- This week, Gareth Potts joins Stephen for a frame and a chat in Newcastle under Lyme. We chat about the big differences between pool vs snooker, whether cue sports should be in the Olympics and what it's like to play with Gareth's brother in law, Mark Selby! We think you're going to enjoy this one so leave a comment if you do. Also keep an eye out for the reverse fixture of this video in a few weeks, where Stephen takes Gareth on at pool!

"They hired the best two players from English pool, the best two players from American pool.... and you and Ken Doherty" 🤣🤣
Lol ex world champs tho
Ken Doherty was still competitive on the snooker tour in 2013, and Hendry had only recently retired. Both former World Champions and hugely sucessful players. At one point around thd year 2000 Ken Doherty was provisionally ranked world number one. Hendry is one of the greatest Snooker players in the history of the game. Many of his peers were slightly suprised he retired when he did as although he was no longer the player he was, he was still playing at a very high level.
😂😂
I think this might be my favourite episode so far. Gareth comes across as an extremely knowledgeable and highly skilled cue sports bloke. 👍🏻
Great video, Stephen. Gareth is a fabulous cue-sports player. I was impressed with his long pot ability on a snooker table. No wonder he hardly ever misses on pool tables!
Has won events in pool? 🤔
@@charlottemcnair1881 What?
@@wayneanthonyholmes4437 I mean, it's a strange question to ask. He is one of the most accomplished pool players to ever play the game.. English pool, Chinese, etc. One google search will tell you the many tournaments he has won
@@Guvnor-bu6xm How bizarre!
@@BiggyJimbo
@Guvnor aka Wayne Anthony Holmes is a 59YO from Blackpool
Honestly believe I've destroyed his mental health! He deserves it! He clones everyone's accounts on World Snooker! The guy is a coward!!!
You know who'd make a great interviewee that I've just thought of? The Sheriff, Anthony Hamilton! I mean yeah, you'd lose the frame, that goes without saying, he's still insanely good even though he says he can't see properly...but that's one of the reasons I say he'd be great on the channel. He's had such a long career, such a good career (despite underachieving), his views on most issues make a lot of sense, and he seems a really intelligent person. Great character too. Anyway, thanks for this one Stephen and Gareth, fascinating to get an insight into the pool/Chinese pool world!
Count Hamilton would be a great guest. Such an intelligent and interesting bloke. Stephen get the grand master Hamilton on please.
Agree the Anthony Hamilton would be a great guest, but he's not an absolutely certainty to win the frame - Hendry is still very capable and you've made Hamilton sound like he never misses 😆
Haha Hendry smile at the end when he won - he loves it
Would be nice to see a follow up video with this bloke with them playing pool. I know its a snooker channel but if you have a pool player on then lets see them in their natural habitat! Would be good to get a breakdown of some "patterns" just to see how they look at the table differently etc...
Gareth is such a good player, i remember when i first started playing snooker about 5 years ago i came across his 'pool school' videos on youtube and his tips and advice on how to stand, how to cue etc made an instant difference to my game
A true legend. Love Gareth Potts. Top bloke as well.
Now you really need to do one with Mark Selby, that would be awesome!
Another top quality episode. Gareth is a class cueist and great ambassador for all cue sports. Thanks for sharing Stephen 👍
Get Mark Selby on your channel Stephen!!!
He may not be everyone’s favourite player but deffo agree he should be on the channel…he’s actually quite funny, you lot calling him boring that’s your opinion but when you’ve actually played a frame or met him then your opinion will change, met him in Leicester 2016 and truly an all round nice bloke…played a frame with him and he’s certainly a character hence the jester nickname
@@Luke_-_the jester from Leicester should be bore you to tears from Leicestershire
@@scottlilley8491 what? Fck sakes at least make it make sense
And Higgins
J Higgins, J White 👍🏽
What a gent Gareth is. Watched a lot of his videos but never heard him talk, really eloquent love when they get deep into detail about stuff on this channel! ❤
Another amazing episode, I could listen to these two talk all day... Keep up the fantastic work. It keeps the game alive outside the competitions and gives people a real insight into the lives of cue sport players. Love it, and thank you!
Really enjoyed that chat, especially about the differences across the different cue sports
Loved watching this I lived just around the corner from what used to be the Winchester pub and remember Gareth growing up...obviously we know how good he is now...but its amazing to see where he's gone with it and great insight to the game of pool...brilliant
Would be interesting to see you get an American Pool player on. Jayson Shaw would be a great guest
Yes he would. Make it happen Hendo!
Top top top uk pool player too
Two absolute masters. Lovely to hear the respect from Pottsy referring back to Hendry’s practice ethos and standards. Hendo changed the game. He practiced like the best sportsmen in other sports.
Great episode and eas great seeing Selby play 8 ball recently and making the final. He is still an outstanding 8 ball player.
Great video and one of the best so far. Well done. Gareth has deep knowledge of the different cue sports and is brilliant to talk.
I’ve been waiting all week for this
I'm loving all of your videos Stephen and learning something from all of them. Great channel !
Excellent as always Stephen.
This was fascinating, absolutely loved it
Thanks for that, another very interesting, informative and enjoyable watch, great channel getting better and better ☺️👌
This guy's parents own the pub they all go to in Shaun of the Dead!!
Great video, and love hearing Gareth talk about the differences between snooker and pool.
Been waiting for this one. Great vid
Gareth Potts is awesome. Watched him last year at Chinese masters and he didn’t leave the table for about an hour or something!,,,
Super video probably the most interesting discussions and content with such a big crossover!
Top guy excellent video, nice change of pace and learning about pool on the back of it. 👏
Yes really enjoyed watching this one 👍🏻keep up the grind Stephen your the man bro
Good memories together in China guys! And great conversation here.
My favourite episode! Quality chat and Gareth seems like a stand up character. Great stuff!
Selby is underrated by fans. Some like to moan about his style but his achievements back up what he does. Top 5 of all time IMO. Legend
Whats this got to do with Selby???
@@shaycooper3620 Maybe the fact that they were talking about him for like three minutes?
Agreed defo in the top 5 goat list bro , yes There’s players I’d prefer to watch over Selby but I don’t mind watching Selby though neither Tbf his all round game is fantastic and specially his tactical/Safety game is absolutely phenomenal real granite !! And a decent bloke to boot I feel like most of the stick he gets is to do with Ronnie who hear him talk about mark and jump on the bandwagon and sometimes go a little overboard with it there’s banter then there’s bullying!…….My top 5 of all time Would be Ronnie,Hendry, Nugget (Davis), John Higgins,Selby
Selby is one of the greatest player ever, i love him, i love his tactic and game❤
@@danielb5549no doubt. Even if he is technically one of the best he does nothing positive for the game. He's the snooker equivalent of ChelseaFC. Sure, anti-game gets results, but you mock the sport
Superb episode. My favourite so far! 👍
What a brilliant conversation. Loved that. Nice one Gareth 👍🏻
I LOVED THIS EPISODE!!!
Admittedly never heard of Potts but still a solid chat with Hendry. I know it's a frame of snooker but was anyone else disappointed that they didnt have a game of pool? Hopefully there's a bonus video coming up!
Another great episode , love hearing about all the different cue sports! Gareth is a beast
Massive be cue nerd which is great
Great video, been watching Gareth for a few years since I stumbled across the 8 ball coaching videos, then watched a few matches, brilliant all round player, which as we know is hard to mix cue sports.
So happy to see some sort of clips of Gareth playing snooker. Always wondered what he looks like playing and tbh I think he will make the last 16s in a lot of the major tournaments tbh. Especially with marks guidance if he ever went that route. But I guess better money in Chinese 8ball might as well stay there. I would xD
Such an interesting perspective from Gareth, I've enjoyed this interview
Garreth is so right when you play snooker and then play pool after it helps so much. My shot and stroke in pool are so much better now.
just seeing his break and the first shot on the red- im impressed!
Stephan your content is brilliant and well done to your editor. ) Road to 500k.
Might be the best one yet. Brilliant stuff
I was brought up in pubs playing English 8 ball and it got me interested in snooker. My respect for pool players has risen after watching this. Was good to hear about the technical side too! Gareth seems like a decent bloke.
Another great video keep em coming
great chat and guest as always mr hendry!
As always enjoyed it Cheers
Ive been waiting to see this! Been quite enjoying the pool scene online. Snooker is my love though.
Great video as always
Enjoyed it, thank you.
Steve has some incredible guests on his channel . Have enjoyed all of them so far . Just waiting for earl Strickland to appear and see what he thinks about snooker 😂
The angriest player to ever pick up a cue 😂
@@t.revspanner8756 Earl has definitely had some memorable moments. To his credit, though, he sometimes shows real class, too, and there's no questioning the fact that he can still make shots that many other players find difficult.
What a great name for a pool (or snooker) player !
Love this channel Stephen and for me this is the best video yet. Great chat between two great players in their respective sports. Keep it up!
Yet another great video!
Nice one guys Gareth comes across as a very nice and modest person, got a nice cue action on the bigger table, what a guy his bro in law is, never gives him a single point hope he whips his 🫏 at pool 😇super post Stephen
Thank you for all your great videos Stephen! Marvellous content!
Comment on 8:50 "English 8 ball is the only cue sport in the world where the balls are different sizes":
Most 8 ball in Brazil is played with a cue ball larger than the object balls, which brings a completely different dynamic to the game. The reason for that is the system for retrieving the cue ball on coin-operated tables.
That was superb. Brilliant
well done as always stephen
Best video yet 👏
Love the series
Fascinating!
That was a good frame love the videos
Cool video Stephen keep cool thing on cue tips all the best
2 legends perfect love it
Nice this, Gareth seems a great bloke, looks after himself physically so should have years in pool
Thanks Stephen! My wish come true! 😊
A lovely watch this 😊
As a pool.player who follows snooker. Really enjoyed that one 😊
waiting for mark selby's game and his insights, as well as tough table challenge.....
Used to walk past that snooker club in 'Castle a lot back in the day when I live there. A lot of redevelopment going on in that area of the town, so there may not be much else left from my childhood in a few years.
Stephen, thank you so much for your videos! Any chance of getting John Virgo on Cue Tips? I've got this episode lined up for some afternoon viewing (I'm in California). Being out in the states, I play a lot of pool as it's hard to find a snooker table, and have really begun to appreciate watching 9 ball and the big 9 foot tables out here. Always want to see pool players on a snooker table, so can't wait for this. Best channel on the internet mate.
If you’re here in LA, there is at least one pool hall in Glendale with snooker tables.
JV would be excellent
Is there any question Virgo is a better commentator than he was a player? Stephen is one of the best commentators - no mean feat - and I’d love to hear them talk about that craft/art.
Can't believe missed a chance to see Stephen in my home town
Best name ever for a pool player
Great lads Gareth & Stephen
This was a good one
Seems like a top man this Potts lad. Good on him.
Fabulous video. Absolutely love this channel. And what a comically terrible shot from Stephen at 3:29. All adds to the entertainment 🙂
Absolute legend in the game !
Love this cue tips❤
great chat great video nice one
I remember him presenting me a trophy at the National under 16s pool tournament up in stoke, must have been a good 20 years ago now. I was wearing a frog waistcoat! 😂 Top top man
Stephen, I think barry hern to have a word because this guy can play. I think it be nice to see him play in the shoot out as you said in the video.
I've never seen anyone bend a stick like he did on that intro break shot, I had to go back and look again.
I am sure that it happens a lot but was just well captured here in slow motion and probably goes some way to explaining why break cues became a thing.
Was crazy. Don't know what they make cues from but I'd guess that those ones are made of ash (cause it can seriously bend)
in American pool it's a normal thing since many years, maybe in UK pool it was (and is) relatively uncommon
Hope you get to play pool with him 👍
Not a pool watcher and I’ve never heard of this guy but this was really interesting
Great conversation. Gareth Potts is a huge motivation to millions of players worldwide. Trust me, he's well capable of being a top 16 Snooker player, but his specialty is in the patterns of 8-ball. He's also an incredibly accurate potter when the pressure is on.
If he was capable of being a top 16 snooker player then that's what he would be!
He plays pool for a reason.
@@Mydadisbiggerthanyourdadhe’s barely a top 5 pool player. The competition for snooker is much, much more difficult
@lewiswebber5974
And how can you even begin to make such a claim? Where is the empirical evidence for it? Even with top 32 levels of talent you would still be pursuing snooker with a ravenous appetite. There is nothing that he has done that could lead you to be so confident in your assertion.
@@truthsayerq7264 Ask Selby if he could have made top 16 in snooker. I watch all Sports. Potts played with Appleton, Melling, Selby, and was probably the best. He chose another part, and is a legend in China after never having played on their tables. Hendry and many others went there and looked like donkeys. Including all US, Taiwan and Phillipino players. He set the standard in a sport the best Snooker players struggle with and almost never win against top 20 in China. There's empirical evidence and I actually ran tournaments in China. You're just a wanker.
@@Mydadisbiggerthanyourdad Sorry to blow your candle out. I have seen many players who have had an excellent amateur pedigree but failed to deliver when they turn pro. There is simply no guarantee to be a top 32 player.
There was no way Hendry was gonna let pool player have him lol his still got that fight! Top vid Potts is class act and got talent !!
Stephen you’re some man for talking to your guests when they have a frame winning ball to take 😂 surprised nobody has called you out on that
Great lad! You should have played a frame of english pool with him as well!
Class !
It's one of the best episodes ❤
2 legends in one frame.
Excellent
holy smokes, I know Gareth can play some snooker but never knew he can make a 145! impressive!
17:50 Earl Strickland. Now there's a guest Stephen needs to get on.
Would be amazing to get Earl on but at his age now I don’t think he’d be potting many balls on this table. Would love it if he came on the show, though!
Strickland doesn't deserve any attention, he's a terrible person.
@@gfdggdfgdgf not really, in a chill situation like this he would be very funny and interesting. Obviously he has a giant ego...
@@gfdggdfgdgf 'Terrible' is a bit much. The worst he's ever done is mouthed off during matches. He's never actually hurt anyone. At most he's a shitty sportsman and a bit of a dick. Hendry has arguably already had someone much more morally dubious than Strickland on the show already in John Terry.
Strickland is a cue sport legend love him or hate him.
I used to play in the Stockport pool world rules and Stockport rules and had Gareth at our Presentation night in 2014 (i think) ...some of the players in that league are incredible. Phil and Rob Clarke, Neil the Washer Robinson, Doyle bros, Aaron & Ryan Davies, The Legend The Predator to name just a few. I remember Phil Clarke playing snooker for the first time and hitting a 35 break half pissed! Fkn great times at Replay & The Crucible with another manchester legend my very good friend Big H (Horace Harvey) RIP dude .. GBNF. ♥ 🙏
What about Gareth Hibbott? Pretty sure he's from around there
@@StewartBarnespool888 not sure bud, can't say I've heard of him tbh.
Great vid, you should do a video where it’s a 1 vs 1 but the opponent starts on the tough table challenge then once they miss it continues as a normal match
Great vid. How about a rematch of say best of 5 in Chinese pool?
Great charisma and humour
