This was fascinating. I watched Citizen Kane years ago and found it pretty underwhelming so it's nice to finally understand why it's considered such a great film. Also the editing tricks like the crowd shots are really cool, I had no idea, even watching it back it's hard to tell that it's not a crowd.
"I appreciate these extra little facts Karl, but dinosaurs please." Thank you Brad, for saying my exact thoughts. Also, ankylosaur because you know it had to smash some dino shins with its mace tail.
Quetzalcoatlus. It's the largest flying creature ever. It could fit you easily just within its beak. They're so big that they needed to use their wings like skis to poke vault themselves into the air and their wings were so large that they speculate that they could soar across the entire ocean in one go.
They were close to the same size as the mountain banshees in Avatar (quetzalcoatlus averaged 10-11 meter wingspan,vs the banshee's 14 meter average) except their heads are WAY more massive and their necks longer.
Not a dinosaur, but still an extremely baller ass animal and is pretty much the closest to an actual honest to god dragon to actually grace the surface of this planet.
@@HenrythePaleoGuy This is why nobody asks what your favorite dino as an adult, people are too caught up on specifics. Its like when I say blacks my favorite color and someone has to step on me and say "that's not a color, its a shade"
I got a whole list of favorite dinosaurs, for some examples: -Acrocanthosaurus ~ big carnivore from another branch of the family tree, got a sick hump going down the whole body -Therizinosaurus ~ one of the biggest weirdos. Long neck, meter-long claws, beer-gut belly, all while running that vegan diet -Quetzalcoatlus ~ not a dinosaur, but one of (if not) the largest animals to ever fly, on top of also being a weirdo
I remember how disappointed I was when I first watched Citizen Kane and it took me a while to understand it in a historical perspective. It is difficult to appreciate groundbreaking movies or books long after the fact because many of the elements that made them distinctive have become commonly used afterwards.
I'm wrong about a lot, but at least I can pick a favorite dinosaur! Ankylosaurs just chilling, not doing nobody harm but carries plenty of find out for anyone who wants to fuck around.
Mine is "edgy" triceratops. The thing is, its my favorite since I was a child before the first Jurassic Park. At the time I had a collection of magazines about dinosaurs and for what I read, for my brain the triceratops was "the good guy who could take on the evil tyranosaurus" and thats it. When I grow older I learned a little bit about other dinosaurs of course, and a lot of them was "oh coool, this one is awesome", but child me was, "meh, triceratops could take it" even if that wasn't technically true. Could never convince him otherwise so still there on top
My favorite Dino isn't actually a Dino, it's just a prehistoric creature. Smilodon Brutalis, which is literally Latin for Brutal Knives. It's the Saber-Toothed Tiger.
No joke - Ankylosaurus is my favourite as well! The "less popular" is part of it, but also just how bulky and that massive tail weapon - may not be starting as many fights as an herbivore, but you know it's ending a bunch of fights!
You brought up the Goon and the cardboard cutouts in the crowd. Those scenes were filmed in my hometown, I played in that arena and I found it weird that some of the cardboard cutouts were left in the stands after they finished filming. It felt weird during team practices to see them there. Then when I watched the movie in the theaters, I pointed to the people I went with and they did not notice them at all. My uncle did get a photo with Jay Baruchel during that experience.
Honestly, as someone who saw the movie less than two years ago for the first time, I found Citizen Kane to be very good, even if you're only briefly considering its age. Yes, I could definitely see some of the cracks of that age, some of the old tricks (which, again, compiled in a way that was essentially new by Welles and his crew in this very movie) don't hold up as well under modern view, but I still found it to be a story that was fairly fascinating and compelling, especially as so many different scenes can be broken down to such a fine level of detail while still drawing more out of it, and it uses a bunch of narrative elements that still work solidly. Would I say best ever? Well, all things considered... Maybe? I'm not the kind to pick a definitive number one of anything, so I'd definitely put it high up, but I doubt I could ever decide on best of all time, Kane or otherwise. I'm sure someone's put it all together better since, but I wouldn't know where to start in making that choice. Also, triceratops is still cool and I refuse to hear otherwise.
T. rex actually only gets _cooler_ the more we learn. It had the strongest bite force of any land animal ever. We also have fossil evidence of it basically curb-stomping a rex it'd already killed.
Ankylosaur for me because I had a rubber/eraser in the shape of one as a child, and it was the most symmetrical of all the dinosaur rubbers/erasers. The "feet" weren't quite symmetrical though
My favourite dinosaur is also the Ankylosaurs as I remember watching Ice Age 3 as a kid and seeing it for the first time and thinking, "Its covered in armour and its got a wrecking ball for a tail!" and ever since then its been my favourite.
"It's the first movie that was filmed like a movie" would have saved me so so so so so so much time researching why it was important, and even when I kind of figured it out, I couldn't articulate it, thank you.
20:55 Karl becomes the most British I have ever heard him. The accent got thick lol. Love the video :) Orson Welles is one of my favorite subjects for you guys to talk about.
As a kid my favorite Dino was Apatosaurus, cause the fight scene of Littlefoot’s mother against “sharp tooth” in The Land Before Time. Then Jurassic Park was released and I jumped on the Velociraptor train.
what i love about kane is that it's never told from his perspective.. you see multiple versions and interpretations of his life, from the news on the march film reel to all his friends/parents/exwife/work associates testimony on who he was.. ultimately you have to decide what kind of man he was.. how much of what was said was true/exaggerated..
Growing up my favorite was the brontosaurus I am also a fan of the fact that a scientist realized that the tail thing on the stegosaurus needed a name and just took it from a Far Side comic, and that is why they have a thagomizer
Ankylosaurs has always been my favorite dinosaur it is a walking tank with a club for a tail, then i started play Ark Survival Evolved and found out that the Anky was effectively the best swimmer in all of history and functioned like a prehistoric wave runner of doom.
Not technically a dinosaur, but is always included in books and junk toys. Dimetrodon! it has a sail on it's back but it's not a trex clone like Spinosaurus.
Deinonychus. When i was a kid i thought it was pronounced Dino-nichus and thought "well this is the best dino because it has dino right there in its name." I still pronounce it that way even knowing it is wrong, no i will not correct myself
Honestly, I find Cinderella to be the most relaxed and relatable Disney classic. Is a lightly magical slice of life about a girl with a horrible family, doing her damn best not to let them take the last of her joy. She just wants an honest night off to hang out with others people of her age and might be nicer to her than her family. She isn't there to meet the prince. He likes her and thinks she's chill when they meet, but he falls in love because she isn't fawning over him and his title, when she leaves she even used the excuse she hadn't MET the prince yet. That's when he really realized she wasn't a title chaser or putting on an act to impress someone important, that's really just what she's like in a relaxed environment enjoying herself. She didn't even realize she had been with the prince until her family says something about the shoe she lost. That's when she realized that not only does that cool dude she met at the party really like her, but also, holy shit, he might be the ticket out of her abusive family situation.
My favorite dinosaur is probably either Therizinosaurus or Deinocheirus, because they're both giant weirdos. But my favorite dinosaur name is Irritator. It's related to Spinosaurus. Fossil poachers found the skull, and essentially glued junk to it to make it look more impressive to try and get more money for it. Trying to get all the junk off to be able to examine it properly created so much extra work, they named it for their irritation
Therizinosaurus. The idea that T rex has a plant eating cousin with claws large enough to kill anything in it's way with a borzoi face is just amazing. All hail the Death Goose.
just love how throughout the video Brad is going "that's neat but di-no-saurs" trying to get kyle to the point(honestly I probably would have forgotten a few times that dinosaurs where the actual topic of the video because kyle drew me in so much)
My favorite dinosaur while technically not a dinosaur is Quetzalcoatlus Northropi. They are essentially living planes that could fly between continents without stopping.
troodon is my favorite dinosaurs because it is believed they were rather intelligent. also they preyed mostly on small creatures so if they were to be brought into the modern world they wouldn't immediately be a physical threat to us
Spinosaurus, before Jurassic Park 3. I thought it was so cool until that movie came out then everyone was mad that it killed the T-Rex, so I had to hide my love of it since.
Spinosaurus is my favourite because every time you turn around a new paper has been published which radically changes our idea of what it looked like. Currently it is believed to occupy a similar evolutionary niche similar to that of the modern Nile crocodile.
On the subject of Orson Welles getting around studio meddling; during the filming of A Touch of Evil more than a decade later, studio rep dropped by set and were horrified to discover by the end of the first day of shooting on a complicated scene scheduled to take multiple days to shoot that not a single foot of film had been shot. The next day angry executives came down to the set to discover the crew packing up by noon, having completed said scene several days early. The result? The most famous single take tracking shot in film history.
Every time someone asks me what my favorite dinosaur is, the first four or five things I think of aren't technically dinosaurs. 😂 I finally came to the conclusion that, apparently, I don't like dinosaurs. Lol.
I'm going to go down for this, but Avatar, the first one was visually stunning but holy crap is the story just schlock. I mean, the substance that the earthlings are trying to get is literally called unobtainium. Seriously

It's an issue with a lot of topics now that many things are so in-depth and take so long to learn that there is a disconnect between those in the know and those that aren't. This has a major impact when discussing things that seem simple to the person in the know because they have dealt with it for so long. e.g I want to study insects and I know that bugs and insects don't mean the same thing a bug is a type of insect, but I know most people don't know or don't care so I don't mention it. Another large one that works similarly is different dialects of the same language. For example, most places use either British English or American English as bass. You have separate traits piled on top of it like influences from other languages, pronunciation, and the like which can result in two people on the same continent speaking phonetically the same language and can hardly talk to each other. This is when it's at its strongest where typically it's only a few words and phrases that aren't understood. Sorry for my spelling and the wall of text, I like this stuff.
reminds me of when I hear my Bavarian friend talk to his sister. He speaks textbook German with me no issue, and there is just some switch that gets flipped and I can't understand jack lmao
My favourite dino is the pterodactyl because 1. It starts with a silent P 2. They can fly 3. You could probably ride one 4. See number 3 but add who doesn’t want to ride a dino 5. They have cool heads

Anky has always been my favorite as well. Walking tank with a giant club tail that doesn't give a fuck and just wants to munch on veggies all day is my type of dino.
aachenosaurus is a great one because when it was first discovered the scientists thought they had found pieces of a dinosaurs jaw but it was later found to just be some fossilized wood
VERY technically, even were it a bird, that would still make it a dinosaur, but if it's a pterosaur it is not a dinosaur... Also I like Citizen Kane as a movie.
This is my kinda fact fiend. I know you're trying to do what the people want nowadays. I absolutely love when Karl is just going off on every tangentially related fact he can think of. The person behind the camera starts off polite and appreciative off the facts, but then gets more and more frustrated trying to keep him on topic
Carnotaurus is my fav dino. i saw it in the walking with dinos travling exhibit, it was just the head but it was so striking and i had never heard of it before. every so often i get lucky and there's a small model of them, they are smaller than the t rex but they have really good head horns and look sick.
Well that's why it's one of the best movies in history the guy who wrote it directed it and then had final say on it. If you would let artist do art it turns out better then when you make it for money
My favorite dinosaur is Lexovisaurus. It's a relative of Stegosaurus that has shoulder spikes. I mainly like it due to the Fossil Fighters, which is a game that revolves around reviving fossils and using them in battle. Lexovisaurus can be obtained early on in the game, and it can be used all the way to the end
I love the Parasaurolophus, I'm going to get a little tattoo of one. I fell in love with them when I watched Land Before Time as a child with Ducky. They're also one of the few dinosaurs to actually be in every Jurassic Park movie which is very cool to me.
This was fascinating. I watched Citizen Kane years ago and found it pretty underwhelming so it's nice to finally understand why it's considered such a great film. Also the editing tricks like the crowd shots are really cool, I had no idea, even watching it back it's hard to tell that it's not a crowd.
The pachyrhinosaurus has always been my personal favorite, "let's go Lucas represent!"
"I appreciate these extra little facts Karl, but dinosaurs please."

Not a dinosaur, but they are broadly a member of Archosauria.
I was about to say “my favorite isn’t a dinosaur, but”
The quetzal takes the cake full stop.
Not a dinosaur, but still an extremely baller ass animal and is pretty much the closest to an actual honest to god dragon to actually grace the surface of this planet.

"Silica gel" isn't actually toxic in anyway. It's labeled "do not eat" because the packages are a choking hazard.
I'm wrong about a lot, but at least I can pick a favorite dinosaur! Ankylosaurs just chilling, not doing nobody harm but carries plenty of find out for anyone who wants to fuck around.

My nephew got me to love them. He dressed as one for Halloween once. The massive bludgeoning tail is awesome too.
The Ankylosaurus is the dinosaur equivalent of fuck around and find out.
I wonder if the Ankylosaurus' tail flail counts as a thagomizer, like the spikes on Stegosaurus tails?

Triceratops. And I blame Dinotopia entirely.
I do love when films try to find creative ways to any limitations they have.

Tommy Wiseau: Hold my beer.

20:55 Karl becomes the most British I have ever heard him. The accent got thick lol. Love the video :) Orson Welles is one of my favorite subjects for you guys to talk about.
Allosaurus. It's like a fuel efficient T-Rex.
As a kid my favorite Dino was Apatosaurus, cause the fight scene of Littlefoot’s mother against “sharp tooth” in The Land Before Time. Then Jurassic Park was released and I jumped on the Velociraptor train.
Alligator, one of the only ones still alive.
Favorite dinosaur: Sprinting crocodrile
That one or crab c:
Dimetrodon because I like to think the big fin was just there to annoy others.
My favorite is Styracosaurus. So many awesome spikes along its frill. Ankylosaurs would be a close second.
Allosaurus because it's the most basic dinosaur but it has crests
what i love about kane is that it's never told from his perspective.. you see multiple versions and interpretations of his life, from the news on the march film reel to all his friends/parents/exwife/work associates testimony on who he was.. ultimately you have to decide what kind of man he was.. how much of what was said was true/exaggerated..
The spinosaurus hands down is the coolest one.
My favourite dinosaur is Spinosaurus, I like the frill and it even lived in water
SPINOSAURUS FOR THE WIN...
My favorite dinosaur? Nessie.
I stan for Spinosaurus. It's amazing how the entire theory of this creature gets re-examined based on tiny scraps of evidence.
Sinosauropteryx because it's one of the first dinosaurs we know the color of.
These are really fun to listen to. Like chopped pod casts. About to go back & watch the previous one. Thanks for the goods.
Growing up my favorite was the brontosaurus
I am also a fan of the fact that a scientist realized that the tail thing on the stegosaurus needed a name and just took it from a Far Side comic, and that is why they have a thagomizer
Brontosaurus. The original “mixed up” one.
PACHYCEPHALOSAURUS!!!!! Das my boi!!!
Imagine playing footy with this beast
Dreadnoughtus it's name means fears nothing
Ankylosaurs has always been my favorite dinosaur it is a walking tank with a club for a tail, then i started play Ark Survival Evolved and found out that the Anky was effectively the best swimmer in all of history and functioned like a prehistoric wave runner of doom.
I believe all children are born with the complete knowledge of dinosaurs but lose that knowledge as we grow older.

I loved to find the meaning and did a report on this one cause it meant Terrible Claw! I drew it awful though and made its snout MASSIVE.
Yes! Ankylosaurus all the way, a tank with a mace!
Loving the emo Spider-Man cut that Karl is rocking right now
Allosaurus because it was always the hero to the T-Rex villain.

Stegasaurus is a good boy.
Agree
My favorite dinosaur while technically not a dinosaur is Quetzalcoatlus Northropi. They are essentially living planes that could fly between continents without stopping.

Currently it is believed to occupy a similar evolutionary niche similar to that of the modern Nile crocodile.
My favorite dinosaur is the chicken, because it's delicious

Spinosaurus was always a personal favorite.
Same
Every time someone asks me what my favorite dinosaur is, the first four or five things I think of aren't technically dinosaurs. 😂 I finally came to the conclusion that, apparently, I don't like dinosaurs. Lol.
The ankylosaurus is the confirmed hipster dinosaur
I'm going to go down for this, but Avatar, the first one was visually stunning but holy crap is the story just schlock. I mean, the substance that the earthlings are trying to get is literally called unobtainium. Seriously
This has been a very fun talk, thank you for the video.
I loved Citizen Kane. I love old movies in general, though, and understand the limitations filmmakers used to have. I did recognize that crowd scene was faked...the people didn't move a whisker, and were too identical. The probable reason for my noticing was that I like to look at what else is going on in a shot, besides the main focus...you catch all sorts of funny things that way. Which is why watching John Carter in 3D sucked so hard--most of the screen was out of focus, which gave me a slight headache from my brain trying to force my eyes to focus on the impossibly out of focus.
I loved Stegosaurus as a kid but, then I moved onto Utahraptor.
My favorite dinosaur is the ostrich. My favorite "not-actually-a-dinosaur" is the Pterosaurs.
My favorite Dino is the Scarlet Macaw
It's an issue with a lot of topics now that many things are so in-depth and take so long to learn that there is a disconnect between those in the know and those that aren't. Sorry for my spelling and the wall of text, I like this stuff.
reminds me of when I hear my Bavarian friend talk to his sister. He speaks textbook German with me no issue, and there is just some switch that gets flipped and I can't understand jack lmao
Iguanadon. The thumbs-up cheers me up lol
My favourite dino is the pterodactyl because
1. It starts with a silent P
2. They can fly
3. You could probably ride one
4. See number 3 but add who doesn’t want to ride a dino
5. They have cool heads
My favourite dinosaur is either Ducky or Littlefoot... Ifor 40+½
My favourite dinosaur has to be the quetzalcoatlus, because it's an absolute mind f*ck of a flying unit with a unpronounceable name
Why is no one talking about that sick duck trick Wells did????
Stegosaurus. Cause I had the toy.
Favorite fictional, Dinosaurs the 90s TV show.
I agree with Karl in regards to the favorite dinosaur. I've got a small Ankylosaurus toy I keep tethered to my work bag for break time play time.
Bro that’s my favorite Dino too. Head but machine
Technically pterosaur, but mine is Quetzalcoatlus.
My favour dinosaur is Spinosaurus
Even the people behind Jurassic World knew to put respect on the Ankylosaurus, the Indomitus had to flip it over to win that fight since its defenses were too good otherwise
i love the tangents you guys go on, i forgot about the point of the video 5 minutes in
Only my sons ask me what my favourite dinosaur is anymore. And it's Baryonix btws
Pachycephalosaurus ftw
Anky has always been my favorite as well. Walking tank with a giant club tail that doesn't give a fuck and just wants to munch on veggies all day is my type of dino.
aachenosaurus is a great one because when it was first discovered the scientists thought they had found pieces of a dinosaurs jaw but it was later found to just be some fossilized wood
Pteradactyls are pretty cool
VERY technically, even were it a bird, that would still make it a dinosaur, but if it's a pterosaur it is not a dinosaur... Also I like Citizen Kane as a movie.
Spinosaur is my favorite Dino because it’s basically a giant bi-pedal crocodile with a Mohawk.
This is my kinda fact fiend. I know you're trying to do what the people want nowadays. I absolutely love when Karl is just going off on every tangentially related fact he can think of. The person behind the camera starts off polite and appreciative off the facts, but then gets more and more frustrated trying to keep him on topic
You really gonna call me out for liking the triceratops
I mean you're absolutely right but I still don't like it
Carnotaurus is my fav dino. i saw it in the walking with dinos travling exhibit, it was just the head but it was so striking and i had never heard of it before. every so often i get lucky and there's a small model of them, they are smaller than the t rex but they have really good head horns and look sick.
Velociraptors are likely my favorite... but they used to give me Nightmares... even more than Rex ever did...
that was the longest walk ever, well done.
My favorite was always Pachycephalosaurus!
My favourite dinosaur has always been Deinonychus, but Ankylosaurus was second so I'm glad to see it getting some love
Baryonyx. It's like someone mixed a crocodile and a bear together, then upscaled them abut 2~3 times.
I love the Parasaurolophus, I'm going to get a little tattoo of one. I fell in love with them when I watched Land Before Time as a child with Ducky. They're also one of the few dinosaurs to actually be in every Jurassic Park movie which is very cool to me.
My favorite is the Liopleurodon
