Very nice video. I think these more "mundane" aspects of everyday life really fascinating. War was, in some way, just one of many aspects of life.

Thank you! Absolutely! That is one the things i find most fascinating also!

Looks like a precursor to Backgammon which is everywhere in the Mediterranean. The rules are somewhat similar as well.

I actually haven't heard of that! Its possible they evolve from each other

Boardgames (and in general) are in our DNA.

Looks like even the ancient greeks were gamers!

The game reminds me a bit of "The Royal Game of Ur", the oldest boardgame we know. I built one a few years ago, and it is both an interesting and incredibly irritating game to play. This feels a tiny bit more refined (especially since using D6 dice is inherently more fun than Ur's annoying D4 die). The Game of 5 Lines also is oddly reminiscent of the German "Mensch ärgere dich nicht!", which I played religiously as a child against my nan, as well as the Indian game "Pachisi" and the English "Ludo". I think the latter 3 are quite similar

Its neat to see how these games are quite similar, and even similar to some modern games! Even seperated by countries and thousands of years, people end up doing similar things

@@LeonidasSparta-Fun-History Aye, it could be convergent evolution, but I rather think that Sumeria, laying firmly in the center of the ancient world, did their part in influencing everyone from Greece to India. If there's anything that will transcend borders geographical and political, it's stories, songs and games (and maybe STDs). Anything one merchant can share with another over drinks in boring, long nights in a foreign port will travel faster than fire.

Many many years later we the Greeks love to have fun playing "tavli" which seems to me like a long relative of this (I mean if you look at the paintings of people playing the ancient game it looks like the way modern people act). It is really nice to see this different aspect of ancient Greeks tbh

I have read about ancient Greeks playing board games but this is the first video of an actual demonstration of how to play. Great video as is your excellent video about Thermopylae. I hope you do more similar videos in the future including a very neglected subject when it come to hoplite warfare videos and that is ancient Greek sieges and fortifications.

Thank you for making this one. When I started writing Greek-themed stories I kept wondering how to replace the more "casual" and "mundane" elements. Like if I visualised my characters playing chess, I pause and wonder "OK what's the Greek version of this?"
Closest I had in my pre-internet research were the Celtic Fidchell and the Norse Hnefatafl.

Youre so welcome! This type of history is too often tossed aside for other aspects, but for me, this is some of my favorite parts! People of the past are just that... people, only seperated by time
