Ever hear when learning a new skill or subject, & eventually the knowledge will stick?
"Smooth Brain" was an insult that ironically described how a non-intelligent person's brain is so smooth, knowledge doesn't stick.
Doctors then named the disorder after the insult, because it actually causes the brain to have a much smoother texture.

These children have no fruitful future. Once you die he couldn't have taken care of himself. So his passing was a blessing in your case. There is a mentally retarded and physically contorted and handicap girl who has lived in my building since the mid 80's, she must be like 50+ years old now. Her whole life she has spent in a wheelchair with a feeding tube. Her whole family died a long time ago and the government is taking care of her. Nurses come to care for her around the clock, but since there is nobody watching you don't know WHAT they can be doing to her. So in that particular case being kept alive isn't a blessing, but a curse.

People always say "doctors told her/him/them" in such a rude, accusatory way, as if doctors just want to be mean or pessimistic. They don't. They're telling parents realistic expectations. Just because a few kids beat the odds doesn't mean the doctors are wrong or cruel; they're giving likely outcomes so parents can be realistic about it. The vast majority of medical professionals want everyone to beat the odds, so stop depicting them in a negative light.

The reason people talk like this about doctors these days it because of the increasing awareness of the multi-tiered healthcare system common in America. Go ahead, ask us veterans if most of us feel like we have been heard by our doctors? Absolutely not. I had to ignore TWO HUNDRED FIFTY healthcare professionals so that I could get my cancer diagnosis. They said it was "anxiety".
Modern doctors have absolutely EARNED the derision they get. Maybe they should stop being bad at their job and treat humans who are suffering like they're humans who are suffering.
Nothing more disgusting than talking to an arrogant god-complex unprofessional WEALTHY person who speaks down to you who has now lost your job because your illness has destroyed your life, you are poor, you are desperate, and NO ONE WILL HEAR YOU.

I've never heard this condition called by its common name (likely because of its common use as a slur), so this video's title really made me curious. Raising awareness is a great cause. I'll bet treatment in the US is expensive, and the financial strain could easily be an unnecessary source of stress when this young family already has so much to worry about. Regardless, their optimism and clear zest for life is inspirational!

If we removed tax breaks for religious groups, we could fund so much medical research so that little babies like Carter would be healed. We don't need prayers and magic. We need smart scientists who are funded so they can study the problem and solve it.
I mean, if the believers are upset, they can always pray to their particular god to send the money rather than demanding that we steal resources that can save so many people, including Carter, for their playtime with their fellow religious playdates.

Let's pick on the Catholics. This is from 2010. The Economist writers did a percentage breakdown on the American Catholics - so it'57% towards healthcare budgets, 28% on colleges, 6% on dioceses, and charity was about 2.7%.
Do you like those numbers? I don't. (Oh.. and I was nice when I wrote 5%.)
      Want more?
"According to a 2013 study by ECCU (“an alliance of Christian churches, parachurch ministries, schools, workers, and individuals” that “provide[s] a wide range of ministry-centric financial services and resources”), the members of ECCUs Ministry Advisory Panel spent on average 1% of their budget on “local/national benevolence” and 2% of their budget on “international benevolence”. I don’t know how representative this is of US churches in general."
So benevolence would be the charity part.
Are you impressed with that budget breakdown?
I'm not going to point to the Mormons but you may be interested in their "charitable" spending. It makes the Protestant look like Santa Claus. (I'm also not going for small churches because they can't do it. I'm nice.)

If they can control the seizures then I say that would ve a huge improvement. I wonder why the drugs aren't working for him. And because he is still little his brain is still growing greatly so its key movement to take advantage of. Specialized cells are stem cells and cell therapy from ones one blood seems to be doing a great job. This might be the key. Inject it into the Brain before birth. It's important to let parents know about any potential hardships as early as possible. It allows them to prepare more. Plus, the unfortunate reality of rare diseases is, we only really hear about the survivors of these rare conditions because of how rare survival can be; it wouldn't be on the news if it was typical. Granted, cautious optimism would probably be a good thing to implement in one's bedside manner.

According to wiki, you can actually find out after 20 weeks of gestation (that's when the brain stops looking smooth normally as it then starts to develop the gyri), but it's not a typical thing to look for unless you are already aware/weary of possible faulty brain development due to genetics or trauma.
It would need a combo of MRI, NMR, complex ultrasounds early on in the pregnancy.
So it's way too expensive and possibly stressful to make it a routine thing in America..
That said, I already forgot if they mentioned, in what state she's in, so depending on where a woman like her was going through her pregnancy, she might not even have been allowed an abortion, let alone a medically necessary one, which blows my mind as a European.
