It's common knowledge in canadian border towns that the police in the USA can confiscate any cash you have on you and take money out of your credit card account. It is on you to prove the money is yours and not a proceeds of crime. One of the rumors is it will cost 10 grand to fight it in court so most people just give up and go home. Even if the officer made that mistake in the field, it should have been quickly caught and rectified at the station. And they wonder why so many people hate cops. Furthermore, even if she were guilty, the fact that they're treating inmates that way is wholly unacceptable.
No settlement. Take this straight to court and petition to even have every officer involved, especially Peter, lose qualified immunity. He has lost all defense as a man, a human being, a citizen of the United States and especially for conduct completely unbecoming of an officer. He needs to be personally held accountable for this. He needs to be fired, arrested, and sued for kidnapping, false imprisonment, and filing a false report. There needs to be severe consequences for this sort of thing.
If you're taking it straight to court, you have to allow him a defense and you shouldn't say that all those things need to be done unless he is actually found guilty.

It's also weird how they treat civilians like that but are too polite to speak up and correct one another. "Nah! I don't want to give old buddy boy a hard time, he's got enough on his plate."
Saw something where it was said her brother was a policeman. The number of times that they repeatedly ignored all signs that they had the wrong person suggests to me that she was targeted as an attack or to send a message to her brother that they can do this to his sister. They found a warrant for someone with a close enough name to be able to arrest her days before Christmas and hold her over that period intentionally.
They originally stopped her because someone In Harris County attached her actual picture to the warrant but none of the other info matched age or what not. Her brother is a cop in Georgia and called them to tell them they had the wrong person and urged them to do the right thing.
As a former police officer, this story is absolutely upsetting to me. During my tenure, when there is a dispute regarding an arrest, i would exhausted efforts at confirming the identity of the suspected. Its the right thing to do. I hope Jennifer sues them into the ground. These Broward cops were lazy. I have personally had 4 encounters with BSO officers over a 30yr time frame, 3 instances while i was at work. They are "extremely" difficult to talk to, and order ppl to do things in a manner that makes them pretend they are the final say. And that blue wall of bulls**t protects "peter."
Unfortunately, some police departments hire personnel who read at a third grade level with equal comprehension. In my past, I met a woman who would make extra money on the side by taking classes for PO's online. The pay was good at the time, $500 per course, I'm sure it's more now. I was curious about how it worked, and she was overscheduled at the time, so I offered to lighten her load by taking one of the law enforcement training courses for her, as she was already busy doing several others. But I didn't ask to be paid (and was not paid) I just was curious and thought it was a challenge. I aced that course - it was a basic psychology class, I even wrote a couple of essays. I have no idea who the police officer was who was getting credit for the course, but I know he or she passed with flying colors and is probably at least a Sergeant or Lieutenant by now. Evidently you don't have to be well educated to advance as a PO anymore. Just sneaky enough and willing to cheat but not get caught. After helping my new acquaintance with her little side gig that one time - I was NOT interested in doing it again. It makes me uncomfortable to know that not only does this kind of thing exist, but it's quite common.
Not only is it the right thing to do when double checking a suspect's identity, it's their fkn job to do so. I've never in my life heard of any sht like this. Absolutely appalling. This is why cops aren't trusted in the community.
I have a friend who had a medical incident while driving shortly after being let out of the hospital. When he called the police, they said he was DUI and threw him into jail for 5 days without ever taking him to a medical clinic or doing any sort of medical evaluation. This is a very hard-working guy, but with some very mild cognitive issues, who is essentially homeless and lives out of his car--- which he uses extensively for work. This is essentially ruining his life and he has become suicidal. I have helped him file a complaint. I used to have respect for the police, but after incidents like this I have now become extremely suspicious of them. Dr. Grande--- if you want more details I will be happy to provide them.
I had a very similar experience a few years ago. No record, not even a traffic ticket and yet I was held in jail for five days. One of the most disorienting and traumatic experiences of my life.
They should have run her fingerprints since there was a discrepancy with her driver's license. It's unacceptable that no one was punished. If I had made a mistake like this as a nurse, I would have gotten a written warning, even if no one was harmed. Since detention threatens lives, police officers who don't verify identities properly should be punished, and be fired if they repeat the behavior.
You understand why it happens out of spite rather than just Peter protecting his ego of insisting on going forward with the arrest when he knew the suspects details were inaccurate, though. It'd be more like Peter didn't feel like he receives adequate regard from the citizens he deals with combined with the feelings that the support from his superiors whenever he relied on them was never available, has influenced how he passive aggressively acts in his Police work..

Several of these experiences were for child support, I even lost a truck driving job because after I had paid child support the records were falsely showing they were unpaid. Florida suspended my Class A CDL license several times and I was let go. One time I even had the receipt and showed it to a police officer. He said "sorry, my hands are tied". Late 70's on the coast so a lot of party drugs going on. Surfers and their BS (PLOT TWIST my dad was a surfer). Later, I ended up with a brother-in-law cop working at the University of Florida who said he didn't know what weed smelled like. A campus cop who is unfamiliar with the smell of burning cannabis. Hmm. Anyway, punchline his wife my sister-in-law (my wife's sister) smoked pot in the backyard while he slept, or did. She divorced him for being an abusive alcoholic lol. Filmed himself ordering the 5yo to fetch his bottle of Fireball from the freezer. All he needed was a bowlful of ammo and a pistol lying on the coffee table to win the grand prize but that prize went to husband #2 who while not a cop had guns with silencers hidden in the attic and was sexting the neighbor's teen daughter who saved them and walked over with her mom to show them to my SIL while the dude was at the park with the kids. lol. Furthermore, even if she were guilty, the fact that they're treating inmates that way is wholly unacceptable.
No settlement. Take this straight to court and petition to even have every officer involved, especially Peter, lose qualified immunity.

Yes dude. Any normal employee at any company would be fired. No qualified immunity. You still have to pay attention and do quality work.
