- 223 Remington Hornady Critical Defense 73 grain FTX ammo ballistics gel test fired from a CZ 527 Carbine with 18.5 inch barrel.

All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7-10’ from the shooting bench, depending on the cartridge and muzzle blast.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 10’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.

That CZ is such an nice rifle. Shame theyre no longer produced.

I feel the same about the Remington 788
Incorrect CZ 600 model line that replaced 527 is controlled feed a quiet superior to previous lines on every metric. CZ 600 Lux in 223 is direct successor of rifle featured here.
You might also want to look at the Speer Gold Dot line up if your going to test some self defense rounds for hunting. They are a bonded soft point like the Federal Fusion but have 3 different weights to choose from.
If this is accurate then it's a excellent round that I will definitely use. These rounds do need a bump in velocity too

That gun is sexy! I have a few 223’s. My LTR, POF P415, and H&R heavy barrel 223 from 95’ I bought new. All tac drivers! My POF and LTR will will shoot .2”/.3”…same hole at 200 yards with hand loads.

Question: Are you planning to do the Hornady Black 75 gr HD SBR rounds? They're designed for short barreled rifles, but I'm curious what their performance is like from a loner barrel 🤷🏽♂️
I love the Hornady SBR 75 grain loads in my 12.5 inch AR. I use for on duty. Amazing!!!! Low flash and fairly quiet.
Id like to see the speer gold dot ammo (various weights) as well as the winchester ranger T ammo.
I'd like to see it loaded up hotter too, However, it seems to perform pretty well for its intended purpose.
One of us must be psychic. I was just thinking that I need a smaller doe to top up the freezer, and wanted to give 223 a try. Had some critical defense sitting around and was wondering how it would do.

Most of the people I know that are shoot though. Love her evolution out of a 223. Or using a twenty four inch barrel or twenty two
Some ballistic coefficient numbers on their bullets, this 73gr FTX would be plummeting velocity pretty quick at longer ranges.

Absolutely, being that it is a self defense round I don’t think it’s meant for long or even moderate range.

If you hunt in a place with smaller deer, that would probably work fine. All else being equal.
Two concerns - long bullets require a faster rifling twist and self defense bullets typically fragment easily so under penetration can result. Thanks for another great video.

Why would they put velocities on the box for a 20” barrel for a defensive round that everyone will be using a 16” that’s crazy.
And they probably used a 24” barrel if I were to guess.
