I went on my very first shell tour at low tide late morning early afternoon at Kice Island and Dickmans Island July 2024. I was very happy on what I found/collected on both islands. The number of shells to choose from was overwhelming. I found one alphabet cone, on the beat up side but kept it being my first one. I would love to find little alphabet cones. I found one or two Florida cones. I loved all the alphabet cones you found. I wish the tour was longer so I could have covered more ground. So much walking it pooped me out. I found many of what you found but much smaller quantity. I plan to return next year on a longer tour. Plan to go to Fernandina Beach sometime this month for shark tooth, shelling and hubby to metal detect for sunken spanish rials which is closer to my home in SE Georgia. I love your videos and I have learned so much from you. I am addicted. Thank you for helping me find my newfound hobby.

at 18:45 those are bryozoa, also known as moss animals. They grow on rough surfaces, mostly when the animal is dead and gone, or e.g. on the dorsum of large shells. At 27:45 a very nice shell indeed. Nice colour and gloss.

Hi Sharmon! Thank you for sharing your shell exploration on Kice. What a haul! Those shells are so spectacular. Upon looking at all of them on the board, the one that really stuck out to me was that stunning calico scallop that has the hot pink apex! What a find!. Of course I thought the lavender ones were incredible too. I also loved the patterns and colors on those gaudy nauticas. Especially the ones with some purple on them. The cones were amazing too and all the others. The video really put me in a mood to go shelling (when am I not?) and finally, my husband and I get to go to the beach where I find amazing cockles of different colors and very large clam shells for my decoupage hobby. We're also going to visit a beach where it is rumored that there are large moon shells. We get to go next weekend and I'm excited. We don't get to go often with the beach being 3 and a half hours away. Thanks for the inspiration, and have a great week.

Wow! What an incredible haul of the most beautiful shells! We were on Kice two weeks ago and didn't find much of anything in three hours. I was a bit disappointed-We had looked so forward to the trip for almost a year. Then seeing your incredible collection! But reading the many posts here of those who are landlocked (like us) who have never had the chance to shell, it made me feel very grateful that we were able to enjoy the minimal shelling and the beauty of Kice. Thank you, as always, for your wonderful beach and shelling trips!

Practice helps, but this particular trip was after a few days of winds, so it was unnaturally fantastic shelling. Plus if you visited Kice in the summer it might have been slimmer pickings as the shells build up over the winter and hide over the summer. Loved this two part shelling excursion - thank you. What a magnificent cone haul. And I love that hinged egg cockle! Regarding the colorful moon snail: that solid color variation (solid yellowish, often with a pale stripe) found in that area of SW Florida was actually given a different species name: Naticarius verae. I am not sure if this has been widely accepted in the scientific community, but the idea that it is a different species of moon snail has been kicking around for decades. Also, the lacy web sometimes found on shells is an encrusting bryozoan.

Well that just sent me down a very interesting rabbit hole. Holy cow the information on shells out there is DRY. No wonder it's so hard to research. I also found Naticarius canrena verae, so I'm going to continue to see what "they" say about it. Thank you for the little ID nudge!

Great shelling day, indeed!!! Wowsa! When I went to Kice, I didn’t make it very far at all. 😂Ali kept calling or texting me to check on me because she thought something was wrong, or that my ankle (I had to have surgery a few years ago to repair a vertically split tendon and I had mentioned that it could slow me down a little) was making it too hard to walk through all the sticks and stumps and crazy terrain. I was just finding so darn much that I couldn’t make myself walk away. 😂 I found an entire handful of minis just right around where we parked the kayak. Kice is like a candy store for shells! ❤️ Honestly, it doesn’t matter how much land you cover if you’re enjoying yourself and happy with what you’re finding. I sat watching the waves for a few minutes while I hydrated and cooled off a little bit and I was even finding shells right next to me while I was “taking a break” . 😆 Those tiny little Alphabet cones are just adorable! I have several cones that are so small that I can’t even tell what species they are, but those little ones you found are really cute because you can see the pattern so perfectly just like the big ones. They are just so sweet!!! And those Trues might be few, but they are making up for that in quality! Just gorgeous!!!

I joined you in heaven on earth for this 2 part video! Sharmon. I love your videos so much! I love how you still feel the awe of a beautiful shell, even when you have seen hundreds of the same shell before. I feel the same way. The shells just totally amaze me. I don't understand how they can be so incredibly beautiful and different when made by these beings we think of as being so simple compared to us. We really have no comprehension of their world. But we are so blessed to find their beautiful homes when they are finished with them. I am so thankful that you totally get it and share that awe with us every week. Thank you so much for being you. You make the world world a better place by helping us all appreciate it's wonder. ❤

What a kind thing to say Janet! You and I have been traveling these beaches together for a while and you are right. I literally feel the joy with each special seashell I get to hold in my hand. I don't know if its because I didn't grow up here, so this is still kind of "new" to me - or whether I can stop every single time I go to the beach and breathe in the pure joy of where I am, and exhale gratitude that I get to do what I do. I'm not sure but I hope this feeling never ends. I'm living my best life and I'm so lucky I get to share it with people like you who get it! ❤️🐚🌴🌊

@@SWFBeachLife I didn't get to the beach until about 20 years ago. For mr, the wonder never ceases. When you hold up a shell I will often comment as if I'm there "oh, isn't that beautiful" so I imagine it will be the same for you. I have a question, perhaps for the Naturalist course. When the carrier shells and seek out shells, rocks etc. to glue to their shells for camouflage, is this an intelligent action? There's a lot involved in doing this. Surely not just programed genetics. I am very curious. Thanks

@@janetknight9978 I’m so sorry I don’t know! Urchins will decorate themselves for camouflage and barnacles must glue themselves to something to filter feed but I’m not sure about the carrier shells. I know they exist I just haven’t found one myself. Yet. 😏

I found my first baby frog at the beach when i was 4. Begged my parents to let me keep it they said no much to my disappointment and not understanding. I hid it in my pocket anyway only to find it dead when I got home. I was so heartbroken almost unconsolable my first brush with life and death. Never again was I so carefree. I'm still obsessed with frogs and I love how you save earths little critters!

I found an itty bitty frog when I was a kid and my younger cousin accidentally killed it. Same feeling of being crushed inside. I have a frog that lives in this spider remover brush I leave outside leaning against my house. I like going out and saying hi to it without having to take care of it 😂
