I can't even imagine a woman seeing your apartment for the first time.
"How do I turn on the lights?"
"Well, all you have to do is stand here, raise your hand for 5 seconds, and a linear actuator will come out of the wall. Take note on the EL wire around the borders. Their are 17 easy to use compartments containing switches, which open hidden drawers. Once the drawers are open, you'll notice it can get quite dark, note the "natural" light illuminating the area I made from a broken laptop screen. Once you've made your way into the hidden drawers, simply connect your cell phone via this easy to use USB type c dongle. Once connected, connect to the wifi and download the app, "light-switch". And, that's all. P.S. Take note on the carbon fiber wrapped mdf board holstering the USB dongle".

Matt I just have to say that I love your personality and passion for these projects! I don't love your work because of the things you make, but because of the message you deliver with them. It shows that we don't have to purchase a lot of equipment or material and that we don't have to be afraid of experimenting with salvaged or "broken" technology. I mean we have to be cautious of electricity etc. of course :D, but that shouldn't hinder us to use our imagination. Please keep on going and inspire people, thanks!

If you are going to use a power bank and you don't provide more support than a kick stand (or relocate the bulk of the weight to the base of the notebook) you will still damage your hinges. The amount of added pressure and torque from attaching this to the back of the screen will far exceed their design.
Doesn't matter for his hinges, they are already blown. But while the kick stand will help with the added rotation load on your main hinges, it will not support the weight pushing down. Adapt a stand that will support the added weight (or move it underneath the base of your notebook), and you'll be fine.

    Neat.
The hinge design folding backwards seems interesting as a presentation option.
I'd be a bit concerned about damaging the screen while transporting it though, as it's exposed constantly to the outside.
I would consider the merits of a pop-up/slider design as an alternative to the hinge design. You don't get the neat presentation mode, but I suspect it would be sturdier. Additionally, the top and bottom screen angles would always match... for better or worse.

Well done sir! I've been thinking about doing this exact thing for a long time, for the same reasons. It should absolutely be a thing. Asus' "Zenbook Duo" thing is no good because it requires looking down even further to see the secondary screen.
I think it's worth mentioning that you can buy a "portable monitor", which is basically a laptop screen + controller board. This would be a good starting point to building a monitor that sits on top of your laptop screen (you could strip it down to just the display and controller board, and go from there)

And this is a concept, you can re-inforce to protect it during travel and have a different set-up (separate to set-up on the side of the laptop rather than on the top, you miss on the ergonomics but it is a simpler option and still gives great options)

    • @sadev101
      @sadev101 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

first off i love the idea.. but there is going to be a "but" oersonally i find the weight on the screen too much and a kickstand not the best idea.. therefore i propose the next version you put the video adapterboard and the battery under the laptop.. battery left on near the back , board on right near the back.. so in middle the laptop fan stil works. and the laptop now put at an agle.. front down back raised.
this mean you can make a really short cable to the vga or dvi output port.. and also it raises the laptop at an angle making typing nicer and raising the originaql screen also a bit for better viewing position. now adding the secondary screen will be lighter as the videoboard and battery are not added to it but underneath the laptop.
this way you can use a hinge that will fold it flat on the back .. this way when you store it in a bag because the screen is flat against the original screen wi woundd bend if you press on the sides when dropping the bag... can you picture it? its improvement on all fronts

Would be cool to add four things: 1. Use an old laptop screen and retain its bezel / casing. 2. Have the screen slide up instead of fold out. This way it would have a smooth back and a professional look. 3. Hide the controller inside the laptop by removing an unused optical drive to make space for it. 4. Power it from the laptop battery.

I did this. It worked great for about two days until the screen got bumped. Then it got screen cancer and died miserably.
I recommend upcycling the old bezel so as not to permanently weaken the panel.
If I ever do it again, I'll do that.

So, I can just glance up at the reference instead of to one side. Since the keyboard/trackpad is covered, I use a wireless keyboard/trackpad on the desk in front of the pen display.

I am in the process of making one of these screens. Just received the controller board. I have discovered that a PSU from an old Virgin Media router powers the screen fine. The PSU is very compact - the sort where the transformer is built into the plug housing. It only takes up a bit of space and will save me wiring up a USB-C power board and using a power bank.

In my original build of this DIY project, I opted not to use a power bank and just plugged the board directly into the wall socket. Now I am redesigning/ upgrading the dual screen project and I've decided to try the power bank. I've run into a few snags. The ZY12PDN poll detector easily let me get 12v out of my 18w, 10400mah charmast power bank... however, the poll detector would not let me save the voltage. So I switched to using a fixed voltage power trigger from MELIFE that is based on the IP2721 chip. It works great and I always get the necessary 12v to power the graphics board. So I tested the chip with the LCD monitor hooked up. That's when I realized there was another problem. The LCD monitor would power on for half a second every three seconds or so but it clearly wasn't getting enough power from the power bank. Apparently, 18w is nowhere near enough to sustainably power the setup. So now I need to return one power bank and get another that can supply 45+ watts. 60 watts is preferable. Anyway, I will update this once I swap out the power bank.
EDIT: I tested a power bank capable of 36 W at 12V through USB C PD. The issue with the screen powering on and back off continued.

    Improvement ideas:
    1 Thinner power solution:
1.1 Connect in parallel phone batteries
1.2 Connect them to a USB power module
1.3 3D-print them a housing and place them all in a housing
    2. Thinner, smaller and stronger hinges:
3D-print a hinge with a smaller circular axis, and longer arms. Benefits:
    • They can be thinner,
    • They can support the weight of the plate over a bigger surface area (for better weight pressure distribution)
    • If casting them from some metal: use liquid metal to connect them to the big aluminium plate (for heat transfer - combine with connecting the screen to the plate, too)
    3. Use a cog-wheel/spring-based hinges
    Advantages:
    • They can support more weight (for heavier screens and extra and for being on the go - to survive quick movements that push the screen back)
    • They could be adjusted to be toggleably-locked, for more viewing angles, and keeping the angle you want (like in folable phones nowadays)
    4. Combine 3 additional screens in total:
Take advantage of the other 3 sides of the laptop's screen, and add 2 additional screens, for a total of 3 additional monitors
    5. Even more screens (more difficult to execute, need to be stackable):
Find a way to stack more screens such that they're foldable and lock them all in place, to a rectangle shape, for a total bigger screen size (like it's done for TVs) - might need extra hardware

This is a very fun project to see, but to be honest, it's a bit easier to just plug in a standard PC monitor that could stick above the laptop screen and have it just plugged in whenever needed.
If you're on the go, I don't get the point of bringing this spare screen.
However, the way it's attached on the back of the laptop screen was very surprising to me.
All with all, fun video to watch!

    • @andyjackson3663

Cant see that it wouldn't - your limitation is actually the number of display ports on the machine / laptop itself. If you have the ability to connect 4 screens (regardless of what those screens actually are) then it will work just fine and windows will detect each of them.

I have an old 24 inch LCD monitor. I plug it into my laptop to watch videos. I might build a stand so the monitor sits at the right height. Then I can unplug everything from the laptop to take it with me. Without having those boxes attached to it.
To keep me from getting that neck pain I just sit it on top of a small box. I use Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I do the same for my tablet. I sit an adjustable plastic stand on top of a 14" square cardboard box. The box is stuffed with cut up cardboard and paper packaging and is solid. It brings either one up to eye level.

I would like to add that in-place of a battery backup you can also plug your laptop into a USB-C, Thunderbolt, or other kind of dock (attached in the same place the battery is positioned in this video), and then output the USB-C from that dock to the 2nd monitor, plus get additional connectivity from the dock itself, such as more ports, etc. For docks and laptops that support it, this dock can also be used as a way to charge the laptop with a USB-C power input to it (again, depending on if the dock and laptop supports it), keeping clutter down.
