  • Hi Guys,
    Welcome to this years first video. We hope 2023 has been awesome so far.
    We start the year with high energy and excitement about the Azores. On this video we explain why we feel 2023 may be the year to choose the 7th region of Portugal; the Azores.
    A lot of you might be asking, why would I choose the Azores? The general answer is that these beautiful nature islands really check a lot of the boxes, especially when it comes to choosing to retire, semi retire, buying a vacation home, working remotely or just visiting.
    On this video you will learn a lot about these North Atlantic Islands, such as location, climate, cost of living, quality of life and much more.
    We will also analyze our passed year on the island; and share our goals for 2023.
    We hope you enjoy learning about this amazing place.
    Love having you with us on our journey
    Carlos and Laura

      All the best in 2023, to you and your family. We are seeing an increase in active seniors vising, retiring or semi retiring in the Azores. You should plan a visit at some point prior to making a decision. Take good care Evadney!

    So very glad we found you guys! My husband and I absolutely fell in love with Portugal about 8 years ago and it imprinted on our hearts. We returned to Porto and have always felt it's a place we could retire to in the future. In a few months we'll be visiting The Azores and I feel like we're going to find it very magical. I really appreciate your insight and expertise!

    I can vouch for these guys, we have been going to the Azores for the last 20 years and spend the summers there. The climate, food, people and the beauty of the islands is so invigorating. I feel so blessed to be able to enjoy this paradise. My wife and I will be retiring there very, very soon! 👏👏👏

    Hi Carlos.
    Awesome video.
    Really enjoyed watching it.
    Congrats to the Filarmonica Lajense for it's 159 years of existence.
    My Portuguese is like yours. Lol.
    I left in 1969 when I was 15.
    I was there last year in July and August with my son, daughter, their spouses and my grandkids.
    First time ever for them. They all ❤ it.
    Um abraco.

    The main Issue in Pico is definitely finding skilled tradesmen. The construction business is booming on the island so to find someone to do work on your property in a timely manner is difficult. Even finding a plumber on an emergency basis is difficult. It helps to know someone that knows someone or hopefully you can repair problems yourself. Bricodutra is helpful in answering questions.

      @@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 It seems to me the more the islands are promoted, the more strained the problem will become. Those with the most money will buy the help, everyone else is shut out. Then labor rates jump significantly and then all the basic prices shoot up. It won't be long before the Azores go the way of Madeira and that is not a good thing, in my opinion. If you want to preserve the islands and the lifestyle, the Minister of Economics and Labor Policy need to jump start an apprentice and training program before more Expats come in and muck up the whole system, IMHO.

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@montgomeryclark7531 I think that would be a very good idea if the portuguese gov’t could implement an apprentice program! With having feet on the ground the positive side is we are seeing more Portuguese opening and expanding their businesses.

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@montgomeryclark7531 There is definitely a lot of room for improvement when it comes to the countries overall system, this labor problem needs to be addressed sooner than later. I also hope that it doesn't become Madeira, I personally believe that it will not, being more in the north Atlantic might help in this area. I guess only time will tell. I like the apprentice & training programs are a great idea. Take good care Montgomery!

      @@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 As a newly retired person looking into the future, I would like to settle on a location that has excellent medical care. If you ever did a video on the Top 5 Challenges of the Azores, the lack of hospitals would probably be among them. Is there any reason to hope/expect a hospital will open in the Triangle anytime soon? Please find a way to be hopeful on this front! 😉Maybe it's just me, but I think to grow an more affluent Senior base, this is essential. Thanks for your time. PS -- Is there an English newspaper / online source that you'd recommend?

    Enjoy your channel. My wife and I visited Sao Miguel in October 2022 and we loved it. Hopefully we can come back and visit the triangle islands my wife and I both have a connection there as both of our great grandparents emigrated from the Azores to Hawaii to work in the sugar plantations. You may have heard that many Portuguese emigrated from the Azores and Madeira to Hawaii in the late 1800s to the early 1900s

Hope to see you on the islands.Take good care!

    When I retire in just under 3 years, I will be moving from Ireland to Ecuador...basically for the very same reasons as people are moving to the Azores: the climate, the people, the food, wine and off course because it's cheaper than Northern Europe....
    IF however, I somehow, could find a good rental in the Azores as well, then maybe I could split my retirement between the 2 places which both seems to be the most healthy (bio diverse) on our planet and, without having to spend the millions I don't have anyway.
    I just spent time in Sao Miguel and will be back on the islands again soon..
    There actually are some similarities between Ecuador and the Azores as well and, the people in the two places, are not that different either (lovely)...and, then off course both the Pacific and the Atlantic to call home...what else would I want 😊!?
    Being European, I can move to the Azores quite easily..Ecuador takes a bit more but, not difficult at all....
    Thanks a lot for sharing...

    Hello! I am following you two on YT and thanks for all information. Maybe you have said that previously but I did not catch: Does the Azores protects the islands against overpopulation/construction? I am afraid of all this fame to become an enemy of this paradise. I would love to become one of your neighbors sometime, but I hope this migration is controlled.

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, glad you enjoy the channel. We believe there is good protection against over population. Most of the 9 islands have low population in big open spaces, a lot of the higher areas of the island are protected as nature reserves, etc. For example, Pico is the 2nd largest island and it only has 15,000 people. As for expats in the Azores; its only 1.6%. I hope this helps. Cheers
