I am not sure these publications are all of them. I used to be part of a local gaming website in South Africa who managed to get onto the panel to vote in the Game Awards. There was a process before nominations went public where we submitted out votes beforehand, and I think it was tallied up to get to the final nominees we see made public. There is then again a voting process where publications submit their votes based on the nominees, which goes into the pool of votes with the what the other publications vote and the public. As far as I can remember the public vote was weighted less than the publications. What I don't know is if any of the publications had more weight than others. We did this for two years. before the website eventually went bust. Edit: I am also not sure if this still works like this, but this is how it worked a few years ago.
Everyone knows we're watching game awards for new game trailers, not for the awards themselves. If they wanted legitimite awards by jury, people from all around the world not just the Anglosphere.

Technology exists, design could and development can be done to help eliminate use of bots - this is the biggest issue. Why limit it to a curated list of jurors? It’s an advert. The games in the nominations tend to be from big companies that pay for advertising slots on the game awards. Astrobot is a goty contender. That alone shows how much of a joke the awards show is. Astrobot is a straight Nintendo clone. Sony has absolutely no originality. Other than more remastered remakes of already remastered and remade games from last Gen. Ohh wait, Astro bot remaster will be out next year 😂😂😂. Soon all these square enix and third party games sony uses to make themselves better will no longer help them with GOTY awards because sony lost all exclusivitiy due to noone buying their games on their PlayStations. suuuurrreeee. The inclusion of remakes and remasters for GOTY has been a thing for years now. The only thing that changed was making everything eligible in all categories. If anything this was to help shadow of the erdtree get nominated for GOTY.
Absolute bullshit, Sony produces games that are cinematic which automatically targets a way wider audience than some niche games, thats why they get so many votes. My aunt recently started playing some of Sonys exclusives this says a lot
The voting should be weighed in the opposite way: 10 % media outlets, 90 % gamers. I don't necessarily share the opinion that the event is too long btw - I don't have an issue with a 4-hour-show. However - the balancing is off with too much weight put on advertisement (game announcements are just advertisements after all) and not enough on the actual awards. That imbalance has to be adressed.
The fact this show isn't counting the full year shows this show is messed up. Games are still releasing in December yet lets nominate Games in November.
I absolutely love ER but no DLC should ever be up for GOTY,and this is coming from a gamer that only plays souls likes or soul games...but I cannot see a world that BMW don't win GOTY and I bought it day one and still haven't beaten Erlang. That game is just goated.
Overwatch winning game of the year over Uncharted 4, Dark Souls 3 and Doom at the game awards 2016 is the worst award of all time. Hopefully we don't have another repeat here with a DLC winning.
Meh, hype has always been like 50% of the reason any of these games get awards. Technical or game design excellence is barely in the top 10 considerations for these rewards.
I agree on your point that Black Myrh Wukong is already in the handicapped after seeing who are in jury and that is 90% of the weight of the selection. It is odd the jury was pulled out of the site, and most are legacy media. My suggestion for voting 45% legacy gaming media 45% independent gaming media 10% audience.
I don't even bother watching his show as it almost never aligns with the games I would've chosen. That and the ads and other fluff in his show has become so bloated. The only reason to watch would be for any game announcements which I can catch later via highlights or trailers released post show.

Agree - Reviewers do not update their score either even if major launch bugs are corrected later. BMW should get nominated because they fixed the launch bugs but reviewers do not need to bother updating their scores? Pretty sure between the lines, this is what Destin doesn't want to say because IGN does not update scores.
And rightfully so. The VGAs have always been a horrible embarrassment to the industry. The recent changes only solidify this to everyone else who didn't already know it.
I don't even watch this event.
I just wait until all the videos are released afterwards
Why Shadow of the Erdtree can get nominated for Game of the Year and Phantom Liberty or Blood and Wine couldn't? Is it Fromsoftware glazing?
They really want Astro Bot to win something. its in a lot of categories a bit fishy.
Sony always has to win. Geoff loves them. He literally has Playstation shoes.
@@Joseph-wh5of yeah cause spiderman 2 won everything last year right? I mean if Sony is suppose to win why didn't Spiderman 2 win anything.
@TheChris1369 Ehh.... It was literally nominated on almost every single category and was even part of the nominees for the game of the year contender. What are you talking about?
@Joseph-wh5of can you not read or something lol I said astro not is in a lot of categories smh
They pulled how the voting is going because gamers do not have anything in common with game “journalists” anymore and they are the ones picking the winners. It’s a complete joke and sham and they have destroyed any credibility they had left and it wasn’t much to begin with.
black myth wukong is goty.
I have too much self respect to watch Geoff's sham. I'll wait till after on TH-cam for the reveals when someone does a round up of every premier
I had no idea South Africa had a gaming website.
He should trade mark The Game Advertisements instead as that is what the show is
Just imagine that The Oscars is trademarked as The Film Awards™.
That's just how ludicrous Geoff Keighley's proposal is.
More leeway for companies to be lazy and unoriginal.
Everyone knows we're watching game awards for new game trailers, not for the awards themselves. If they wanted legitimite awards by jury, people from all around the world not just the Anglosphere.
Politics is in movies, sports and now in video games?!? 😭
This show is a joke. I just tune in for the reveals at this point.
Technically speaking games should be nominated by and voted for by the gamers and not a group of journalist jurors. Technology exists, design could and development can be done to help eliminate use of bots - this is the biggest issue. Why limit it to a curated list of jurors? Especially if those jurors are not transparent. After a recent game release where the publisher/studio were clearly identified as selecting only curated journalists to write their reviews (positive) there is next to no trust in those jurors.
If you let gamers vote then shit like stellar blade and ZZZ would win awards
@@Axlnator so you're saying that because you don't like a game the rest of the world doesn't get a say on what games should be GotY? I never played Steller Blade but friends did and enjoyed it. I loved Black Myth Wukong. So again define what GotY is? Isn't it a game that the entire world of gamers gets to have a say on separate from whether someone likes it or not? Are you saying then too that the Jurors are selective and won't vote on Stellar Blade or the like for one reason or another?
If you let games vote then only high selling games win.
Most "gamers" play like 2 games a year.
Your idea is bad lol
@@GMDGeek Im saying review sites and professional game reviewer's put more thought into their reviews due to them having a salary they depend on and standards they have to abide by. User gamer reviews are alot of the time dictated by overblown hate bandwagons, they are not trying to be objective with game scores they are trying to send a message positive or negative, thats why you see so many 10s and 1s. Also popularity does not equal quality, alot of the most sold games are generic slop, the oscars aren't given to marvel movies.
@@scarecrow2621 Then possibly just possibly those journalist focus on writing better articles, playing more streams, showing more games but how do you call a game "game of the year" if only a handful of people played it. I'm not saying abandon those games as there are a lot of smaller games that don't get a lot of views that are really pretty good so maybe better categories. But based on your saying right now all saw sales and not something obscure - FF VII Rebirth, Dragon's Dogma 2, Helldivers 2, Astro Bot, Black Myth, Erdtree, Stellar Blade, and a few others depending on which site you go to... all of those games saw sales. So explain your statement again that only high selling games win" if that's pretty much how its unfolding with the current system.
For some reason I never find myself mad or even close to Furious about anything on any of these gaming debacles ever. maybe I'm not a big enough nerd
10% fan vote is pretty ridiculous.
Keighly and The Game Awards have always been a joke. We only watched for trailers and we can see those minutes after they show thanks to the internet.
The fact anyone takes TGA seriously is ridiculous.
Helldivers II not even being a NOMINATION is borderline mentally handicapped behavior. Not even a nomination? Ridiculous.
That Astrobot, on "Rockstar" Playstation 5 is anywhere near a nomination is a statement on how far the gaming industry has fallen creatively 😂
SkillUp did review Dragon Age without mentioning that he hated the previous ones
He also complained about not being able to hide behind cover in Anthem.
(No, I'll never let that one go lol)
DLC in that slot was not what I was expecting this year
Maybe leave it to select people who run thier own business. Like Angry Joe, LTT, The Completionist. However they need to be very transparent and thus won't need to worry about being harassed.
We're mad at the Game Awards because the Game Awards is corporate-focused trash that's mostly about pushing woke nonsense. Watch the Real Game Awards instead. StutteringCraig, the dude who used to run Screw Attack, is starting them this year. By gamers, for gamers.
If they allowed DLCs. What happen to Phantom Liberty? These game awards really are messed up
Geoff Keighley not doing anything with all these MADNESS is the reason i believe he is not the one running the Game Awards Event every year.
It’s an advert. The games in the nominations tend to be from big companies that pay for advertising slots on the game awards. Voted for by people who are looking to keep their goodwill for early access to these games. It may be completely fair and unbiased, but it certainly doesn’t look like it to the general game fan.
The Angry Joe Show should definitely be included as a voice in any video game discussion, especially The Game Awards 💯🤘
The chapter end cutscenes for Wukong deserve an award on their own. The story with the fox 😭. Absolute cinema.
Astrobot is a goty contender. That alone shows how much of a joke the awards show is. Astrobot is a straight Nintendo clone. Sony has absolutely no originality. They have one single game up there everything else is third party. Everyone else like Nintendo and xbox have multiple games nominations.
Sony would rather pay for a goty award than actually make real sony games. It's comical.
Truly though, its not like any of us care about this awards show. Its a joke. Astrobot isnt goty worthy at all IN MY OPINION. Next year sony isnt gonna have anything to even nominate probably.
Even Astrobot sold like shite so how its a goty contender beats me. Ohh yea...sony payed with that bag.
the game award panel is a joke. they might as well just ask Sweet Baby Inc and Black Girl Gamer as judge
Last Stand Media should be on the nomination committee.
If you need the base game to play it, it doesn't deserve a GOTY nomination. DLCs, remakes, and remasters need their own category.
Geoff Keighley aware he'll receive 100% backlash despite whatever he claims with his "the counsel for which I'm not a part of it"
Sure Keighley, tell whatever you want.
No Warhammer, no Silent Hill 2, no Hellblade II? What a joke
2:26 you're damn right. Their official Twitter handle uploaded the nominees at 10:41 pm IST
This give a very bad image. So the year when Metroid Prime remastered came out and everyone gave it great reviews it wasn't allowed in the GOTY category but now it's suddenly ok because reasons nobody knows. It looks bad, like money got thrown somewhere to include it.
Until the customers voice is equal to the insiders this will always be the case. Transparency is always a winning strategy.
Please wrap it up its time for more ads.
If Wukong: Black myth didn't win it will will be a confirmation that the system is rigged.
It won't. I bet it will be Astro bot. They love Sony.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Concord gets nominated. Jeff is a Pony
Jeff has a virtual monopoly on video games awards so he thinks he can get away with anything. And for the most part he can.
Well, they gave Veilguard high scores, and didn’t nominate it. So we know they probably shilled for the review code.
Big W for Geoff and Game Awards for giving so many nominations to Wukong in which the whole industry was against it including Game of the year and DA Veilguard with 0 nominations after all the industry glazing it.
The “What Ziff Davis Inc wants people to think Awards”
All media awards are rendered meaningless by the purveyors
It was redone to make sure Sony gets more nominations and wins every category
suuuurrreeee. The inclusion of remakes and remasters for GOTY has been a thing for years now. The only thing that changed was making everything eligible in all categories. If anything this was to help shadow of the erdtree get nominated for GOTY.
Calm down astro bot is a damn better game than everything else released this year
Bingo
Perhaps the Xbox tax was an under estimation. It's Sony favoritism. Nintendo and PC are also ignored. Especially PC with indie games.
Absolute bullshit, Sony produces games that are cinematic which automatically targets a way wider audience than some niche games, thats why they get so many votes. My aunt recently started playing some of Sonys exclusives this says a lot
The Game Awards is just an advertising platform with token awards in the mix.
I haven't watched the last couple of awards shows. It's gone away from what it should be for and that's the devs who make great games.
DLC and Expansions have no place in the GOTY category. That type of stuff should have their own category like Ongoing or something.
Shame on the ppl who pick the nominees dlcs shouldn't be in it especially with as many good games as we got this year.
We all know they are picking Concord because it’s “for the modern audience”.
The audience vote needs to at least be 50% of the weight. Maybe closer to 80%
How is NCAAF 25 not on on the sports list? Biggest sports game last summer.
If they make a Remakes/Expansions category they could easily fit 5 or 6 games into it. But it's not always certain per year.
This "Awards" are utter garbage lol I hope they go away.
