    Unbelievably dangerous to go down into a slurry pit after sucking and mixing slurry due to slurry gases, get rid of that paddle system and use a pump agitator to mix when needed.

    Interesting video. Not one of the fun jobs on the farm but necessary. So glad you mentioned the dangers of pit gases. Family farmers in Ohio, USA ,a father and 3 sons have huge dairy. They had a pit issue. The 3 sons were all overcome by the gas and all 3 died! It's a very dangerous situation. So glad you are aware!! Stay safe.

    Since everyone has the answer to this I’m going to offer mine as well. Raise the pump up higher so that the sheer bolt connection isn’t actually down in the pit. Then with the cover on it would be much easier to notice in your mirrors when moving around with the tractor. My other idea is a 90 degree gearbox so that the motor was under the floor but above the pit of muck.

    • @diegoFortMagic
      @diegoFortMagic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I was going to suggest welding something on the blade shaft close to the shear bolt so you can lift the blade without havong to empty the pit, easy improvement, but your suggestion is a much better long term solution. Specially if you put the shear bolt on the horizontal axis before the gearbox, that way the blade does not fall if the bolt breaks, easy fix if the shear bolt has easy access from the top with a panel or something.

    For 20 years I was a hog farmer! Worked my way up on various farms from "shit shoveler" to farm manager and owner/operator! When I was the farm manager one of my jobs was to run the "honey wagon" ! My tractor and vacuum tank were about the same size as the one you are using! The neighboring land owner had a problem with alkali that killed the soil in part of his field, he had me spread loads of "liquid gold" all year in that one area (this was a weekly job). The following year, that dead spot produced a bumper crop of wheat!!

    The first pig farm I worked on (late '80's) was an international company, we had 3 people die when they went down into the pit to unclog one of the vacuum out pipes. Pit gas is SO scary. Please, please, PLEASE be careful. Many years later (and a different farm that I was working on as a farrowing tech, the owner wanted to "stir" up the pit and was blowing back the load he had just vacuumed out. He wasnt paying attention and was blowing air into the full pit. 6 of the 12 sows and their litters in that farrowing room were killed. I was screaming mad at him because I was suppose to be processing litters in that room but went for an early lunch break that day. The Lord saved me from certain death that day.

    • @Sarge084

      An easier way would have been to install a macerator pump to empty the chamber into the slurry tank, then fill the spreadee tanker from the slurry tank.
      If it really is necessary to transfer from the slurry tank to the chamber a standpipe would have been a damn sight easier than opening the chamber access lid and creating a safety hazard every time.
