Thank you for mentioning grades, this is a huge point that most young athletes don't think about. Your education will take you much further in life than any sport will. Back in the day when I played coaches hated dealing with off the field stuff such as poor grades and eligibility. I constantly remind my son in middle school of this so he gets into the habit now of keeping his grades up and not learn a hard lesson when he gets to HS.
As an ex college athlete, old athlete now lol, wife of a high school coach and mother of two young athletes, I am here to say this video is amazing. This tips easily apply to all sports. Great job!!
Thank you coach! Most coaches are doing this for the love of the game and want to show these kids a little something, team cohesiveness and goal oriented goals. Awesome content!
One thing that I've seen, about the no hustle part, i agree, but when it comes to being angry about performing poorly, it shows your coach that you wanna improve, but don't let that overtake your job as a player
Great video, Coach. As a twenty year High School Varsity Head Coach, I can tell you that you did your homework on this one....as usual. Great info and tips for incoming players to any program. Keep up the good work.
So in 2012 I was doing tryouts for my 7th grade middle school, and my friend at the time ACTUALLY CRIED over playing the position the coach wanted him to. The coach made him play right outfield, he signed up for pitcher, I guess the coach wanting to see him at his full capabilities broke him. He was screaming, crying, and threw his equipment on the ground, and all of us in the dugout getting ready to play our part was so confused at what was happening. Here is where this story makes me get upset. After all of that making a scene and having a hissy fit. HE MADE THE TEAM!! I wouldn't have a huge problem with that, but its that fact that I was really respectful, I was a much better player, I was dressed properly (he was not), and I has A's and B's. I don't know if his Mom was telling the coach to make him get on the team or what. But all I know is that my friend was booted off the team 2 weeks after because he lost the first game.
Some how I didn’t hit the ball the day of tryouts but I did pretty good pitching and running I had a good attitude but I’m still confused how I made the team and he asked me if I was really wanting to do this and if this is something I want to do in high school and when I said yes he was like ok good but I made the team
I’m going into high school this year and I’m really nervous about making the team so I’m definitely going to be using this to maximize my chances cause I really want to make the team
Hey hope you help me, I have tryouts March first and I’m trying to get in shape I being running for a week now but I don’t have nobody to catch with and I live in an apartment, what can or should do??
8th grade. From Houston, been passionate about baseball my entire life. Never could afford to play on a real team, only played with my friends after school. Finally about to try out. Conditioning is Friday and Saturday, and tryouts are February 16. Thanks dude. I hope I do well.
Concentrate on what you're going to do. Turn these negative points into positive ones. "I'm going to hustle, I'm going to arrive 14 minutes early and see if I can help the coach drag the field or anything he/she needs, I'm going to etc, etc"
The looking like a ball player thing is huge, I made a team wearing basketball shorts with no cleats just a glove but in the meeting where the coach told me I made it he had a pair of pants and belt for me he said “ I almost told ya to go as soon as ya showed up wearing that, but I’m Glad I didn’t. Get it together son.”
That is a True statement Butt if a athlete is out playing. Other kids please please please coaches do not start child over other Kids or Teenagers. Because you think your kid has game it's Getting old. I Say Fair is Fair all any parent is looking for.
Thx a lot I’m training for tryouts and I’m not even half way through 8th grade I wanna come ready and on my A game I’m more on the smaller side(110 pounds) and I need all the advice I can get I wanna go there confident Thank you for the advice!
some may get this and some might not but a big turn off for me is if a player thinks they are better then they actually are but in the bad way!! for instance they don't give themselves room for improvement.
Most of these are good life lessons that transfer well to the working life. Do most of these and when times get tough and your company has lay-offs these might just make the difference!
🤣 ive always wore aviators and i went to tryouts this season and my coach laughed at me and now my nickname is cobra from the movie. My coach told me i need to get oakley aviators.
@@tannernielson5312 but we’ll never know. And doesn’t matter if he would’ve been. The fact is, he cheated. And that’s not right no matter who you are. If he was so good regardless, why would he have cheated anyways?
Can we teach the major leaguers about the no hustle point? It drives me nuts when I see a pro lollygagging down the first base line. Just look at all the times Javy Baez created a run just by hustling.
Wow his advice is like the exact opposite of softball tryouts advise lol. For example, we like to wear a shirt from another team to show off how good we are by how good of a travel team we were on and we wear bright colors so that we WILL stick out and get noticed for the team.
#11- The returning star acting like he’s already made the team…its poor leadership. Everyone knows he’s gonna make it, but he needs to act as if he is on the bubble.
Such bs doesn't matter what u got on .. if u all around player it don't matter ... athletic skills does the talking .. for example I went to tryout camp for D1 school in middle of basketball season wasn't focus on baseball still got offered cuz my name and skill ... baseball is business just like other sports coaches need wins to keep there job
Be open about playing other positions, coaches like players they can move around. Also, don't try to boss around other players at the tryouts, even if you are really talented, it might show that you have attitude problems

Thinking that you know more than the coaches is a no no
@Kaden Underwood when players are uncoachable because they think that they know everything. You can't tell them anything.
My tryouts are 2 weeks away so thanks for the tips it will help me in tryouts

learn to reduce stress to lower your nervousness. Breathing exercises can relieve stress. Be prepared. Confidence reduces nervousness as well.
I’m doing the same this year! Yeah I’m really nervous too
Did u end up making the team?
