  • I have broken down a 40 series landcruiser instrument cluster as there is a bit of rust starting to form on the faces, and the paint work has some wear and damage.
I am by no means an expert, as I am learning as I go and sharing what I have learnt along the way, I am making these videos just as much for my own reference as well as for anyone willing to watch.

Thanks for another great video. I have been wanting to do this, and now I have a video showing me what to do. Fantastic!

Regarding the blue high beam lens you broke in the video… I own an injection moulding company and have the ways & means to make a replacement lens. We have made a number of blue & red tinted polycarbonate lens for various industrial customers over the years and will easily be able to put a small lens into an existing mould to put a new cavity into to reduce tooling cost. We will also have blue tint and polycarbonate on the shelf. My question is are many people after replacements? Lots of people want to use these old trucks as daily drivers and I know I’ve been told the lamp is too dim by the local authorities- probably because the old lens is degraded. Is it worth the hassle?

Hi Jayson, another great upload. What did you use on the needles?

Rebuild kit comes with all new needles, the rest of the components where cleaned with Carby cleaner.

the cluster is my first attempt at this work.
do you have a video showing how you repainted the cluster face panel?
mine had a considerable amount of rust and i can see marks after i wheel brushed the paint (it was just a bad paint over).

Hi David, I stripped all the paint then gave a lite sand with 400 then primer, followed by high build primer then rubbed with 600 before putting final colour and clear coat over the top.

Thank you very much for the response.
      I picked up a ‘71 Fj40 about a year ago.
The previous owner let it sit in a barn and rot for several years. I’m in deep south Texas, near the coast, and salt air is a big problem.
He also had used a cheap rinoline-type spray on the tub and it’s rusting under neath.
Your videos have given me the confidence to try and do as much of the resto work myself.
I’m way over my head, but it’s been fun.
Thanks again for your response and, especially, your video.
