    This 70 year old first time seeing this movie.
    The dialogue is sprinting , and the writer is to be congratulated, posthumously.
    The acting is superb and flawless. The only slight flaws,,, the falling scene,,, they just didn’t have the technology. And then the death scene at the end for the old husband; he kind of fell hoaky. But barely a hair of a difference to give this great movie 2 big thumbs up.
    They just don’t make ‘em like they used to. 👏👏👏👏and Lucy ❤!

Galt's encounter with Foss leads to a web of intrigue involving prosperous art collector Hardy Cathcart (Clifton Webb) and his young wife, Mari (Cathy Downs). • @LJ-ht4zs

    • @LJ-ht4zs
      @LJ-ht4zs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not only the smoking altered her voice - she spoke in a higher pitched voice in playing the Lucy character - which strained her vocal cords - but the higher pitch was in tune with her Lucy character. Desi Arnaz told her not to go on tv interviews during that time - her natural voice was much lower and huskier and would blow the Lucy character.

They were a wealthy estranged middle age couple, who basically came to despised each other. Now faced with death he reveals his true feelings, his love and devotion for her and the moment he first saw her, saying she was the most beautiful creature he’d ever seen. It’s a beautiful scene, that really stirs up emotion. He played it well, especially when you consider he was a gay man. You could feel the emotion. Wonderful actor, class act.

For example, how could a guy in a cheap suit and beat-up fedora who doesn't quibble at the offering price be mistaken for a fat cat art buyer?

    Ball and Stevens are simply wonderful together in this film, and I can’t think of another noir that offers this particular male/female dynamic. Stevens worked a lot in the next few years after this, never quite attained major stardom but was dependably watchable. He later did some interesting work as a director (Time Table and Cry Vengeance).

    Lucy was a beaut! Her legs weren't bad either. Great looking women with her colouring. Two others on my list would be Virginia Mayo & Rhonda Fleming. All gone. So sad. Lucy deserved much better than Desi Arnaz, who gave her a really hard time; it showed towards the end of her life.

    • @LJ-ht4zs
      @LJ-ht4zs ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lucy's first marriage to Desi lasted 20 years and 2nd marriage to Gary Morton lasted 28 years - till she died. Also, she and Desi remained close till he died (which was 2 years before her death.) He sent her flowers on their anniversary for at least 15 years after their divorce and the last thing they said to each other on the phone was Ï love you, a day or two before he died. (His daughter Lucie Arnaz) was with him before he died. and realized that the date they last spoke together would have been their 46th wedding anniversary.

      Maybe so, but Desi Arnaz was a business genius. By 1958 60% of television programming was owned by Desilu. They were incredibly wealthy.

    Lucille Ball was the most powerful woman in movie industry. She co-founded Desilu with Dezi Arnaz but soon did run the company alone, she did not only produce countless classic series like I love Lucy, Mission Impossible, The Untouchables and Star Trek but owned RKO and at some time her company was the biggest player in Hollywood. She could do whatever she wanted. No other woman - or man had so much power in Hollywood, not even Walt Disney or Louis B. Mayer who actually were employees of their companies.

    I watched this because of a recommendation from the Classic Cinema channel, here on TH-cam. It’s in a list of, “10 Underrated Classics,” which I can only guess that sank into obscurity due to the leading man not being an instantly recognisable icon of the noir period? Yet he puts in a sturdy enough tough guy gumshoe performance for this movie. The rest of the cast are all top draw character actors that we would expect to find in any A List movie. And Lucile Ball, ahhh . . . Lucile Ball . . . Well, the title of her long running TV show, “I Love Lucy,” says it all for me. She’s gorgeous in this. And it’s patently clear that her character makes up the other half of the detective duo, as the leading man would have been sunk on several occasions without her brains and know how. There’s even a nod to the Thin Man movies in her dialogue, which did make me wonder? Were they thinking of setting up a series of movies with this husband and wife, harder boiled version of Dick and Dora?
    Highly enjoyable, if slightly unevenly paced, with one or two gasp out loud moments, and a few dark laughs to balance out the noir with a little sparkle here and there. Certainly a worthwhile watch for fans of the genre. I enjoyed it immensely, thanks. 👍✌️

    Nothing like a great Noir film like this one. Good story, great lines, love everything about it. The scenery is great, wardrobe, every detail is what makes this an awesome movie. Why can’t they make movies like this anymore?
    Lucy plays the kind of gal who can take you or leave you, but makes you feel she is right for you whether you think so or not, ehh, either way she comes out a survivor, strong character. In any movie she played her eyes alone can make the scenes intriguing, suspenseful, and keeps you guessing for the next turn around the corner. Fantastic actor!! Thank you for sharing this wonderful film!

When they say Queen of the B's she is A+ with me. Some of these films I have seen several times - wish I had bought them - would have. been a lot cheaper, but what the heck - enjoyed them.
