Hi Tim, I was glad you did get hit by any fragments of the outer ring. I bought one of the kits from Ron. Been lucky, no problems like you had, but I went very slow and use a little beeswax on the cutter ever so often. Thanks for the video. It’s a fun process and yields some nice projects. Two contrasting boards cut one after the other in the same way (matching rings as exactly as possible) the alternating rings of same size in glue up yields a deeper neat bowl. Cheers, Tom
Tim, I saw on another turning channel Gary made a board that mounted to his bed ways that slid in between the board that wouldn’t allow the rings to fly off. Love watching you and your many ideas. Best to ya.
Nicely done! I've seen that technique using a bandsaw but never on a lathe! The slo-mo makes you realize how fast accidents happen compared to our reaction time. Glad you are ok.

Great video. I hot glue a piece of cardboard with a few dabs of hot glue to the back of the board. When the parting tool hits the cardboard stop. The hot glue is removed with a little alcohol.

It's similar in principle to a segmented bowl. Same technique essentially just instead of using little chunks glued together, you use solid rings.

Lower the likelihood to an acceptable level. The end product is worse that review. Well done.
How far from the edge of the board do you start the first ring cut. Then each ring follows to start the next cut? Is it 3/4 of a inch?
I think part of the problem is the back isn't flat, so it stays partially attached and flie@ around.

This seems like a great way to cheaply practice bowl turning which has been elusive (mostly due to lack of time to practice).
What Lowe's has tulip wood? Ron Brown does have some nice stuff.
You spoke of being sensitive to the tulip poplar. I am allergic to walnuts bot black and English. I have always wondered if I were to use anything made from their wood would I also be allergic to that. Don't want to test it because it could kill me.

It’s not Tulip Poplar, but Douglas Fir. Sorry, Lowes doesn’t know much about much. Arborist generally don’t end up retiring to work for Lowes. 😊

Tim, ever try using a crowbar as a lathe chisel? It can really make your projects explode! Oh, wait...is that what you used on this project?
Looks more like pine or spruce than tulip wood, just some uncommon figure in it that I've seen before.
cutting the bevels on the bandsaw would have been much easier. greetings

Well the bowl may inexpensive but tooling is expensive and while, as a turner, I can appreciate the product I suspect that that average person wouldn't appreciate it.
Tooling doesn’t have to be expensive. You can make your own.
The papa1947 does some fantastic segmented bowls with a homemade cutting guide using this technique
