No damage. No bad feelings. Just: "You got me/I got you, Well Played/Thank you." And both men walk off without injury. You love to see it.
That's the way it should be; let's be honest you know if you've been caught, but I've seen people try to fight out of a losing position and end up hurt for nothing.
Just watched several Gordon Ryan matches. He seems to wear his opponents down by using his strong legs and leg/hip dexterity. Let's them used their upper body - while he use his more powerful lower body where he can always "roll" away or out. He maintains his gas tank, burns theirs down, then uses the flaws that develop in the opponent due to fatigue. Pretty brilliant stuff.
Watch his most recent interview on the Joe Rogan Podcast. I think Mo is on at the same time. He talks about why his style of BJJ only gets better with age and why he's not in his prime yet. It touches on the difference of having an athletic form of Jiujitsu vs a constricting and slow form.
Well spotted, there are a few things he does to grind his opponents down. For one, he baits positional changes so they exert energy to escape when he isn't actually changing position, and he "attacks" safe submission sequences that don't require him to change position, so that his opponent is forced to react do defend a faux attack and therefore uses more energy. In this match in particular, he also applied pain via shoulder pressure to psychologically wear his opponent down, as well as restricting his breathing with his chest whilst he had mount. The breathing thing in particular massively tanks your stamina, and forces you into desperate, energy-burning movements to dislodge him. He was definitely playing the long game, and by the time Diniz managed to escape, he had so little energy left that Ryan snatched the heel with relative ease.

Slide of hand/limb, the perception/angle of your opponents vision etc. This would include the "Faux attacks" you speak of. I like presenting vulnerabilities to set traps. That is REALLY high level though - the psychological end. Didn't see that on first viewing at all. Great catch. Adds an interesting dimension. My sister is a Professional MMA Fighter (Tina "The Predator" Pettigrew - check her fights out in the youtube search bar). I've been trying to teach her some of these tools/principles. Which carry over to MMA to great effect. But, she seems almost "too intense" or aggressive to apply them. Maybe it's just a "mat time" thing? Any ideas?
@@zpettigrew Wow, sounds like you have a pretty storied history there, Im jealous! I don't think there's anything *wrong* with having a more athletic approach to BJJ, in fact the majority of very successful pros take this approach. To be dynamic and strong, and to "muscle" in as you put it. This will very quickly expose defensive weaknesses your opponent has. The trouble is, that is doesn't work very well in a longer match, when your opponent has a tight guard game, or when you are on the defensive. The ADCC and IBJJF rules for example, are designed to force players to engage in a short timeframe to score points. This is conducive to an athletic approach because you have to worry less about the gas tank and if your opponent is on defence, he still has to attack sweeps etc to score points, which will sometimes expose his defence. In MMA, there are a couple of things to consider, primarily because striking is now involved. This can be a brutally effective way to psychologically wear your opponent down, and causing bleeding in the nose can very much restrict breathing or force them to breathe through the mouth, leaving the jaw slack and more susceptible to damage. The question becomes, is it better to hold position and employ typical BJJ psych/gassing methods, or cause as much damage as possible? The answer, in my opinion, lies with what your opponent's strengths are. If they have a great BJJ game and are likely to be able to get you off, then ground and pound. If they are weaker on the ground then start gassing them out, applying pain and controlling their breathing through body triangles and chest pressure etc. That being said, if you take no pains at all to conserve your energy, you WILL gas out early and you'll be left wide open. I watched one of your sister's fights, and she is really impressive but this sadly happened to her. She still won though, so it looks like she toed the line very well!
Love that he didn't smash his leg up. Matheus clearly didn't want to tap at first, but he could see Gordon clearly had the position and just wasn't cranking it intentionally and tapped. Good on both of them, Matheus for not taking advantage and Gordon for not cranking a sub that could have taken Matheus out of the game perhaps indefinitely.
Love the ending there. A lot of us went into BJJ because you can go all out and still not have to get hurt or hurt your opponent. The spirit of BJJ is displayed here very well.

You see how Gordon doesn’t rip the heel hook submission because he is truly in control of the leg and the heel. That is great technique. Every time I see guys hurting opponents with submissions I think about the way the guys at the top of the game never rip a sub.
The desire to be aggressive. He gave in to the pace just had to, got tired then the heel. Eye contact. You know it I know it. Great match let's do it again!
I don’t understand how these guys think they’re going to compete with Gordon without investing in a similar strength and conditioning program to his. They know his skill level is at least as high as their own, they know he’s a monster physically.. To challenge him it’s going to take someone of similar physicality.
@@brendon2462 He is about 30lbs larger than diniz lol We saw recently what happens when he goes against skilled guys his size like PENA or Buchecha....he hardly can do anything..cant pass guard or take the back or score a single point on Buchecha. Theres no reason why gordon shud be seen as superior to someone liek JT torres who is about to win the most staccked division on earth for a 3rd time ADCC 77kg. He is just seen as superior cuz he was born large enough to be 230lbs shredded and compete in absolutes.
@@REXAZOR But he did sweep Buchecha once and Pena twice if I remember correctly. He also got back control a few times no hooks but still control and takedowns. Pena didn't do anything to Gordon. A lot of that match with Pena he was pacing himself. Not going 100% right away. I believe he can pass Pena guard. But he will have to expend a lot of energy to do it. It was too risky so he didn't want to gass early. Will see if they meet in adcc under time limit. Buchecha I think stalled a lot didn't want to engage and do jiu jitsu. That's why Ryan didn't get anything else going. After the sweep he got passive. He was even penalized for it. He would engage just enough to avoid a penalty. Then back off again rinse and repeat not commit to anything. I personally don't like sub only. Because the no time limit doesn't encourage action. Guys can go slow half effort because it's a marathon. Neither wanted to risk gassing. It's a competition of conserve and make your opponent expend energy. I watched a break down. Gordon was making pena work harder in certain positions. While he conserved his energy for later. He was starting to turn up the effort. When he noticed pena starting to fade.
@@REXAZOR Beat a buchecha that Stalled the entire time, and destroyed Pena in the third match. Destroyed Cyborg while he was undersized. Destroyed Keenan Cornelius. Beat Craig Jones 3 times. Beat Tim Spriggs. Destroyed Pedro Marinho as well. Beat Josh Barnett. List goes on and on and on.

Funny how many people hate on Gordon Ryan whilst supporting a bunch of guys who would have cranked that heel hook, but hey they don't tweet mean things right 🤷♂🤷♂
You can see from this match that Diniz is rarely mounted. The bumping and muscling were white belt reactions. He’s obviously used to dominating and not being dominated.
I agree. There was zero technique. A lot of the top guys who are very explosive have this same issue. Technique never develops because always rely on strength and power
Diniz gave Gordon a great match. I’m an underdog fan so I get tired of seeing Ryan win. But at least it’s good to see a match where an opponent counters him well and even escapes from the bottom.
Did Gordon intentionally give up that potential mount from Kimora grip at 5:36? I know he chooses his positions/submissions, wondering if he could've moved into mount control and went from there.
prolly avenge that vinny loss, and if buchecha's got nothing to do then a proper sub win would be good since ryan won via a technicality the last time (buchecha got negative points)
In all honesty FloGrappling, you can make Jiu Jitsu more spectator friendly by improving the lighting. Compare the lighting they use for BJJ matches vs UFC or even wrestling. And what's with the smoke?
I have never tried to do this just don’t stand up pads was hurt at 22 and have one bad arm now but I do math real well and when I think of things I see it in my mind. Ryan, I think let Mateo get out of the smothering position. It seems like he didn't want it to end that way. 🤔 Again these vids are 💯 thanks for the uploads
The problem with this kind of competition is that the competitors are so freaking good that we really do not see how effective is what they both do against good-no-so-good fighters…. Both are awesome but it is hard to appreciate how good they are when they fight each other. I think that either, against a non trained athlete, would finish in 30 seconds.
Of course everyone has a chance- but not a big one. The sport of grappling is different from the sport of MMA, the same way we really don't know how well Gord's skills translates to MMA. Khabib by his own admission relies on punches to help advance position in grappling situations - take that away and he'll have to resort to other methods that he might not have trained as extensively. There was an old video of a young khabib losing on points (In a bjj ruleset, though) to a BJJ blackbelt in Russia. This was young khabib , yes, but he was sambo champ at that point in time. Just rules will always advantage those who have spent more time dedicating themselves to that particular ruleset.

Matheus blatantly struck Gordon in the face multiple times and Gordon just smiles and takes it. He has more control than I do.
4:05 it’s hard not to notice John on the background.
Big Dan could learn a thing or two about finishing the heel hook in this match.
Gordon predicted he'd be chasing Diniz around the mat. 5 seconds in GR goes to guard. Gamesmanship.
He’s a beast ! Congratulations to him!
Gordon was very gentlemanly with that finish. Seems like these always end the same.
I don’t understand how these guys think they’re going to compete with Gordon without investing in a similar strength and conditioning program to his. They know his skill level is at least as high as their own, they know he’s a monster physically.. To challenge him it’s going to take someone of similar physicality.
Funny Gordon is more skilled it's not just his strength and conditioning.
@@nathantheophilus4856 destroyed pena ? 😂 😂 He said he would put a passing clinic and dominate pena ...he did not pass pena once in 45 minutes lmfao and failed to take his back 3 times . He began to win due to cardio but sure dominated' pena 😂 show me the passing clinic ???
Also Gordon is never really undersized he is 230lbs shredded if he had the layer of fat that other guys do he would be 240-250+ so it's irrelevant he is as big as you should get for BJJ . Lol Josh Barnet 😂 😂 😂
I havent seen anyone in a lifetime being that technical. Dude knows a solution to everything.
When was the fight
great match… plus nice ending!
Incredible ❤️🔥🔥🔥
Gordon Ryan is so cool, he did Awesome. The fight was really good and I really enjoyed it😄❤👍
At 20:25 Gordon Ryan🥋🥇won the fight.
Congratulations Gordon!😄❤️
Love Gordon's style. Honestly would hate to roll against anyone with Mathaus to/spazz style lol
Unbelievable unbeatable 👏🏻
GR is a top bloke, takes a person with respect for other to finish this the way he did
Funny how many people hate on Gordon Ryan whilst supporting a bunch of guys who would have cranked that heel hook, but hey they don't tweet mean things right 🤷♂🤷♂
I love this channel 👊
Love the Videos Flo!
Nice comments by Xande Ribeiro! 💪
Phenomenal 💯
You can see from this match that Diniz is rarely mounted. The bumping and muscling were white belt reactions. He’s obviously used to dominating and not being dominated.
I don’t think so, most people don’t escape Gordon’s mount. The fact he didn’t isn’t luck.
I agree. There was zero technique. A lot of the top guys who are very explosive have this same issue. Technique never develops because always rely on strength and power
Great analysis by Xande.
Good Fight !!!
Amazing talent!
Gordon Ryan's sportsmanship is what I like the most about him, it makes the sport more enjoyable for everyone.
Gordon you are a BEAST of a man. When you mount you totally dominate your rival. 👍
is that Xande commentating? so cool

Great match
Gordon Ryan is a very BAD DUDE! EXCELLENT Jiu Jitsu match, no shame.👍💪😎🙏
I love this
I would love to learn from Gordon Ryan. I have such a similar game to his. There is just so many pieces to the puzzle that I'm missing.
Way better than most UFC matches, I think.
They should institute Gordon Ryan’s mount as a form of capital punishment
Just started following Ryan about 4 years ago. I was wondering,.....is there anyone left for him to beat???
prolly avenge that vinny loss, and if buchecha's got nothing to do then a proper sub win would be good since ryan won via a technicality the last time (buchecha got negative points)
Much respect for the king after that heal hook
In all honesty FloGrappling, you can make Jiu Jitsu more spectator friendly by improving the lighting.
Compare the lighting they use for BJJ matches vs UFC or even wrestling.
And what's with the smoke?
I have never tried to do this just don’t stand up pads was hurt at 22 and have one bad arm now but I do math real well and when I think of things I see it in my mind. My question is when they do this match does Gordon know where the attacks r coming and he see it or just practice and u feel it and know or how does he get so good 🤷♂️
When I watch Gordon on the mats, it really reminds me of myself. Just how absolutely dominant I am on the mats. In fact I think Gordon stole my game by coming to where I train and watching me roll. He should give me some of his money because I taught him everything he knows!!
🤡
@@ballbuster4317 I guess they didn't teach you the word "sarcasm" in school did they?
@@rationalthinker9612 shutup 🤡
That cross ashi entry 😍😍
“Master the Basics”
-Rickson.
Matt could use this now.
Great sportsmanship
Gordon’s transitions are a thing of beauty
Gordon is a literal snake in JiuJitsu, so elusive and strategic with both his defense into trying to setup his offense.
Amazing
walking out to Gimmie da loot is legendarily slept on. I’m reaching but it just fits with his aggressive style.
Gordon Ryan basically dominating world class talent - so beautiful and horrifying at the same time 😮
This would be so much better without random commentators babbling about themselves over the video 😑
RYan beats everybody in nogi. Lets see him compete in gi tournaments. Would be fun to see and a new challenge for him
Howd that top pressure work diniz?
What a godlike guy this Gordon is...
Ryan, I think let Mateo get out of the smothering position. It seems like he didn't want it to end that way. 🤔 Again these vids are 💯 thanks for the uploads
This Gordon Ryan is a Phenom
How can someone participate in this
The problem with this kind of competition is that the competitors are so freaking good that we really do not see how effective is what they both do against good-no-so-good fighters…. Both are awesome but it is hard to appreciate how good they are when they fight each other. I think that either, against a non trained athlete, would finish in 30 seconds.
So I'm completely new to this sport but it's amazing to watch! I do have a question. I watch a ton of ufc and Khabib have a chance against Gordon?
not in grappling, Gordon is way too good
Of course everyone has a chance- but not a big one.
No way
Diff weight class, one is a bjj specialist the other is a fighter.
But if i would bet who would win id say GR.
But again two very different athletes
Iraado✔💪
What style of jiu jitsu is this?
My closed captions said potatoes Denise and I feel like that name should live with him forever
nice match
