The songs are wonderful. The meaning of this tune that the love of this family for each other overcomes their poverty. Plus the one where Scrooge as a boy, abandoned at his school, must endure the sting of intense loneliness. Heavy stuff, but simply and beautifully handled. The schoolroom song can still bring a lump in the throat as it did 60 years ago
This tv special was just a simple animation but the characters, the script, the spirit of the message and the music made it an unforgettable classic. I grew up watching it every year but took it for granted at the time. I think Mr Dickens would have enjoyed it.
I associate the 1960s holiday TV season (from Thanksgiving to New Year's) w/ the annual broadcast of THE WIZARD OF OZ. I just saw that film again, & as always, cried like a baby. This one brings a tear to my eye as well. 🙂🙃
Remember the days when viewing these specials was an event. Three TV networks, limited broadcasting time, no video recording media. When this or anything Charlie Brown came on, it was truly an event not to be missed or you were SOL for a year. Now, being able to pop in a DVD and see it any time really makes the kids today take this stuff for granted. It's a shame.
a local tv station used to air it all the time throughout the '70s and '80s, but for some reason stopped it. At least they started to air their yule log again.
This masterpiece was a regular part of my family's Christmases back in the 1960s (during the days when we had to wait for it to be shown on network TV -- and then wait, again, until "next year...") I'd say that Dickens' message and call to repentance and mercy is powerfully presented -- but in the style of a real Broadway musical, with songs by Broadway greats Jule Styne and Bob Merrill. Why don't they show it on TV anymore? We wouldn't expect to find a bright diamond in a garbage can, would we?
Makes me cry every time I see it. I was Bob Cratchit in my fifth grade production of A Christmas Carol the year before this came out. An all time classic. I scour cable every year hoping it will be reprised, but alas, no luck. I have to get it on DVD. The best version because it has so many wonderful songs (All Alone in the World etc.).
It's amazing how a simple cartoon can bring back such tender memories of so many years past. The people who created the soundtrack were awesome! I remember getting scared during the 'Dispicable' song when the background turned black & all I could see were their mouths singing. I also remember feeling so sad for young Scrooge during the "I'm All Alone in The World" song. I think Charles Dickens would have enjoyed seeing this version of his work. It conveyed his message so well!
This little animated version this classic story was how I first came to know and LOVE "A CHRISTMAS CAROL" ever since I was a little girl.... and I still remember it so fondly.....
a classic special! I have it on VHS and watch it every year. Shame it doesn't get shown on TV anymore. (but then again, if it was stations would shred it to ribbons with commercial breaks every 5 to 10 minutes that show 6 commercials)
This was so brilliantly done, I love watching it and think it's second only to the Alistair Sim version of A Christmas Carol. Wish i could find the whole show. The songs were terrific.
NBC will broadcast this classic on Sat. Dec. 22, 2012, marking the 50th anniversary of the original broadcast. NBC hasn't broadcasted the program since 1967.
Please play this at Christmas for free and the greatest gift is giving us a merry Christmas kids need to see this movie please find it in your heart because you have a heart inside just like me too
mmmmm, razzleberry gravy on roast beast is the best. But unlike Tiny Tim, who prefers razzleberry dressing. I love an andouille sausage and apple, cornbread dressing.
Every now and then whenever I go to a restaurant and order my meal, I sometimes catch myself saying, "And razzle berry dressing!" whatever the hell that is!
Gerald's original theatrical outings were by this same company. If anything, it was IN Gerald's contract to do whatever UPA cast him in back then. (Ha! I bet you were just making a joke about Tiny Tim looking like Gerald! But it's actually him!)
LIVER pudding!! LOL. MMmmmmmmm... I don't remember WHEN the last time the kids were hoping and wishing for that on Christmas Day... Then again, I don't live in England.
nauort23 And in the 19th century when puddings were very popular. Not a pudding like jello, it was more like a meal item. The were made from fat and meat or other thing and boiled in a bag for hours. Lots of videos on them. A series on 18th century cooking has a few good ones.
Every so often, I find myself yelling out, _"And razzleberry dressing!"_
wazzle berry graby has been a meme in my family for years 😂😂
Same
Me too, lol
I thought I was the only goof that does that....😂
Me too. Just a slice
I'm blk f 70 yrs old and I watch this every year. I love this cartoon version of A Christmas Carol. It's heartwarming...I love the songs
I also. I look forward to watching it every Christmas.❣
This is a classic that should be remembered and celebrated.

@@twc3546 yeah there are a lot of people who are living in this condition. Makes me how selfish people be these days.
I am glad that so many people love this, I no longer see this as a guilty pleasure, but a real treasure.
This always makes me cry..I love this movie.

My favorite Christmas Carol was always starring Mr magoo as the scrooge.
Mine, too.
When you don't appreciate what you have, come back to this song.
One of my favorite holiday movies. This song still represents the Christmas Spirit.
This was a childhood favorite, along with Charlie Brown, Rudolf, Frosty.
Don't forget the Grinch!
And Santa Claus
for those wondering, razzleberry is a combination of raspberry and blackberry. It was created entirely because of this christmas special.
Bob Cratchit has a beautiful voice
Jack Cassidy was the voice of Bob Cratchit
Love Jack Cassidy. Now listening to him I recognise it.
@@northheadnoveltiesyou mean David Casidy's father?
The late, great Jack Cassidy voiced both the speaking and singing of Cratchett.
One the all time best songs in a Christmas Special ever. It represents a big part of Christmas is about. Thanks for uploading! :)

Agree

Charlie brown ?? You mean milly bobby browns brother ??
I remember getting the TV Guide and circling all the Christmas specials in it with my sister!
Jim Backus was brilliant as Mr. Magoo & Scrooge.
It is my favorite one too, and I cry each time a watch it.
So do I.
The best from my childhood. Say "A candle in a jar..." and millions of GenXers will answer "...of razzleberry dressing."
and this gen z /alpha. I grew up with this.
And Boomers! This came out in 1962.
@@PC-dc1kv I just took it out of the library for 12/25/24 !
My first exposure to "A Christmas Carol" was via this Mr. MaGoo movie.

I miss seeing this during the holiday season. It is my absolute favorite. I was 8 when it first was aired.
a local tv station used to air it all the time throughout the '70s and '80s, but for some reason stopped it. At least they started to air their yule log again.
I loved this as a kid, but...
has anybody noticed that the one child looks
strangely like George Jetson? xD
Tiny Tim is played by UPA's Gerald Mc Boing Boing.
Yes, just watch the entire "play" with my older sister
George got around.
Funny you should say that! Lol
I just took note of that, too - lol...
Jule Styne was a brilliant song writer. This is as good as anything on broadway.
Great melody. Lyrics, too.
And Jack Cassidy (Bob Cratchit) was a Broadway leading man in those days. He really sells this song.
I love every song in this cartoon version of a classic tale I agree this Broadway quality ❤
The reason why my heart beats inside of me love is the greatest gift of life never feel alone in a world cause your heart is everything

I'm a 2000s baby, but my brain still somehow repeatedly goes "AND RAZZLEBERRY DRESSING!" for no reason whatsoever. I was raised right.
In my opinion this film had the best Bob Cratchit.
Thank God they have this on DVD. I never see it on any cable stations anymore.
One of the best.
When it is on, they cut it badly

This is one of my favorite versions of the Christmas Carol story; this and Mickey's Christmas Carol.
Thurston Howell III as Mr. Magoo.
IN-deed!
Thanks for the tip!
Jim Bacus, actually. He played Thurston Howell, and voiced Mr. Magoo.
Gerald McBoingboing should've won an oscar for this--or at least a grammy for this song.
I don't think they ever admitted it was him.
I love this. I watched it every year growing up. I still feel the same way I did as when I first saw it🙏🙏❤️
DAMN I FEEL LIKE A IN THE 70S WHEN THEY SPECIALS LIKE THESE LOVE IT. TODAYS CHILDREN DONT HAVE CLUE

Great animated production and the songs won awards at the time. Who'd have guessed magoo had it in him?
I was surprised nobody had posted it sooner. Great memories for me too.
I saw this original broadcast in my childhood. It was the first version of A Christmas Carol I ever saw.
I love this... Thank you for posting it...
Scrooge was freakin' hilarious in this. He reminded me of every cranky old man in the world.
Dickens knew everything.
My friends at Musical Theatre Village sing this every year in their version of Christmas with Scrooge
Jack Cassidy was a great singing Bob Cratchit. He gets the show-stopping tune to sing.
we decorate the tree to this and I break out in song everytime much to my sons embarrassment, God bless us everyone
Wow it's December 17 2025 and I am just now getting around
to seeing this!! I have loved this special since I was a child...

2 things I've always wondered about this: what the hell is razleberry dressing and razleberry gravy? And woofljelly cake? LOL
NBC will broadcast this classic on Sat. Dec. 22, 2012, marking the 50th anniversary of the original broadcast. NBC hasn't broadcasted the program since 1967.
They showed it on NBC last night. Rather truncated for it's 50th anniversary I thought.
70 and I also watch it on disc every December!

Is that Jack Cassidy singing as Bob Cratchit? Sure sounds like it.
It was.
He was so talented. I absolutely loved him a Bob Cratchit.
I thought so too ... they missed the whole Broadway scenes :(
@CapeCodLindsey My personal favorite is Winter was Warm.

One of them looks like George Jetson... even has the same type of collar.
Mr Magoo walks into the fireplace. LOL.
How do you suppose they got Gerald McBoingBoing out of his contract to come play Tiny Tim??
Gerald's original theatrical outings were by this same company. If anything, it was IN Gerald's contract to do whatever UPA cast him in back then.
(Ha! I bet you were just making a joke about Tiny Tim looking like Gerald! But it's actually him!)
Pehaps his performance in this cartoon got him the part in The Jetsons. :b
Tiny Tim’s brother reminds me somewhat of George Jetson as a child. Same animators, I surmise?
Bob Cratchit sounds uncannily like Moses/God (the one voiced by Val Kilmer in Prince of Egypt) when he speaks
Those of you who would like to see this as an annual holiday 'lagniappe', raise your hand.
