Best way to photograph woodpeckers: go someplace there are woodpeckers! Otherwise you are baiting them, which is unethical. Birds use the availability of food as a cue to migrate. Providing food can cause them to miss a migration window. I put out a feeder for one day every 14 days so as to not mess up migration. Don't take feeding advice from someone who sells bird seed.
