This one has been on our list for a while! In this video we show you have we gave an old hatchet a new lease of life by giving a brand new handle made from (you guessed it!) recycled plastic. One request we get a lot is how we make our moulds, so for this one we thought we'd show you how you can make a custom mould using materials you might already have lying around.
Let us know what you think of our HDPE axe! We are totally loving the black/white/orange combo and will definitely be using it in more projects. Thanks for watching!

I like that you guys used tools and methods that have some hope of actually recovering your waste. It disturbs me to see so many makers do a ton of sanding and create microplastic dust that ends up all over the place.

I have a suggestion for the loose handle problem. Just before the final assembly, put the handle in the fridge and the head in the oven on low heat. Expand and contract effect. love your videos.

    • @dommyboysmith
      @dommyboysmith ปีที่แล้ว +13

The only problem I see with that is any temperature you'd have to heat it to to get adequate expansion, would remelt the plastic. If you kept it under 200 degrees, it's possible, but the effect would be very minimal.
Tough situation using metal and plastic both.
Honestly, I would have tried cutting a slot and attempting a normal axe wedge setup. Maybe heat the head slightly with a heat gun if cracking is the fear.
Only one way to find out! Cheers 🍻

But if the handle is cold and hard how would you get it in the tapered hole? It needs to be hot to form it to the contours of the hole.

I just stumbled across your video and watched. I enjoyed it. If you do make a full size axe handle, look into carbon fiber rods. Many guitar builders who do put truss rods in their guitar (and other musical instrument) necks will reinforce them with 2 carbon fiber rods down the length of the neck. For your axe handle, 1 or 2 rods down the length of the handle should add great reinforcement without adding a bunch of weight. If you do it for your small axe handles you can probably get away with just one rod in the handle. I enjoyed your video. Cheers.

I put plastic handles on mattocks (handles start SLOPPY and heads are cast with random variances). The trick to a tight resilient mate is close to what you tried - heat the head to just above the melting point of the handle and stuff it in against a blockage. The plastic melts away where tight and mushrooms out into any spaces. Once cooled, I can slam things all day and never had even a wobble.

Разве что можно как на современных топорах какую-то полимерную резиновую ручку сделать. Вот то офигенно, а это так, туфта. И да я тоже заметил, на замедлении идеально видно, что рукоять болтается...

Great video I love these recycling projects. Perhaps when you had made the wooden form, make it true to the shape of the original axe handle. This may have fit the axe head better and saved you all of that mucking about filling gaps where the axe handle fits into the axe head.🙃

Axe handle fitting tip. Put a slit in the end of the handle that will let the end spread, making for a firmer fit.

Nice! I am brand new to the HDPE ideas and can't wait to try some of my own ideas but now with plastics.
New Fan! Thanks again and I'll definitely be watching.

So cool guys well done .Most handles are cut partway down the part in the head so the wedge just spreads the 2 halves.

Love the colors and the work, but the plastic handles you get from the hardware stores are recycled. I work for a company in Chattanooga TN that's made them for close to 48 years. I do love that y'all are showing how to DIY. Keep up the good work

Definitely do a full size ax too! I’ve got a 3lb splitting ax head that could use a good new handle (although I don’t have the talent or the tools to make one like yours)
