Important note: while Autotune has become slang for all pitch correction, Autotune is the name of a very specific and popular plug-in. The software used in this video is Melodyne, not Autotune. Autotune adjust pitch real-time, whereas Melodyne is a pitch editor that can only process previoisly recorded samples. Both are ridiculously powerful tools.
Yeah, he was trying to explain it I think but he was so casual the abstraction went over their heads. Autotune is a program that does most of the work for you, but it's not convincing, so it works more as a sound effect rather than for cheating people into thinking you sing well. (Also, as you say, it works in real time. Obviously if it works in real time there's virtually no possibility of you customizing the output save for setting some automatic rules. I don't know, I've never used it.) Melodyne is the name of a proprietary program that lets you heavily customize the output with huge granularity, as shown in the video. An experienced user and a talented *enough* singer can make it sound convincing, which is why the producer in this video was like "if you're in the business you kinda just assume". In addition to that last point, some very talented people are so talented that a producer might assume incorrectly that their voice was autotuned. Jacob Collier doing 11 point harmonies with multiple recordings of himself in his early videos had to explain in the description that no, he didn't use Melodyne, he really is just that good of a singer. [Also he probably discarded the takes that had mistakes. That helps. It'd be silly to think he's a god that always nails the singing perfectly on his first take. He sings extremely well, but he's still human.]
I'd argue from a linguistic standpoint that while "autotune" may be a brand name, it has become a generic word due to popular usage. When you say "autotune" everyone knows what you mean, but most people won't know what Melodyne is. This is similar to what happened to "velcro" and "super glue" for example, those were brand names that now have become generic words. It's even more true when you consider that "autotune" can be used as a verb or adjective: "This song has been autotuned", or "An autotuned song".
once David Garrett had an interview in our breakfast tv and they asked him is he sold his soul to the devil like paganini. He laughed and said that this devil is called "practice" ^.*

I'd actually be quite curious to see what Hilary Hahn's playing would look like in this - it definitely wouldn't be level, and the center frequency of each note wouldn't always match equal temperament. For reference, I used to be in a very good small choir that often sang outside equal temperament - we actually preferred singing without the organ for exactly that reason, because the organ would lock us into ET. We mostly just sang our altered tunings intuitively, but I do remember our choirmaster occasionally telling one section or another to deliberately sing a particular note slightly flat or sharp because of harmonic context.

THE FAKE PIE Dude you’re being so aggressive..... Also it’s not always a good thing which you’d know if you’ve ever been able to physically see the plastic surgery... which is when it’s botched. The only difference? You can fix botched autotune, you can’t fixed botched plastic surgery.
@@CheshieD i guess nuance is a thing? The thing about plastic surgery is that is like anything in the world can be good or bad. For example for people who have ruined their face in accident or fixing deformative, it can be a life changing gift. But as you say there can be botched surgeries, but if there isnt enough customer demand of plastic surgery for people that is solely looking for beauty, that will drive the prices up for plastic surgery for everyone. Solely reserving it for medical purposes or victims of accidents will limit any growth in the industry. Which also means any innovation that could have improve plastic surgery procedures will be hampered by lack of revenue in the industry. Basic supply and demand. On one hand plastic surgery can be a super good thing, on the other hand it does condone vanity in certain clientale. So thre question is are we going to condone a service in process of becoming better? Improve on it? Or give up. It is true though, just take a look at lasik eye surgery that can cure myopia. It only became cheaper, safer and more avaliable due to constant innovation and growth in industry. It is a catch 22 situation.

The craziest thing with Melodyne is it has a harmonic detection algorithm that can actually break up chords, and process them as individual notes. I once had a task to process a recording of an orchestra for use as a backing for a live theatre show. I was given a single, stereo take of a high school orchestra, which I'm guessing had been recorded during a lunch hour. At one climactic point, a french horn played a flat note (almost a full semitone out). Spent a few minutes in Melodyne correcting it, and the end result sounded simply majestic. (Had to push the final note quite a few cents off "concert A" tuning, to tune it to the orchestra itself.) Honestly, I wish I could have been there to assist with the recording session, because it required a substantial amount of post-processing to make it sound both natural and predictable enough for the live performers, thanks to certain resonances in the hall it was recorded in, and the conductor's expressive (but loose) tempi.
I felt that when Eddy was hard triggered by the tuning program to detect being out of tune by cents. I bet he'll challenge the program to prove he is always in perfect pitch x'D
Would be interesting to see what it says about performances by great violinists. Of course these slight imprecisions are precisely what makes these perfomances real and expressive so it's not like this would be a great revelation.
Violin, double bass, viola, cello Long ago, the four strings played together in harmony. Then everything changed when the viola attack. Only the sound bender, master of all sound could stop them, but when the world need him most he vanished. A hundred years passed and Brett and his husband Eddy discovered the new soundbender named Shaun, and all though his editing skills are great he still has a lot of work before he can defeat the violas. But I believe Shaun can save the orchestra. (Cue avatar intro)

Every video TwoSet makes with Shaun makes everyone smile a little more
Let’s face it, this whole video is just one big roast against pop singers and bass
Next music battle: Twoset vs Drake (and other autotuned pop singers)
This is getting very INteresting

I just realized Shaun's glasses are like a miniature version of Brett's Glasses.

"Do you struggle playing in tune?"
Me, playing my piano that hasn't been tuned in 6 years: I CAN'T play in tune, I'm too poor.
Start a gofundme to tune your piano :D

how much does it cost to tune a piano?

Autotune is the plastic surgery of music.... wow
and ? it's a good thing
@@CheshieD jup. that's why autotune is a good thing.
It is a catch 22 situation.
nmp-shadow not the point of my comment but ok
brett: omg im like controlling sound?!?!?
me: uh.... brett i know its muhc much harder but thats kind of what you do on the violin too...?
I never thought of it that way

I think Editor-San had fun with this video
8:50 the good news is, one can still demand live performances, like when dueling.
Honestly I love what those are doing. They're showing classical music to a wider audience and making it 'fun' for those who wouldn't otherwise listen to classical music. As a mUsIcIan (grade 6 flute and self taught on piano) I'm really glad someone is doing this❤
While roasting pop and and other things 😅
@@estera4176 Ah yes, that too, of course😂
I watch their videos and I don't even play an instrument (and I have no intention of learning). Their videos are funny and educational for even the non-musical!

I honestly don't know how did I think of this
The craziest thing with Melodyne is it has a harmonic detection algorithm that can actually break up chords, and process them as individual notes.
(Had to push the final note quite a few cents off "concert A" tuning, to tune it to the orchestra itself.)
Honestly, I wish I could have been there to assist with the recording session, because it required a substantial amount of post-processing to make it sound both natural and predictable enough for the live performers, thanks to certain resonances in the hall it was recorded in, and the conductor's expressive (but loose) tempi.
That was fascinating!
Other youtubers: uploads once a week😕
Twosetviolin: uploads almost every day😃
2:01 is pretty much just School Orchestra Rehearsal
Why do I suddenly got weird thought that maybe Shaun is editor-san 😂
I was literally just watching eddy do the naruto
run and dab in the middle of the street in Japan and then this epic piece of video
Violin, double bass, viola, cello
Long ago, the four strings played together in harmony.

I love how editor San added a sound arrow to his head 😂 that was genius
