  • Gopal Bedi, popularly known by his screen name Ranjeet, has worked in over 200 films. He embarked on his journey in 1970 and carved a niche for himself as a versatile character actor, excelling in villainous roles. Some of his notable performances include appearances in films such as 'Sharmeelee', 'Bandhe Haath', and 'Namak Halal'. He continues to leave his mark, as evidenced by his roles in 'Behen Hogi Teri', 'Housefull 2', and 'Housefull 4'.
In the Mumbai Edition of the ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, Ranjeet talks about his journey into Bollywood without having a godfather. He shares insights into the changes that have occurred in Bollywood over the last 50 years, noting a lack of camaraderie among actors. Without mincing words, he shares the insider secrets of Bollywood late-night parties in the 70s and 80s.
Ranjeet also discusses his experiences working with legends such as Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, and Sunil Dutt. He explains why he opted to portray back-to-back negative characters in movies. Ranjeet reveals that he is a teetotaler and a pure vegetarian, a lifestyle choice starkly contrasting with the roles he portrayed in films.
Ranjeet, one of Bollywood's beloved villains, now enjoys retired life in Juhu. He has significantly reduced his film commitments in the last 5 years, focusing instead on minimal work. However, he remains quite active on Instagram with nearly 2 lakh followers.

He is so entertaining! 🙂Smita ji couldn’t separate the actor from the person and was cringing all through out, goes on to prove how good of an actor he is. In real life he comes across a s a humble person, no pretensions, no weight. You didn’t give him a fair shot. I just realized after watching this interview, how dedicated and talented he is. He doesn’t drink or eat meat but played all those roles so convincingly. Amazing amazing actor and equally better story teller. Smith ji was not fair to him.

Ranjeet tells his story in the most delightful, engrossing manner, despite the meandering length of his narratives. But then, that IS the most natural storytelling way! Smita may not have realized this and tried to cut short / fast forward a few times; finally ending the interview at a point leaving one feeling cheated.
Do get him back for a continuation.

Yes he was middle of his story Nd she ended abruptly..I think she booked her flight too early perhaps she didn't expected a long interview or Ranjit himself was narrating everything at his own that she felt left out as journalist and just end it.

Smita asks the stupidest questions here. When Ranjeet was talking about the lines he came up with such as "chillaogi toh tumhare paas hi awaaz aayegi" and she asks "how can you come up with some cheap dialogues?". He was right that there's nothing cheap in it. Then she proceeds with her stupidity by asking, like a 10 year old "how did any girl become your girlfriend..how could they date you?". Surely as a middle-aged woman, she knows the distinction between reel and real? I've witnessed her superficial listening and understanding in other interviews too but this was really annoying. Btw, I have met Ranjeet in his house and let me tell you he's a gentleman and a complete family man. He's not creepy by miles and miles.

From the interview it is very clear that Ranjeet Ji is a clean soul with nothing to hide. He is not at all lecherous in real life. Also he has never smoked and never touched non veg. In addition, a terrific on screen villain and storyteller, one of the best!
As far as alcohol is concerned, he may have been drinking a bit during his heydays. He mentioned about rum during Air Force days, also some whiskey episodes. But since Smita Ji was hellbent upon proving him a teetotaler and vegetarian, he preferred to keep quiet. Smita Ji was not much interested in the vegetarian aspect of his life since she herself may be non veg, which is totally fine.
Similarly, it’s perfectly fine if he drank a bit during his youth and kind of gave up or reduced after a while wanting be to healthy. He’s 82 now, fit with a mind that ticks. Clear in his conversations, able to walk and move freely and live an independent life. What else does one want at that age?

And I also didn't like when you kept ranting every now and then that "during my childhood" stuff, just to show yourself as if you are a teenager. She just hushed with a thank you

The man deserved more than that for all the authenticity honesty and down to earth attitude.

Thanks a lot Ranjit ji for reminding me about the role of destiny in our lives, though I am still nnot fully convinced.
Your physique must have impressed, Ronnie, I guess, otherwise no reason for such spectacular introductions and the journey thereafter.
Last, but not the least, thank you Smita ji for such a nice conversation.
    Always love your podcasts.
Please contiue with the great work.

What a wonderful person is Ranjeet sahab. As a kid I used to be scared of him while watching him and his contemporaries in movie theatre. It is frustrating to see Smitaji interrupting unnecessary. She is pretending that she knows everything.

Lovable guy! Great story teller! Never knew this side of his personality. As someone said all the screen villains are gentlemen and all the screen heroes are real life villians!

Smitaji……I felt during interview at one or two places you made felt your guest a little bad with your expression and view. Although your intentions were not that, but you are senior journalist and legend. He is legendary villain when I was growing up. Also yes you ended show abruptly, he got many stories.

@ANI , please engage someone else for the POD casts. Let Smita handle the background work. Such a legendary actor is being interviewed, but there is no basic research about him. Asking stupid questions that are irrelevant to the guest. Why should he talk about other actors' lifestyles?

He is my favourite villian , In the 70's his physics was outstanding , leapord shape type of body . Ist film i saw Victoria No.203 . Remember the song Thoda sa with Saira Banu. Old Actors were the best . Interview is incomplete, must be done 2nd part.
