  • This week I'm power carving patterned plywood for the second time. I glued up two blanks with two different patterns and made two different styles of bowls.

For cutting bowl blanks on a bandsaw, I use a simpe jig made from a board and a nail through it

These bowls took a lot of time and patience, but it worth of it. The pattern, shape and color are beautiful and artistic, great.

I always love the patterned plywood projects! Really great tip about using a straight piece of wood as a guide - makes total sense but never would have thought of it!

In the old days in Transylvania region Romania these bowls with handles on the side were used to deposit bread dough till dough grows so they can make bread in big brick ovens :)
Greetings from a Transylvanian vampire, i really enjoy you're work.

Man I love these projects Michael! It so directly embraces the aesthetic of plywood to the point that it almost becomes a whole new material (like the stuff Woby is doing)
    Beautiful projects!

Amazing work! I love how you went the extra mile and carved feet out of the bottom. I probably would have just drilled some holes with a forstner bit, stuck in some dowels and called it done. Your way made it look so much nicer.

Power Carving with these discs can be VERY Dangerous, just so you know & try it one day. If you're not paying attention & it bites the other way, it can mean your hand is permanently messed up. Go search it if interested.

Nice work, I want to try the patterned ply as soon as I can buy some after the lock down.
I was looking for something to do this week and found an old weathered chunk of pine, I cut 80cm of and made a trencher to put baguettes in when I am barbecuing, the 1st time I had ever thought of making something like that. Then I click on this video and you are making trenchers. Mine is deeper though and I used a Forstner followed by what is basically a circular saw blade for angle grinders, textured the surface by following the grain with different gouges and a bees wax finish. Arbor Tech is hard to find in Spain and expensive.
I like the rolling bench, that is a great idea.

*IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE* please NEVER drag a piece of wood horizontally across a table saw blade, EVEN if you are Michael Alm. This will result is injury and damage to the blade. Michael is very lucky. Please only use a table saw as it is intended forward motion only folks. Thanks - This message as been brought to you in part by a Master of Fine Arts Teacher, long time wood worker, and concerned viewer. Thank you!

I love watching the process of how you make each of your products. It definitely looks, and probably did, take a long time to make each one. There are times when I'm making products that I think will take a few hours, but they end up taking an entire day or a few days to make from beginning to end. How long did this project take you to make and did you think it would be a faster or longer project?
