilds I've helped construct housing Channel castles I was there for seal stones to be broken but the game still is and will always have a mystical feel to me for being the first MMORPG I played in my life and I believe the thing I miss the most is the rafting. Lmao its time to grab your thunder wand and lets get a party together! So many memories both good and bad, its hard to classify this game but its still a Gem.

Does anyone know what happened to Mabinogi mobile by devcat?

    • @TheMabiNerd
      @TheMabiNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Its my understanding that there were two different mabinogi mobile games being made, one dropped the Mabinogi license and became a different game entirely and the other last I heard is in some sort of production limbo.

My experience... Honestly, I could probably write a while book on this; really, I had a gosh-darn lengthy tangent about it, but apparently it didn't post and I figured it's probably best that I spare you the little details and just focus on the few memories that really stick out to me.
For the first few years (I started back in g7), my experience could be best summed up as "humility" and "wonder". Humility, by the fact that I didn't enter this world with the promise that I'd be some big hero (Among pretty much every other so called "hero", as other MMO's would try to entitle their players), but as practically a "nobody" with much to learn and explore, which only made the world feel more wondrous and mystical.
During those first few years, I had dedicated myself to healing. I wasn't making a lot of gold for a while and struggled to afford equipment that was half-decent; it didn't help that I was spending most of what little I had on feathers and bandages. But in end, none of that really mattered to me. What mattered most to me was that I was still there to help those who needed it, and more importantly were the friends I'd make along the way. And you know what? I felt "heroic" in a way no other MMO has ever made me feel; even when I was just healing others, it always felt great seeing my party persevere through a daunting chamber.
Most importantly however, was that Mabinogi helped me practice my social skills. After my experiences with the people I've met and played with in Mabi, I was able to face social situations with a bit more confidence in real life.

hey great video :D I can't say much about wether the game appeals to casual players as a whole but I can give my 2 cents.
I played mabi back when it was still fairly new and I was still new to the world of MMOs, especially 3d MMOs, my only experience prior was Maple story and that's only 2d, I loved the feel of the game and really enjoyed my time with it back then even if I was so dumb I though Tir and Dunbarton were the only 2 cities in the game (and it took me an embarising amount of time to even discover Dunbarton (I spent alot of time in Tir XD) but what I want to kind of say is I miss when the game was casual for me. after my initial time playing it took me a few years to go back, primarily because I thought I'd already seen everything (boy was I wrong) and since I've learnt about other systems and ways to play the game, while I still have fun, I miss the time when I would farm wheat for 3 days and not be concerned about AP or my cooking talents level.
basically what I'm trying to say is I miss being a casual player and not working about being efficient (or when the next good gacha will come around or when special pets go on sale >.> (I've been chasing that damn alpaca for 5 years now and always just miss it)
i still very much enjoy the game, community, and my cringy memories though and won't ever want to forget them :)
(don't remember the point I was trying to make anymore XD anyways you've got a new subscriber now :3)
