    Not only is this the best chicken coop video I've seen, it's also the best advice for chickens. Kudos to you for excellent content!

    You all did a terrific job. One change you might want to make. On your main door to your building where you have a latch, you might want to put on a latch that you can lock because eventually raccoons will climb up that door and unlatch it because there's nothing holding it down other than you just put it inside the hole and then they would walk right in and have themselves a meal. They are very smart animals and learn real quick how to get in so you must do everything you can to stop it.

    I was looking at chicken coops on the internet and yours is the best one including those expensive and fancy ones. This reminds me of the old cicen coops you would see when I was growing up in Arkansas. No one whent out and bought a cicken coop they usaly built it from slats (with the bark still on one side) perchased from a local saw mill or just used some shed they already had ours was a hundred year old converted log smokehouse.

    Nicely done...great if you have the space for a chicken resort like this one...

  • @John_Malloy
    @John_Malloy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here are some improvements you can easily do if you haven't done them already because, IMO, you need more space and ventilation. Store your "supplies" somewhere else and give that space to the chickens. Take those double doors, cut them open, and screen them permanently with hardware cloth. You could attach a short awning or overhang there if you like. Then line up the roosts on the far end away from the open door by attaching 2x4's (wide end facing up), or 4x4's, across the width of the coop about 3 feet up (dropping board optional). Then close off the open vents around the roosts in cold weather but keep the front wide open.

    • @kellyemb12
      @kellyemb12 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A GREENER LIFE we bought the wire at Home Depot or Ace Hardware. If you predator proof your run by extending the wire mesh at least 2 feet below the ground or use concrete blocks, you don’t need to have a door for your chickens on the coop. I hope this helps.

    • @kellyemb12
      @kellyemb12 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      More than I should have spent probably and it depends on how handy you are. I wanted something that looked pretty on the property as well. You don't have to spend as much as I did.The Everton Shed was on sale at Costco for $900 something at the time but my husband and his friend built it. I paid for a roofer and a carpenter to finish it.

      Sorry I just sent someone else your reply. I said it rains so little here, but that's a good idea!

    • @AztecWarrior69
      @AztecWarrior69 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kelly Emberg Well a larger tank will hold more so that in between rains. There are a lot of advantages to having a system like that. The best advantage is that you don't have to fill it or clean it everyday. Also in hot weather you don't have to set out extra water. Just make sure the pipeline isn't in direct sunlight. Also if and when you have to go out of town, the tank can be filled and that will give your chicken sitter one less thing to worry about, one less thing for YOU to worry about.
      One last thing that you may never need to worry about. City water system emergencies. Here in the past few years have had several time where the city issued an either boil the water or just don't drink warnings. Well when that happened I was so glad that at least I didn't have to worry about my chickens getting water. Especially when the the do not drink or bathe at all, warnings came out. Stores were running out of water fast and truck loads of bottled water were being passed out. So with such little water the chickens and people's pets were a big deal.
      So a tank with a nipple pipeline is a great thing. Add rainwater harvesting to the mix and you are set.
      P.S. I forgot to tell you how much I like your video. Not only the subject and how great the chicken palace came out but also the editing, video production and not least your great voice and narration skills.
      TY for posting.

    A fantastic coop, however an important point is.... ROOSTS must not be as round like yours!!!!- round roosts damage hens keel bone, their breast bone! The bone gets dented over time, creating hairline fractures, that then break. The whole process is painful and the ensuing death is agonising for the chicken.
    Alway choose a flat surfaced bit of wood for your roost wood, and either seal it with paint or oil it so it cant breed lice and feather mite eggs, like raw wood can! Choose a piece of wood that is no wider on top than a hen can grip, which is an average of two inches. So for each safe roosting perch you need 2 inch wide by 2 inch high(or 4 or 6 whichever you prefer), by whatever length required!
    Small note- If i were you I would clear laquer or paint inside your coop too, if it is raw wood like it seems, again, this is an issue most often forgotten by all but professional poultry experts, and we do it to minimise disease and parasite risk. Lino is awesome by the way, fantastic idea and first ive seen it, and i will be promoting it! Still seal the floor underneath though. You want to disease proof everththing you can, so anything not on a chicken, dies. That way when the inevitable wind bourne parasite comes in for a landing in your garden, you only need to bath the birds in disinfectant, and do a basic coop clean to neutralise the problem, not have to tear it all apart topaint poison on all the bare wood. THAT is why folk get recurring infestations, from the 5 types of feather mites, to lice, to dust mites or red spider mites, to scaly leg disease, the list goes on!! Check under your hens feathers and on the skin, by hackle base (bottom of of back of neck) and all the way around the vent (bottom) looking for any movement and any scummy grey looking miniature teeny tiny bubbles at the base of each feather. Good chicken people always check chicken bottoms in the sunshine or bright light, very regularly! It is the best parasite check you can do for their health, and of course treating its infestation will improve any hens egg laying 😀😀😀 Again, a beautiful set up, for more fun add a few perch roost SWINGS at different heights and locations in the yard, ones you can move, and the hens will excercise more muscles in jumping from one swing to another, and keep themselves fit and amused for hours... and once they master a set up, just change it around!
