We had the cones made by a sail maker from left over spinnaker cloth. we actually also use a retrieval dyneema line at the end of the droge line by putting a " of chain at the end a tennis ball as floater , floating below water line.. the retrieval line is about a 2 meter longer then the drogue line, so it would "dangle" at the back, so retrieving is very easy..
Jeez, how long did it take to build it? I think I would go crazy sewing and attaching the 100+ cones specified? Did you use lighter rope for the tail segments?
It took FOREVER! My mom chipped in to help with a lot of the sewing. It took roughly 20 min per cone to sew and 5 min to do the straps. We used anchor line. 116 cones. We couldn’t find any 3/4 in line at all- it’s a special order item and it’s $$$
How do you plan to properly test the seams, webbing and individual cones to make sure they are up to the task? Do you know what the forces are to which you need to test these?
It's not a piece of gear we plan to use often if ever but good to have on board in case we get caught out. I could deploy it in a rough sea but honestly these are extremely hard to retract and I feel that deploying the drogue just to test it is unnecessary risk but maybe dragging a couple extra cones on a warp behind the boat while underway couldn't hurt - I'll see if I can try someting like that, thanks!
Erik Christiansson it looks like that! Not exactly. Dacron would have cost a fortune so we used rip stop nylon. If it holds up for just a few deployments it will be a few too many as we’re hoping to never use it.
@@SailingBalachandra without having a way of testing the reporpused materials, I'd have a hard time trusting that gear. But you're the one out there. I guess you're a braver man than I.
Great video and one year later I hope you had no occasion to use how if you did how did it work out please? I see that There is one link to Shane sailing in comments who used his series drogue. Alas Shane later on lost mast.
Great question, we have never had to deploy the drogue knock on wood, however i spoke with someone a few days ago who needed to use one off the stern of his 40' ketch complete with custom stainless stern mounts. He said it worked perfectly
@@SailingBalachandra good to hear that all has been well. Happy New year for 2021! did the 40' ketch use a drogue they made or did they purchase? Your story ref hand made really got use thinking - plus we subscribed too!
Hi, after watching your video I contacted Sailrite but they informed me they discontinued their drogue kit. May I kindly ask you for a copy of the instruction manual you refer to? Thanks, Frans
Yes, someone else asked for it as well. Sailrite May be SELLING hand made JS drogues now so taking down the DIY instructions would follow... contact us on Facebook and I’ll send you the PDF :)
@@SailingBalachandra Hi, no unfortunately sail rite stopped with all their safety gear. I have sent you 2 messages via FB. Did you receive any of them?
Such an important topic for any serious sailboat owner yet only 4k views . Thanks for sharing and Keep up the good work .

Sailing Channel Marinus - that’s a great idea! Have you ever deployed it? I’ve read that retrieval is a real problem even in calm seas
@@SailingBalachandra yes this way is easy as you pull it in from its tail
Not interested in making a drogue, but it is really nice seeing how it is built in order to understand it better. Thanks :)
Drouges can also be used as a floper stopper
Hearing Zeus in the background, Thought it was my Yorkie wanting outside. :)
Any reason you didn’t just singe the edges rather than sewing hems?

The drogue link does not work, nor does Sailrite carry the plans...whazzzup?
Did you just make life saving equipment from shopping bags?

How many yards of nylon did you use for 116 cones? I getting started on ours and require 125 cones.
SV Flying Spirit I used 300 yards of nylon for 116 cones and I had very little left over. Good luck with your Drogue!! :)
@@SailingBalachandra Thanks for posting, & reply. :)
Where can I buy this kind of needle at 6:00' ?
Michael Spooren I picked up this one at Walmart. Thanks for watching!

Many thanks. V. helpful vid - a rare thing on YT these days.
But that el-cheapo plastic sewing machine is painful to watch you use.
Heaving to will save alot of sewing!
That is not a zig zag stitch. It is called a multi-stitch.
Thanks!
