Fun story. I bought the complete black widows set last year when Melbourne was in a restricted to 5km lockdown. My local art shop, called The Art Shop, personally delivered my pencils the same day. Then I found I had two pencils with breakage issues but knew from Colour With Claire to contact Albert for replacements,. Next day a surprise knock on my door revealed Albert himself delivering my pencils because he was in my 5km zone and it was quicker than postage. Awesome service, with a smile. BTW in Australia The Art Shop sells black widow pencils open stock.
I have the full set of Black Widows as well & I really love that you don't end up with repeat colours as you do with some sets. I must say I love the Monarch set the most, the colours really complement each other. I love the look of the letters book & feel a little pressie to myself coming on!
I've got all of them but this is the set I haven't tried yet. Those two colors are really pretty together. Nice book. Make a birthday gift quickly then frame it 😉💜🌿
I do love my Black Widows, I've got the lot and together it's a really beautiful colour palette across all 144 pencils. Not got this book so can't comment on that but I've found sometimes I have to put a layer of Copic Ciao marker down before i use the Black Widows in some colouring books. Johanna Basford says she doesn't feel her images are finished until other people colour them in, which I think is a lovely way to consider artwork. And yes, you're absolutely an artist!
I have this set (6) and haven't really used the Monarch that much. Now I'm stimulated to pull out the tin an get started. I can't wait to see the complete M.
I believe that you young lady are an ARTIST! You may not earn your living with your art, but there is no doubt in my mind that you are one of us! I do not plan on purchasing these pencils as I have more than enough with what I have already and I have colored in the past with all types of mediums. I even worked as a colorist for a comic! So there is a "job" for those who enjoy coloring plain line work too! These days it is done on the computer I was on the cusp of this happening to this job of coloring pages of line-work for comics and other children's books too. I do look forward to seeing you finish this page and what your thoughts are about finishing with these pencils.
Cross Stitching: My Dad took it up briefly and after he died Mum took over the stuff and - oh my oh my. To be honest the family joke was if you stood still long enough you’d be cross stitched. :) From little pieces out of crossstitch magazines she ended up doing beautiful works of art - that’s what they were. For my birthday one year she stitched me a gardener’s scene of pots and flowers (17” x 6.5” unframed) and it proudly hangs on my bedroom wall. After she had to go in a care home and subsequently died I took 5 of my favourite pieces with me to my new home (we had shared a house) and I felt bad not to be able to take them all, but every wall was adorned and I moved to a small flat. She got immense pleasure out of it. When she went to a National Trust property she would buy a kit of the place if she had one and it was a memory of the visit. If Mama Gem gets a tiny proportion of the pleasure my Mum did she’ll be well served. This was Mum’s artistic outlet.
Love your channel. I have a few issues with these pencils. As a budget pencil they are expensive and make you buy many sets to get a complete range of colors. I will never waste my money on these. I did buy one budget set being Arteza and would not again. Prismacolor for me and will deal with a off core once and a while. Tfs
I just got these in a sale, I'm liking them so far except the pinks. I just saw a youtuber reviewing the new dragon set. I also don't like calling myself an artist, a few years back I showed a group of folk a photo of an art doll that I had sculpted. One woman skittily commented " your not an artist, your no Van Gogh". I replied that I am a hobbyist.
If I keep watching you trying out more art supplies that look really amazing, I'm going to need to a whole house just dedicated to all the stuff I would love to have myself, lol. Joke aside, they do look really good :)
Hello Gem, and Color Cave Community. I thought I leave this bit of information here for you: Sapphires actually do come in a green variety. They can also be yellow, purple, or orange. There are even pink ones that are considered sapphires and not rubies (though most red gemstones in this category are rubies, not sapphires). I very much agree though that it's pretty confusing to use the name "sapphire" for a green pencil considering that the majority of them are a gorgeous (sapphire :)) blue. Love your artwork, Gem, and your videos in general.
I found this on the web Pinkish red, medium to dark red varieties are called ruby. All other colors are called sapphire, including colorless, white, gray, blue, blue-green, green, violet, purple, orange, yellow, yellow-green, brown, golden amber, peachy pink, pink, and black
@@colorcrazy2944 that's true, though there are rare cases in which pink varieties count as sapphires (I think it's companies that decide on that for some strange reason. maybe/probably money reasons). it's not a common thing of course.. just some random "fun fact" :)
@@Thia-saurus I have been interested in Sapphires since I was a kid (so many decades ago...) & loved Star Sapphires. I think officially (geologists maybe?) pink is sapphire. I am guessing the rest is marketing, i.e. when someone thinks it will sell for more if it's ruby. I agree gems are full of random fun facts.
I own these and love them, the colour names are quite fun and funky. Lol the fudge your so right doesn’t look anything like fudge at all, how ever at church fairs and school fairs they do sell lollies that are home made and there is one that is this colour and is called home fudge um it’s quite coconut’y and well quite frankly yuck! How ever others buy it and love it and they do ask for it so maybe this colour is from this fudge (live in NZ and usually Aussie follows us in things the great Pavlova debate so I image they have this fudge to …let’s call it Aussie Fudge) so this would be the right colour truly Gem the fudge is disgusting so don’t recommend that you try and cook some up. My very favourite colour is milk, mango or cream mango, yep love mixing in these, use it a lot on flowers just think it looks strange sometimes I will use the lavender as like an outline then use the cream so pretty. Have. A great week with your mum, ah cross stitching I used to do this when my girls were baby’s as you can pick up and put down, quite relaxing. Fabric got hard to get here then people were cross stitching with beads I tried this and it looked great but boy time consuming. Sounds like your mum has the wrong needle 🪡 a dull point is better for cross stitch, hang on you said she was embroidering yep sharp needle for this, um maybe grab her a few thimbles to protect her fingers you can buy rubber ones now these are quite good. Happy colouring will watch your next instalment of Monarch the pencils.
Hey Gem, loved your video! I have the A to Z book too and found I couldn't use pencils very successfully on the paper unless I had a first layer of something down beforehand. So instead I've been working with pen/ fineliners as a base layer when using the book. I love how well you did though. I think I just started to lose my patience and was scared I'd ruin the paper and picture. 😤😍
This made me laugh a little. I think a firmer pencil with light layers or one heavy 'smooshy' layer of perhaps Prismacolors would be the way to go with these images. It can be done, just a little perseverance required!
@thecolourcave do you sharpen new pencils before you use them, most artists grade have a coating to protect in transit, I have noticed a difference in the lay down personally. Be interested to hear your thoughts on this x
I do - I call it 'taking the tip off' - I have noticed it with pencils in the past, and that first sharpen (even just one or two turns) certainly makes a difference. The BWs need it anyway, as they arrive with a flat top.
Cross stitch kit = tends to be where you get everything in a pack (tread, fabric, pattern) Counted patterns = where you have a pattern on paper which you use to make the pattern on the fabric Non-counted patterns = tends to patterns that have been printed onto the fabric (think 5d diamond painting) I like the colours you were beginning to use...as well as the book.
I have not looked very much at this range of pencils, the black wood sounds nice but I saw a comment somewhere that it can leave marks on the paper and I am not interested in creep crawlies. I really like this review, you made some colors sound very interesting but also showed that there are enough strange names that I think I can leave these off of my wish list. The book is very interesting too. I like that the letters have more than 1 version. I am glad you and your mom can be together especially now. I hope she does not stab herself very often. If she does maybe she can get a blunter needle? It's been a long time so I don't really remember any options but I used to prefer one with a large eye, I don't know what it was meant to be used for though.

I love that you swatched and reviewed by actually coloring on a page with the pencils. Best way to review in my opinion. Thanks so much!
You are so welcome!
I got all the sets I like them love the artwork I enjoyed watching
Just got that coloring book for my granddaughter

Love that book! I am so glad that Mama Gem has taken up a hobby and is puttering around. Your usually stories perk up considerably when she is around!
I've got all of them but this is the set I haven't tried yet. Those two colors are really pretty together. Nice book. Make a birthday gift quickly then frame it 😉💜🌿

It really is!

I love the colour combination you have used. Also it would be great to see mammy Gems embroidery and cross stitch when they are done!
I shall consult with her, though I think the cross-stitch might be a 2022 finisher 😂

Sapphire & Ruby are corundum. Red corundum is called Ruby, all other colors are called Sapphire. It is strange/confusing that it is named that way.

It's a shame that the pencils aren't made with FSC wood though..
