- These are some of my 2014 breeding finches in Sydney, Australia. Some I selected for head shape and others for colour, at the same time as trying to keep the gene pool broad. There's one particularly strongly coloured male Gouldian Finch - hIs chest is darker and his feathering more iridescent than the others. You can spot him first on a branch to the right, then he pecks at a piece of millet spray for a while, then hops across the front of the dish and hangs about on a rock to the left.
I also really like the black headed hens (check out the white-breasted one), and of course the stunning red-headed, white-breasted cock birds.
I have Gouldian Finches descended from this colony for sale in Sydney every December, and sometimes January. Check Gumtree under "Pittwater area". (Please don't enquire if you are not local, as there is no way for me to sell them to you :).)

BTW, the background sound is tens of thousands of Cicadas chirping. They are so loud this year!

I felt exactly the same way when I first saw Gouldian Finches! Thought they must be some super exotic species.
Turned out I could buy and keep them easily in Australia. I've bred them to be extra nice since then, but the species is jaw-dropping.

I do wonder how many people mark larger videos down just because their connection is slow or they don't know how to alter playback resolution, or as a reaction to the sound of the cicadas in the background that they presume is poor audio! mantidgirl It's sprouted seed. They really love it and it's very healthy for them. I've a video on how to make it in my channel. (Not sure how to post that link here - it won't let me.)
Finchesca I have watched that video, a question concerning that, do you have to rinse out the seed often? i did have a try, but it didn't seem successful.
mantidgirl I rinse at least twice a day, usually three times. After 24 hours the sprouts are usually not yet visible, but after 48 hours many are visible. This assumes a reasonably comfortable/warm air temperature. If the seed has not sprouted after this time, it may mean that your seed is no good - either it's very old or has been treated in some way that prevents sprouting. Try different, fresher seed.

+petrochemicals4u Yes, I breed to emphasise the blue behind the neck. I have succeeded in that. It occurs to me that I could take the blue quite far down - create a blue-necked Gouldian!

BJ Smith Sorry for the very late reply! Some of the colouring of the males, which has UV reflective properties, is enhanced by digital cameras. But yes, they do have very good colour. I feed quality seed (dry and green/fresh), egg, shells, mineral/vitamin/protein powders, and green vegetables. I also select for colour and shape very carefully each year, so they gradually get better with each season. :)

George Lincoln, I think your TH-cam settings may be preventing me from replying to your question directly. The third blue bird is a female Cordon Bleu Finch. (Male Cordon Bleus are similar, but with slightly more blue and dark red cheek patches.)

THESE FINCHES ARE NEARLY EXTINCT IN THE WILD HERE IN AUSTRALIA... GOOD TO SEE THAT AT LEAST THE POPULATION IS STILL FLOURISHING IN CAPTIVITY.
Yes, it's widely acknowledged that taking these rare, stunning birds off the administratively weighty 'license-holders only' list some years ago, has turned the population around. There's nothing in the way of people keeping Gouldians now, so the captive population has grown massively - along with a fantastic community knowledge-base about their care and a strong conservation motivation.

Ich hatte 2 Weibchen und 2 Männchen zusammen mit Kanarienvögeln in der Voiliere. Cleopatra und Cesar und Mona Lisa und Rembrand. Diese Namen hatte ich den 4 gegeben. So süß.
Bei den Golds haben die Männchen die kräftigeren Farben.

Please help me. I lost a lot of Golden Finches. The reason is that the fetus completes its growth and dies inside the egg, although the eggs are moistened with water in order to increase the moisture and facilitate its reduction.

I read the population is just 2400 and people were still trapping them from the wild for the pet trade as recent as 1981. Wonder if they will truly make a population comeback to previous historical numbers. Is it possible? Is there really a robust breeding campaign?
