    I have been a massive fan of John prine for over half a century, my wife and I have seen him many times , and I miss him something awful.

      Wow. I believe you remember the Charlotte's Web folk club too. Have you seen Bob Gibson (and Camp)?

    I used to see Prine and Koloc and others at the Earl back in the day. Shortly before Goodman died he did a show at Harper College where he wore a Cubs cap while he sang the final song of the night : “A Dying Cubs Fans Last Request”. As he finished the song he tossed the cap into the audience and I still have that cap!

    John's look of pure admiration to Steve was so real. Steve was a better player, talked more, and had a better voice. But Steve knew that John was the more profound talent, so did more to promote John than anybody. John gave Steve homage after singing Souvenirs in every show until the end of his life. Now, both gone, and the world will not replace them. The best of Illinois and the best of the US.

      Best of friends. I discovered them in the mid 70s. Saw a dozen Prine shows. The best songwriter ever

      I mean Steve would have written many more signature songs had he not died young. Also the fight with cancer robbed him of production in his prime.

      I was literally just thinking about how amazing it is that such talented folk writers and musicians were both from such a great place, I love Illinois. God bless rock n roll.

    If songs were put in the registry of national historical monuments this would be in it and never allowed to be removed from youtube.

    In 1978 I went to see Steve Martins' Wild & Crazy Guy tour in Dallas. Steve Goodman came out as the unannounced warm up act. I had seen a few shows on PBS with Goodman, and was very pleasantly surprised to see Him. I felt like I was the only one there who knew who he was. Everyone was there to see crazy Steve Martin, not some unknown singer, and yet within a few songs His incredible charismatic stage presence had them in the palm of His hand. It was very impressive, and He did a very entertaining 30 min set. I'll never forget it, He made such a impact in His too short life. A few years later Steve Martin came on the Johnny Carson show and mentioned that He was doing a fund raising show to benefit Goodmans' wife and kids. I didn't know He was sick, or that He died. It was a shocking blow to hear. You feel so robbed when someone could have had a long career is abruptly gone. So sad. At least His music remains.

      He did the same thing opening for Emmylou Harris at the Greek Theater in Berkeley circa 1980. Steve was just great.

      Except that Goodman's wife did have some money problems after he died at 36. Would have been nice if his records had still been selling.

      A genius is someone who could build a nuclear bomb to stop World War II.
      Or build a smartphone
      These were just 2 friends who had fun together and were creative and wrote and played songs together
      I think the term “ genius “ gets thrown around way too much until it doesn’t mean anything anymore.
      This is only 1 man’s opinion.

    • @mikebressler9041
      @mikebressler9041 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JohnDoe-jc3cl I think there's all different kinds of genius in the world. These guys weren't nuclear scientists but John was a brilliant and in many ways profound (though down home) songwriter. And Steve was a totally amazing guitar player and performer. IMHO, I don't think the term genius is meaningless when used in conjunction with these guys.
