    Hi Deborah, yes, there's a lot of work involved. You can do chasing and repousee on other things like sandbags, stacks of cardboard, wood, etc. You can make tools out of plastic, brass and wood. Nancy Megan Corwin talks about some of these options in her book. Thanks. N

    At 8:04 to 8:09 you reference "some kind of weird tool, don't know what that was." I recognize it as a "cape chisel." These were (and occasionally still are) used to make grooves and notches in machine parts. The working edge of the original tool would have been slightly wider than the "cheeks" to allow the tool room in the groove it was making.
    Oh, and AWSOME video series! Thanks for making this tutorial!

    I loved the medieval reference at the beguinning of the video!
    I'm enjoying your videos very much, I learned how to chase and repoussé some years ago but haven't practised in a long time, so your tutorials are helping a lot :D
    Thank you Nancy!

    Thanks for the video Nancy, that tool at 8.13, it used to be a cross cut chisel, generally used for cutting steel cold. I'm making some steel acanthus leaves from 3mm plate and found this useful, despite being a blacksmith,I've never gone into this side.

    Looks like a lot of fun and concentration once you get going. I need some pitch. Cheers Nancy.

    Wow. I had NO idea so much went into this. Is using pitch the only way to do this? (yuck lol) I can't wait to see the others! Thank you for sharing. As always, I look forward to your videos!

    Hi Trek, if they are, let's say finished tools that you buy, which are hardened and tempered, you can cold finish them. It takes longer and is tougher on your files but, it is certainly possible. I use this process when I purchased tools that are not quite finished - sharp edges, etc. Annealing just makes it all easier. Thanks. N

    If they are already hardened can you still use sand disc on them or do you have to heat the tool again to soften it ? Great video as usual thanks again.

    Love the new videos! I always watch your tutorials to help spark any inspiration, which sadly, has gone missing of late. Any chance to win some of your old tools through a raffle on your website?

    @Deborah: I've thought of this, too. I was thinking of dollar store white candle wax, using heat gun to melt into appropriate vessel. Then proceeding as normal with metal sheet, using heat gun to soften surface, applying metal, and so forth. Mind you, I've never done chasing or repousse'. But I sure want to, just can't afford any more supplies at the moment.

    Why yes, it does! It's called the "burn off cat fur" setting. The warning states something about not doing it while the cat is in the fur, hmmm....

    Hi Miss, well, I am setting up a jewelry studio at an art space called Chimera in Sebastopol, CA. All of my unused tools are going there, alas...Sorry - but, I'll have a place to teach and it will help out the community so, it's all good. I'll think of some kind of raffle, soon. Thanks for writing. N

    Thanks Match. I love the book too. So much info. Ganoksin has a bunch of old, out of print jewelry books available for download. They are on a variety of different techniques and are only 5.00 each. ganoksin.com/listing/Category/rare_historical_Metalsmithing_ebooks

    There must be some reason the pitch works best. I just cannot imagine working with it lol. I would end up with more on me I am afraid. And it's basically sort of like tar! Eww. lol!

  • @NancyHamiltonJewelry
    @NancyHamiltonJewelry  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh Deborah, stop being such a girl! Ha! The red pitch is actually much cleaner. You could wear gloves and an old, ratty apron? Thanks for the comment. N
