He diagnosed it as something that exists only because people lack a better alternative. Today, we have these better alternatives: Science, solidarity & social security. In Scandinavia, where these concepts are well-established, there are the highest numbers of atheists in the world. This proves Marx was correct. Religion isn't actually necessary for anything.
