  • In the video, I will be upgrading my tried and true US 8 150 POE switch to the new Pro Max 16 Poe switch. Let's find out if I made the right choice.

I believe they made the power supply external because they wanted to share lots of parts between the poe and the non poe switch. I have the non poe model and it's nearly identical except for the MUCH smaller power brick.
I actually started out with an Enterprise 8 POE switch, it's just 8 ports but apart from that very much what you requested. 8 poe+ ports, all of them 2.5 gbit, plus two sfp+ ports. Internal power supply. Main reason for buying it was that I'm tired of ugly switches that I need to hide. But it costs around $100 more than the Pro Max 16 POE and almost twice as much as the Pro max 16 without poe. But after having it for a while I learned about the Pro Max so now I have a Pro Max 16, non-poe too, Haven't really put any of them through its paces yet though.

All good points. It was just hard to take when my old 8 port Unifi switch was an all-in-one unit. It still a good switch none the less.

Also for the external power bricks they arnt selling them separately! It erks me that they arnt selling such an easily replaceable part that might break in the lifespan of the switch.

You are right. In theory, it is a good switch but falls short in so many places.

6 minutes in and I like how you approach stuff. Please check the audio as it is low compared to other audio (music/video) that I listen to.

Thank you so much for the kind words. Yeah,I'm still trying to get the audio mastered. Maybe this next video, I'll get it squared away.

Not everyone has space for rack mountable networking equipment, my home network cabinet is small and having smaller switch with external power is my only option.

It’s nice but I need more 10gb ports or more 2.5gb ports and I would buy it up so fast

I couldn't agree more. I am unsure why 2.5Gb is not the new standard since so many devices now support it.

10gb fiber cables are cheap, 10gb network cards are cheap. What do you use 2.5gb for? It seems like 1gb or 10gb are the logical choices here.

@@DerekDavis213 laptops, it’s not economic to buy thunderbolt to to 10g adapters. Plus Ethernet you can terminate very easily to custom lengths

@@phillipcoplen8051 True, it's easy to make your own Cat5e cables. I've made many myself.
But Om3 fiber cables are dirt-cheap on Amazon. Most computers now have ultra-fast SSD drives, so 10gb fiber is perfect for that. If you like to edit big 4k video files, or you are recording TV shows on a home theater PC, 10 gig networking is very helpful.

@@DerekDavis213 The custom built NAS I built is an Minisfourn AR900i. With the HBA card installed in the one PCIE slot I only have the onboard 2.5 lan port. So having that 2.5gb ports is a plus.

I agree, Ubiquiti missed the mark on value here.

I love their products, no question. But they missed so many marks on what could have been a great switch.

USW-Aggregation from Ubiquiti is an 8-port SFP+ 10gb switch for 269. Pretty good value, for what you get.

I have looked at those before. I did toss around the idea of getting it over this one, but decided against it. I needed something new and my current eight port Unifi switch was showing its age.

Ya I’m new to the IT world and I can already see unifi is basically just apple in this realm and don’t offer much just good gui basically and I’m pretty sure the owner of the company used to work with them so makes sense. I like mikrorik the most atm. But they don’t do many Poe+ switches but tp link seems second best after that to me

I stick with them for the simplicity of their management of the devices.
The path they are on has potential, but they are not capitalizing on it.
