SHINKO, JAPAN; a tHRiViNG sci-fi surf scene

- Welcome to Shinko, a unique and unexpected surf scene in Japan. A wave with unusual contrast- on one side, the raw, powerful energy of the ocean, and on the other, the industrial hum of machinery, both coexisting in this unexpected surf haven.
I’m always excited to explore different surf spots and immerse myself in the unique surf cultures during my travels. Surfing Japan is not all about navigating through rocks like a kamikaze pilot (like my last video at God's Crack), here is a look at a more traditional Japanese surf scene… a sci fi looking one at that!
Hope you enjoy this journey of a very special scene in Japan. Thank you to Keito Matusuoka for showing us around and plugging us into your world! Without your help and guidance this video would not be possible.
I would also like to thank Shohei Echigo for letting us stay at "Hotel Shohei". And Shohei's dad for being the first to surf Shinko, congratulations on discovering an ENTIRE surf scene 🤯 Massive thanks to rest of the surf community for having us :)
Thanks to Coby Perkovich, Shouta Sawada and Misaki Haberl. For assistance on translations.

You are a gift to surfing. These documentaries are of unprecedented quality.
thank you so much 🙌 there so much beauty in our sport and so many cool scenes, the world deserves to understand how epic surfing is 😂
@@DylanGravesYT you somehow manage to convey that. I know there are many media outlets with bigger budgets and so many people involved and they don't manage to match what you're doing. These are authentic, interesting insights. The storytelling is great and authentic, The filmmaking and editing is pleasing. You select good suitable music and I think you even play some of it yourself, right? Im just really stoked about every single video you post. Im sending heaps of appreciation from Germany ( We sometimes get really windy waves in our part of the Baltic Sea too btw :D )
@@johannesdenecke2422 thank u 🥰 yes I make some music myself. Found these cool songs from artists that allow revenue share that I felt paired well with the footage in this one, and I made the final song.
I see a lot of content out there try to “make” surfing cool. Surfing IS cool, it’s beyond any label actually, you don’t have to try and make it anything, surfing will represent itself if u give it the chance.
Keep it in your pants
I recently went surfing in Japan (on Hokkaido) and it was such a great experience. Beforehand, I had read stories about heavy localism in Japan and was a bit worried. When we turned up (at 7am) it was super crowded already. The spot looked similar to yours, next to and industrial area. The carpark scene was exactly like you described it; people had thought of everything, our guide/friend had his own portable shower.
The waves were amazing and the lineup was so friendly and respectful, I have never been in a lineup that crowded where people really respect surf-etiquette. People were smiling at me when I was surfing and it was so much fun. Our friend even told us that the locals had sent him messages afterwards that they really enjoyed sharing the lineup with us foreigners. Gone were all the ‘heavy localism’ narratives. It really was one of my favorite surfing memories and probably my favorite memory from the whole 3 week trip. Stoked to see that it’s the same in other surfspots in Japan!
That’s epic ! Stoked to hear that :)
I don't know why: you don't send photos or videos of yourself just to me!!! Why: don't enter my whatsapp, why: You avoid me!!!??? Please don't throw me away!!! Why!!!??? I'm your secret admirer!!! I really like you, friend from afar!!! I love you man!!! Rubenn Dean Paul Alws "Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro" Brazil!!! (Google/TH-cam)
Right on Dylan. Always look forward to the new vids.
🍻thank you 🙏
Nice to see how friendly all the surfers are - I grew up surfing in San Diego and friendly surfers are few and far between 🏄
Ah man i love your films.
Your videos put my faith back into the cool chill surf vibes I once knew when I first started surfing. It’s tough to maintain positive attitudes surfing in LA after Covid.
This video was top notch! I'm a Japanese American whos family migrated to Hawaii in 1900, first generation mainlander 😂being born and raised in Florida though, but its always been a dream of mine to spend time in Japan to score good waves, skate the streets of Tokyo at night, gorge on the best cuisine on planet earth, and you're mapping it out for me! This stoked me out to get out there soon, super hyped. Shinko seems like a definite spot on that trip now, thank you Dylan!
Epic man :) a worthy spot on th list for u to get back to the motherland!
So glad you’re spotlighting Japan, Kyushu has some great waves and awesome culture 👌🏼
Been wanting to go for a while. So many spots now on my list, just taking it slow and waiting for more budget to come in so I can go to all these amazing places / countries 🙌
Man these short docus never fail to warm my heart! From Weird Waves to these series - sheer stoke and kindness. Keep it up (please)!
Glad to hear it 🙏 I plan to keep going as long as I can !
@@DylanGravesYT Great! and you're always welcome to check out the Dutch surf scene. Small but developing, with every now and then some great grey North Sea surf.
wow Dylan, your approach to different surf cultures is so caring and really contributes to sharing it while respecting local surfers while putting them on the scene well done mate !
I learned to surf in Japan. Such a sick scene. So many spots. Even back in 2005. The wave energy is different., too. Punchy as hell when small. Great vibes. Thanks for posting this.
Rad 💯
This is great ! I love Japan !
thanks a lot for sharing the experience.
Japan rules indeed, Glad you enjoyed it :)
I want to go climb that mountain too!
Start training
music is fantastic in this one, great job dude!
@@cboria148 🍻
That was tight! Surf was pumping. A swell magnet, good banks, peaks everywhere, good community and parking lot setup, etc. Like a little amphitheatre for Japanese surfing. An ideal training ground for the next gen of rippers 💚✌🏼
Oh, and incredible ramen, obviously 😅
💯 an absolute joy to experience and fun getting to relive all the footage and attempt to encapsule that here :) 🍻for watching
i love your videos man i cant imagine why so few people watch
🙏 thank you I appreciate that. All that watch is enough for me :)
Such a great video! To see the boys, Keito, Kai and Tsubasa come up in the video gave me goose bumps. Love Japanese surf culture and lifestyle.
Hammers 🔨 they were all killing it!
Just Awesome... the people , the waves, the vibes....the respect!
🍻
I don't know what I enjoy more in these videos, the surfing or the local cuisine - that ramen looked amazing!
🙌 hontestly me either, that ramen was hands down the best I’ve ever had no bs
Wow, that was really cool!
It is the best surf film i ve seen in a while. Thank you
🙏
Thanks that was great to view!
🙏 thanks for stopping by 🍻
Id go just for the car park! I love vans!!
Rad scene 💯
Awesome as usual! Refreshing surf vlog.
Dig it Dylan. Always fun.
Dylan mixes the culture and food documentary style with surfing so well! Reminds me of Anthony Bourdain. Great work always!
Huge congrats on conquering the second shortest mountain in Japan!
🙌🙌😂😂😂 thank you 🙏
Inspirational spot..of a gem
Love your vids! Capturing the stoke and joy that we all love about surfing, so cool to see a glimpse of surfing in Shinko. Greetings from Barcelona! 👊
Gracias por su apoyo ! 🙏🍻
Is Dylan Graves one of the coolest human beings on this planet? I love everything about his videos, especially the music. They just make me happy to be alive.
Thank you 🙏 🥰 glad to hear it 🍻🫡
You are “making surfing great again” with these amazing mini-docs. Keep up the awesome work Dylan!
PS: Surfing has always been great though. 😁🤙🏼
sick video dylan, loved the way you presented the whole scene with such detail
Thank you 🙏 glad to hear it :)
Epic.. what an unreal place..
Thanks for showing us this. The video is too short ! Want to see more!
I am personally glad to see there is still some great people who completely understood the surfing vibes, out of the crowded Malibu chaos, competitive asshat in the lineup and getting robbed on the parking. I live in LA area, unfortunately the surfing vibes is not what it was anymore
I hope you had the chance to visit Sendai’s Volcano, natural hot springs and the town are amazing 🤩
Nice work. Nice work Shinko
Great content, love the music!
🙏
El Dylan siempre con videazos! Grande! 👏👏👏👏
So good, thanks Dylan.
Awesome. Good vibes by the looks
👍🏾 Good words: generations of beach bumming 🪄 industrial zone🌊

Hiya ! Thanks do tuning in 🍻
Wow awesome video Dylan, well done
Great video, love Japan....
Japan rules. Japanese people rule. Japanese surfers super rule! Big love from the USA!
Agreed !
shinko. wave of winter. second smallest mountain in japan. 😎🇺🇸
Congratulations on reaching the summit🎉
Lots of prep but we achieved it 💪
Thanks Dylan for showing this. - The last time I saw the coast of Sendai was just after the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011 I'd been working in the snow fields of Niseko I assisted a clean up operation just North of there and it was completely devastated. I think about the loss I witnissed often and after watching this I realise I need to go back and see it how it is now and perhaps get a little closure.
If you are ever up that way in Winter you should try and get in touch with the snow surfers of Niseko. A shaper called Taro Tamai who makes the most beautiful bindless snowboards
I heard stories of this and remember seeing it on the news. Wild to think that that happened and to see it like it is now, just how resilient the land and people are 🙌
Would definitely love to go back and experience the snow and get into the snow/ surf scene there I love watching those guys so much ❤️
The Sendai coast was particuarly hit hard. To see people back enjoying the ocean is incredibly gratifying. I'm going to ride my bike down that coast surfing where possible
The snow and surf scene in Japan is unlike anywhere else I have been in the world. There is a level of particular freedom and joy in the subcultures of Japan that runs contrary to the orthodoxy of everyday life.
Good stuff, Dylan.
Hola Dylan continua viajando así veo los distintos lugares y su gente. Muy buenos los videos. Este estuvo zarpadoo
🙌 gracias 🙏!
dang naming your kid "Curren" is as core as it gets
Man those waves turned out to massive and gnarly. Bet that was some good times, the people looked like awesome folks :)
This was sick!
If you can get there (have the time/money), I recommend a side trip to Okinawa. It's beautiful, and if the waves are not working, the free-diving and reefs are pretty, too. Spent a memorable 14 days there down in Naha and then Ikei beach. The far side reefs on the other side of the island are where you want to look, if you go. I found some great shallow reef spots, 3-4ft, light offshores, 30 degrees celsius water temps. Oh, and definitely enjoy the sesame soba noodles. Best I ever had!!!
Sounds absolutely magic and will def keep in mind to check out at some point! Officially on the list 🍻
looks epic great flick
🍻
Real chill
Great video! Never knew japan had such a sick surf seen!
THIS VIDEO IS SICK
Arigato 🙏
Awesome,Dylan!
Stoked you got to sample some!! :)
Track on min 7:35 is great. love that synth
You got some sick ones for sure
🙏
Like Alkantstrand in South Africa. You can be surfing whilst you have massive container ships going past you in the background on their way into and out of the harbour at Richard’s Bay.
🙌 seems common that there are good waves near big ports, sounds rad there !
Sooo CoooOL to see You getting around all over Dylan ! What a fine crew of surf cats to visit too. Respect to the Sendai crew !.....Hiya Takeshi !...e..
Same trip as the Gods Crack video just took me a minute to work on this one and get it ready
@@DylanGravesYT a fine edit indeeed Dylan. Keep doing it, having fun,..and we'll keep watching !....e.

Big and heavy close-outs today in Shikoku. Not too many people out in the Typhoon swells.

The Japanese are the nicest people on this planet. Japanese surfers must be next level GCs. And then there’s the FOOD!!! Yeow!!!! 🤙🏽😎🤙🏽
Agreed ! Yes and yes surfers and food next level ❤️
Mepic
Come to Okinawa southern outer islands, unique surfing scene, and the islander culture is very different from mainland Japan.
Would love to check it sometime 💯
@@DylanGravesYT Let me know if you do, I am a kite surfer tho.
@@Alexander-Kurtz all are welcome. What would u say the most unique thing about surf / kite culture is in Okinawa ?
@@Alexander-Kurtz all are welcome. What would u say the most unique thing about surf / kite culture is in Okinawa ?
@@DylanGravesYT The area I live (the Yaeyama archipelago) is the most southern part of Japan, closer to Taiwan and the north of the Philippines, than the main Japanese islands. It has a Hawaiian or Polynesian vibes....
I lived in Japan for two years....('92-'94) There was maybe 100 surfers....
Those peaks are created by side waves coming off the harbour wall. Important point.
The second smallest mountain in Japan! 😂
😂😂😂 so epic !
🙏🏼
Wow thank you so much 🙏 really appreciate this !
favorite part was japans 2nd smallest mountain
So fun
Sick waves just have to wonder about the water quality with all that industrial activity?
Team Coquí Bodyboarders from South Puerto Rico in the house
4:59 Are you serious? How large are these waves?O.o
