Source Of River Thames

  • Exploring the source of the River Thames near Kemble in Gloucestershire. From such humble beginnings it's hard to believe this is the same famous river that is known all over the world.
In this video I discuss the ongoing debate that Trewsbury Mead might not actually be the true source of the Thames, that Seven Springs near Cheltenham has very credible reason to be instead.

Thank you for your video Tim! I grew up in Thames Head Cottage, 1/4 mile or 2 fields away, East of the source. You might like to know that there was a very impressive stone statue of 'Old Father Thames' at Trewsbury Mead. The statue was moved in 74 and is now at St Johns Lock at Lechlade beside the canal lock. I remember 'he' had a very reclined pose, Italian scuptor, and the design is reminiscent of a Greek mythological figure. He was quite scary for a little lad but now in my 53rd year I've got to say, I look a bit like him!

Thanks for your kind words Rob. Yes I had heard about that statue, I believe it was moved from Trewsbury as it kept getting vandalised.

@@timtube1663 Yes Tim, that was a shame indeed. I have to say that the shovel is a tad insufficient as back in the day I as a young boy remember a postcard pic, no shovel but a ewer, the base in his right hand led along his thigh, to symbolise the creation of the flow.
The sculptor based his art on earlier river god pieces. Some are in the V&A and British Museum, by Romano/Greek artists from way back.
My sister was very adept at clay sculpting and she made a replica of him about 20 years ago.
I honestly cannot help thinking that 'he' looks out of place with a modern building right behind!
Mayhaps, I will get him back there somehow, in my dreams!
The water table in the oolite rock feeds the water from the Welsh mountains and flows beneath the Severn to get to the Cotswolds, so it really makes the 'real' source debate a tad superficial!
The actual source creates a sizeable pool in the field nearer the Tetbury - Roman - Rd, when it is misty and the gurgling of the spring can be heard it is more mystical than anywhere Ive been.
Once upon a time - pre-arphaxadian - when sea levels were much, much lower, the Thames was a tributary river to the Rhine!

Yes you can see where it was 'ripped apart' in the Dutch lowlands.
Interesting about the source coming across from the Welsh mountains, it's amazing what happens underground. The pumps that stop the Severn Railway Tunnel from flooding are actually stopping an underground river from flooding in, not the Severn itself. That underground river *apparently* surfaces somewhere towards the south of France! Not sure how true that is.

@@timtube1663 Just a thought, if you are into interesting BIg, and I mean BIG, geology put into nutshells by an expert, Joe Rogan has youtube shows with Randall Carlson, highlights might suit if a few hours seem excessive! He has such a vast knowledge, and recent discoveries that'll make your jaw drop!
Take care Tim. If you like, Im up for more Geo/History/Myth chat, one of my hobbies! Plus funnily enough he looks just like Old Father Thames! Tibernius?

Some years ago, I was told the source was at Seven Springs. Near the pub.

    John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
    Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

The source of river Thames is controversial and how come a dry area could be it's source.

5.03 "official source of the River Thames" six times now but no attempt to explain what is official about it. - goodbye

    • @timtube1663
      @timtube1663  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Which raises the point is it really the true source? The only thing 'official' about it is the fact someone's labelled it as such as mentioned during the video. Kind of my point really! Thanks for watching though! Watch my River Churn video, there is some info in there about a parliament debate in 1937 with regards to the true Thames source.
