  • Adam takes on a fun prop project using one of his old go-to materials for builds: large sheets of insulation foam! This carvable, sandable, and paintable material is great for creating all sorts of large volume props, like the replica of a vintage cast-iron safe Adam is building today!

    back when i was in college at an art school, the pink foam was much beloved for many things. at the time there also happened to be a couple new buildings going up downtown nearby that had gigantic sheets of that pink foam and its blue cousin leaning against the fences and scattered around the building sites in smaller chunks. being very broke art students who needed their meager funds for more important things like not starving to death, a lot of us wound up lurking around the construction sites dumpsters and scrap piles for anything they'd give us to use as supplies, and a few of them were actually pretty cool about it. one day someone managed to score a full sheet of the gigantic pink foam cracked diagonally from a build site, he carried that thing over his head like the king of town all the way back to the dorms and built a shrine to it for a while until it finally became part of several projects.
    pink foam is magnificent and versatile, and i kinda miss working with it.

It would of been interesting to see the safe finished off in that paint.

      @theexchipmunk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, love the effect. You paint it with the stuff and BOOM, 200 kilogram heavier. xD But to be serious, yeah, thats probably one of the things that people connect really closely to VERY heavy, as its often used on very massive and heavy machines.

      Also getting the chipped effect on "laquered" paints sells a piece as actually being old. Masking with latex, spray painting and then pulling the latex away gives some solid, realistic wear and tear chipping effects, instead of even gradients that tends to just look spray painted/dry brushed on.

    That foam saved my life every night for a whole summer. I played Truffaldino in a production of "One Servant, Two Masters" and in the finale I jumped off stage, supposedly landing in a Venetian canal, but in reality on a specially built stunt crash mat, and the base was made by that exact, large sheet of foam Adam mentions in the beginning.

      Build it a little thicker, make the door a little more exact, and put small, evenly spaced holes in the shelf for air flow, and it would work great for that. Put the ice on the bottom shelf, and your food or drinks on the top shelf, and it would be a cool "conversation piece" at a cook-out or the beach. I'd also ponder making it larger, and work out how to drain it when all that ice melts, but yeah, this gives me ideas.
      Another cool little feature one could add is, instead of a dial and crank-style handle, make a "u"-shaped grab handle on the front, and add a hasp for a padlock. Form and function, for they who control the drinks control the party!

      As long you have the right "rituals" and work alone it works out.
      The trick is to stand and lean always so it is physical impossible to get hurt.
      If you work not alone though that is indeed a bad idea.
      The tricky part with such tools is to learn all that without loosing parts of your body, because it is all about experience.
      The major tricky part is that you keep people with less expertience do the same (as i learned while using an anglegrinder without protections due to limited space and the person imitating me not aware just how temperamental they become if you go out of alignment with the cut...)
