Weirdly enough, this one actually appealed to me far more than the second one since I absolutely adore weird, janky games that don't quite work properly.
I missed how PS2 Atlus was willing to experiment still and made some real bangers as a result in which the new Era has not even really come close to matching.

I absolutely loved Raidou. Was so happy when there'd be a Persona Musou since that's basically a continuation of its mechanics. They seem to be hella polarizing but... oh well, I want more people talking about them and actually playing them. I can't say I've played anything like it.
As someone who goes out of their way to talk to every NPC in RPGS, in this game it feels like a chore. Especially since alot of them change as you progress the story, & given Raidou's slow movement & encounter rate... oof.
Ah yes the classic rpg sin of "im gonna make the npcs change trough the game so it feels more alive" Not thinking how this will make players have to return to every npc after a main plot point so they dont lose anything on the story Smt 5 did the same thing however THEY MARKED THE NPCS ON THE MAP HELL YEAH
@@valletasnot really a sin i think, in some games it's really interesting to go back and see what new things the npcs have to say In the trails series, every npc in the entire region gets new lines at every plot point, and for the most part, it's really interesting, each npc have their own little story and connection to other npc, and they do a great job at either building the world, deepening the characters (because some hidden npc knows the playable characters), or just making me laugh. So yeah rewriting npcs along the way is not necessarily a sin, but if it's just filler (got rewritten only because he had to be rewritten) then yeah it can be pretty boring

But for me I don’t play most games for gameplay, I play them for vibes, music, dialogue, characters and chill factor, the gameplay part of battling and levelling up feels like a chore to me in most games (except from soft, I like the gameplay part in that, but even then its not the main reason I play their games, I play em for vibe factor)

I absolutely loved the game including the gameplay. While yes, the gameau isn't anything impressive, it's not bad. Of course, it becomes tiresome at around end-game but that applies to most games that have random encounters, that's why there are repulse waters for dirt cheap in this game
i loved digital devil saga and finished raidou 1 yesterday, raidou is a bit rough at times but presentation wise its awesome, loved the music, the setting, the designs.
I feel like because the combat didn't bother me as much I enjoyed exploration and talking to NPC. The game has a version of the rumor system in persona 2 that gives you hidden quests and all this makes it one of my favorite games in the series to explore, but I can see why most people find it unbearable.
That's something I liked a lot too. My first megaten game was persona 2 eternal punishment and I liked the callback when I played Raidou vs souless army. The order I've played the games were a mess though 😂

The series is massive and includes so many different games and premises, so choosing to play games that look the most interesting to you is a good start. Yeeeeah, as stylish as both Raidou games are and as cool as the core concept of a character action-y SMT game is, the first one really feels like a jank, unfinished prototype of an idea more than a game. The story and setting and overall presentation are fantastic, but the gameplay is just not there. Luckily the sequel improved on all of that! Surprised to read you don't like DDS though, that one's probably in my top 3 or so Atlus games. What is it you dislike about it?
I dunno what it was about DDS 1 but it never really clicked with me and when I thought it got interesting it was over, thankfully the second game has been a much more enjoyable experience.

Honestly the opening minute just describes a lot of really great PS2 games Sometimes the gameplay was a real miss but the story was really fucking gopd (drakengard comes to mind)

Smt Nocturne includes Dante from devil may cry. It's such a massive meme that I think it's understandable to think atlus's attempt at a action rpg might play similar to the famous Dante from devil may cry. Smt especially tries new genres all the time too. Perfectly reasonable leap of logic imo.

Interesting video to get recommended after I finished the game, huh. Anyways, I have to disagree on a couple of your points, but also agree on them a little bit. Primarily, yes, Raidou's gameplay its a bit repetitive, he only gets access to very few moves and deals surpar damage to certain demons, being almost useless in specific boss battles. The combat is rather geared towards your AI partner instead, which brings it owns issues since they can be dumb and get stuck trying to attack the enemy behind someone. It's a strange choice for a action game for sure, and yet its not a big of a issue. For as limited as Raidou's moveset is, you can mix it up somewhat by attacking twice into a stinger or spin slash, and his gun brings more utility as both a ranged attack and a way to create your own openings. The game is still a masher's heaven mind you, i'm not saying this is secretly the next DMC, but there is enough to be a fun, addictive gameplay loop. Your demons have their problems too, for once you can't control them alongside Raidou and every physical move they can learn is terrible, no exceptions. Their elemental attacks and healing is where their utility lies, and its why you can keep low-levels demons like Moh-Shuuvu for the entire game (she even dealt the killing blow in some bosses during my playthough) That last part is one of my favourites though! Being able to keep your demons for the entire game really builds a sense of camadery between you, shoutouts to my man Thoth, he made me straight up invincible every fight. (And Raiju too, he was fused from the Ukobach you get at the start and was my first no-weakness demon) Lastly, the part where I don't agree at all with is the exploration/investigation. I get that random encounters are annoying and all, but dont act like the game doesn't give you options to deal with it. Order skills keeps all your demons from being useless, and forces you to keep one of each (except skill-order) for that fantastic localization work (seriously, I love the writing in this game) and gameplay rewards/progresion. You touched on the red crystals dumming you out, which I don't get at all. They are there to reward keeping multiple demons of different types, the item inside of them changes depending on the personality of the demon, for example, my man Thoth gives you relics to sell while Alice (and Moh Shuuvu too since they share personality) gives you mp-restoring items. They are a great addiction and if you know which of your demons give what, they are a powerful tool. One little thing before I end this Wall That Must Be Crossed of a comment, you showed on screen that the maximun number of tubes you can get is 10, while in reality is 12, please do research before saying things like that. Onto King Abaddon, for now.

Imo The only smt games where your protag is a glorified support character is smt1 and SJ. In smt3,4,4a,5 and the DDS games your protag is one of if not your strongest asset at almost all times, hell in SMT2 you don’t even need demons most of the time
I wanted to as well, and honestly out of the two I'd replay King Abaddon more often than Soulless Army (Though I kind of enjoyed Soulless Army story more....I'm a sucker of first games over their second game sequels sometimes LOL). But I will agree the game was a good example of them "prototyping" alot of things they fixed for the better in King Abbadon!
I wished he had more combos too. I just level up mine main demons & had the helpers (quest item ones) on the back row. Half & half 😂 I remembered fighting to level up a lot. Some parts was hard. But the dude became a tank halfway in the game. I barely used the gun. Money was a b 😂 one demon had a skill to find random items out the blue. So it helped a little selling stuff

I haven't finished the game yet, haven't played it in a while, but I love it. now if there is one thing I don't like about the game from my small amount of hours played, is the random encounters with solo demon investigation. this is only because I had a bad experience with alp, also speaking of demon only fights are not fun. I haven't gotten to a point to where I think the gameplay got too repetitive, but I can see how it can and will, but still better gameplay than persona 1.
It's not a bad game it's fairly enjoyable but there's like 1 side quest if it had abit more depth with that would of been amazing the sequel is definitely the better title

Game don't aged well unlike other PS2 Atlus games (SMT III, DDS 1&2, Persona 3&4) mainly due to action RPG combat. Raidou games definitely needs remake.

Which Kyouji, the original or the Protagonist? Original Kyouji was too much of an asshole for me to like him cool wise! I will give it that the point was to show Devil Summoners and Dark Summoners "weren't so different" but DAMN was he an asshole...especially the parts when he fucked you over the first time (Sid ended up ruining that plan) and the second (his attempt to take back his body at the expense of sending you to Hell prioritizing his body over focusing on the fucking case!). On the other hand he's grown on me....just wish we'd see more Protagonist Kyouji! If they ever get back to the Devil Summoner series! I'd prefer another game set in the modern era like DS1 and Soul Hackers! As much as I enjoyed the Raido games. They're prologue for a reason, and I think everything we needed to know was finished off nicely in King Abaddon! I don't want to play as Raido anymore! I always liked the "Protagonist being dragged into a secret world he previously never knew existed like "Kyouji/Protagonist and SH Protagonist"....it better justifies why he starts as a Level 1 noob then Raido's "being out of action for a short period." Hell set it in a period where Raido would still be alive and active but much older! That be interesting, maybe the 60's or 70's? If Raido survived WW2 he'd be in his 40's or 50's I think by those periods!
cant agree with p4 being the best megaten, those random dungeons are dog shit. Raidou 2 is up there as one of the best; persona just doesnt compare. Its a visual novel, I cant even consider it a megaten game with how different it is.

I wanted to as well, and honestly out of the two I'd replay King Abaddon more often than Soulless Army (Though I kind of enjoyed Soulless Army story more....I'm a sucker of first games over their second game sequels sometimes LOL). But I will agree the game was a good example of them "prototyping" alot of things they fixed for the better in King Abbadon!

I wished he had more combos too. I just level up mine main demons & had the helpers (quest item ones) on the back row. Half & half 😂 I remembered fighting to level up a lot. Some parts was hard. But the dude became a tank halfway in the game. I barely used the gun. Money was a b 😂 one demon had a skill to find random items out the blue. So it helped a little selling stuff
The second game is probably what you’re looking for, it’s sick.

I haven't finished the game yet, haven't played it in a while, but I love it. now if there is one thing I don't like about the game from my small amount of hours played, is the random encounters with solo demon investigation. this is only because I had a bad experience with alp, also speaking of demon only fights are not fun.
I haven't gotten to a point to where I think the gameplay got too repetitive, but I can see how it can and will, but still better gameplay than persona 1.

This was going to be a PSP game initially, so...
It's not a bad game it's fairly enjoyable but there's like 1 side quest if it had abit more depth with that would of been amazing the sequel is definitely the better title

i played like an hour of this game and really didnt like it that much. i think random encounters in action rpgs is a pretty dumb concept. castlevania curse of darkness is the much better demon summoner action rpg

Game don't aged well unlike other PS2 Atlus games (SMT III, DDS 1&2, Persona 3&4) mainly due to action RPG combat. Raidou games definitely needs remake.
@@nr2676 Yep definitely need a remake but the chance is really slim given atlus got small catalogue of ARPG even striker was 90% outsourced and If atlus decided to make their own ARPG from scratch? most likely it gonna be for new or their existing popular IP so definitely not raidou series that already riddled with controversy.

Original Kyouji was too much of an asshole for me to like him cool wise! I will give it that the point was to show Devil Summoners and Dark Summoners "weren't so different" but DAMN was he an asshole...especially the parts when he fucked you over the first time (Sid ended up ruining that plan) and the second (his attempt to take back his body at the expense of sending you to Hell prioritizing his body over focusing on the fucking case!). On the other hand he's grown on me....just wish we'd see more Protagonist Kyouji!
If they ever get back to the Devil Summoner series! I'd prefer another game set in the modern era like DS1 and Soul Hackers! As much as I enjoyed the Raido games. They're prologue for a reason, and I think everything we needed to know was finished off nicely in King Abaddon! I don't want to play as Raido anymore! I always liked the "Protagonist being dragged into a secret world he previously never knew existed like "Kyouji/Protagonist and SH Protagonist"....it better justifies why he starts as a Level 1 noob then Raido's "being out of action for a short period." Hell set it in a period where Raido would still be alive and active but much older! That be interesting, maybe the 60's or 70's? If Raido survived WW2 he'd be in his 40's or 50's I think by those periods!
