I’m a 77 year old bogey golfer living in the U.S. Purchased 8, 9, PW and GW Black Ops several weeks ago. They exceed expectations! Best irons I’ve ever played!
Look like a great club and agree most players should drop the ego and play with these type of irons. Would be better that you disclose in pxg reviews you are sponsored by them.
This review is spot on. Bought these clubs and they are the best feeling, best sounding, best performing irons I have ever hit. Since they are cast they are a bit more affordable, too. PXG knocked it out of the park with these.
Game improvement for average golfers? Sounds like good advice to me. My buddy and his Eleven hybrid set is dangerous now! He is a totally a new golfer, a better golfer. Those work like a champ for him. Another guy in my foursome uses Cleveland XL HALO irons. Stunning. I say, if you can make the game easier, do it. Years ago, I dropped using my driver and long irons. I now have a 3W (using it as a driver) down to 11W (all are shallow faced). That transformed my game. I found an old Ray Cook mallet M1 putter (had one over 40yrs ago). Added a new grip and putting extremely well. Just use whatever gives YOU an advantage. Enjoy golf again!
Not sure GI irons are for everyone. With a players iron, you'll be punished for poor strikes (not as much as you think), and rewarded for good strikes. With GI irons, you MIGHT be helped on poorer strikes, but you MIGHT be punished on a good strike (fliers). I've found that as you become better with ball striking, GI irons are actually LESS forgiving on front/back dispersion, and players irons become MORE forgiving in that regard. GI improvement irons also tend to be heavily offset - not great if you have a left miss
100% I had the ping g430 irons and they were fantastic but like you say as I got better they were costing me shots, switched to srixon zx5mk2 and was way more consistent.
1wfunston1: And not all players can benefit from pure blades either. In fact most can’t. As a life long 5 handicap boomer, I started with blades (1965(?) Hogan Apex) and until about 8 years ago played nothing but pure blades. Feel, turf interaction, ball control and slim sexy looks I argued. We great (in our own minds - after all only 8% of golfers ever break 80) golfers scoffed at garden tool Pings (the first “GI” iron.) My last blades, Mizuno MP5, to me were the prettiest looking and softest feeling irons ever. Yet as a 5 hc, I could hit fades, draws, second groove stingers, etc but consistency as most mid single handicappers can attest to, is a problem. First I’d like to say that golfers who can take advantage of the full benefits of a blade are few, very few. Secondly age takes its toll and my 108 club speed is down below 100. So 8 years ago I got a set of Ping Rapture J2 irons (the “J”apan model has less offset) and I can do just about anything my blades did and the fat ugly sole (bloated overall) didn’t cause as much turf interaction problems as expected, especially on tight lies. And the forgiveness! I couldn’t believe how easy they are to hit; almost like cheating on muddy ground. As a 70 year old 5 handicapper, I wish I had played forgiving irons earlier - even as far back as the (80’s) Ping Eye 2’s that I laughed at back then. There are golfers who can strike a dime sized sweet spot nearly every time (a 5 can’t) but those guys are near scratch or better and represent less than 3% of golfers. But in the end, whatever gives you comfort and confidence at address. Fairways and Greens! PenguinGolf 12/25/24
@@jamestown4867 I totally agree, most players will not benefit from pure blades - just as much as I disagree with the title of the video, which my initial comment was directed at. I think for a lot of players, there is a nice middle ground in "players irons" where the sweet spot is larger than on a pure blade, but you still get the same/similar consistency, but maybe not quite the same feel. Fair trade-off in my opinion. Of course this is all anecdotal. Each golfer will have different needs and preferences. I'm just challenging the statement that GI irons are best for 99% of golfers
You’ve lost me after a ridiculous statement like this. They are quite simply a game improvement club. They’re very ugly with massive offset. Contracted to PXG and that’s the only reason you’re saying what you are in this video. Disappointing.

I'm a higher handicapper, & had the 0211xcor2 irons previously, have not got a set of these, & they are so good, have now also got the hybrid, fairway woods including driver to round off the full set. The whole black ops range is absolutely amazing..
I have a fairly common miss toward the toe or low (especially on my longer irons), so last year, I put ego aside and bought into the game improvement iron marketing and got some G430s. I had a honeymoon period for a few months, but after a while, I really found myself not enjoying the look or feel, the excess offset, the occasional fliers that would go much longer than they should, and the lack of spin and overall control. This year, I bought a combo set of 770s and 7CBs. Yes, I’m still in the honeymoon phase with them, but wow, the difference is sublime. When you hit a good one, it just puts a smile on your face. Even the not so great ones don’t have near the drop off that marketing would have you believe. I don’t care if my game turns to absolute dog poo, I’ll never go back to game improvement irons.
I just got fitted for gen 7 players irons w an xp 4 iron. The size for me are already confidence inspiring (compact but not on the smaller side). I could easily game the black ops but you have to love what you play and for me I prefer the p and xp a little bit more. Also a small tip. Go get fitted. They have a few more shaft options available than show online (which I got a no upcharge shaft that were not available online kbs $ taper)
Maybe I didn't catch it, but were those regular shafts or stiff? Sounds intriguing, and my son is a former military and a firefighter so will get a discount if he buys them...
I am going to add this to my list of irons for next year. Good review. Correction to your specs. The Xcore foam is from prior generation. As only the Gen7 have the new xcore material. One question, it appears to have quite a bit of offset, do you struggle keeping this from going left? I need the extra distance from a game improvement iron, but I hit the ball straight, and to much offset just causes me to have try to hold off the on the swing to that I don’t go left.

Thanks Andy - i like that you make me think differently, but I rarely act on it . . . makes me ask if i really want forgiveness as opposed to the clubs I love to hit purely . . . . I just need to save up and have three sets of irons, one would be blades - obviously
Have you tried the Tour Edge E723 game improvement irons? They look similar to the PXG in terms of hollow core with filling. I only started playing golf a couple of months ago and bought a set of the Tour Edge. I really like them. Weirdly they are a pretty big company in America but nobody seems to use them in the UK.
I'm not Andy, but I've owned the 0211 xcor2 irons for a year and I recently got to hit the black ops during a refitting. They are VERY similar. Almost indistinguishable. The BO was slightly larger with a thicker top line and slightly chunkier bottom. Strikes felt identical between the two. The BO was definitely more forgiving. Even mis-hits wanted to go straight. I'd say roughly 30% more forgiving and 30% less workable than my 0211. The BO irons are most definitely the successor to the 0211s. Instead of aiming for a set in the dead middle of hcp ability, they are firmly aimed at high hcp golfers now. (I'm a 13 hcp for reference)
I just checked PXG's website and the 211 irons are gone! They were a good value at $99 per club. Even less if you were a veteran. Bummer... I waited too long to buy them.
I can't give up Andy. If you strengthen your gap wedge to hit say 125 and you hit your lob wedge say 80 like me. The gap is still 45. The answer is to carry another gap wedge no matter how you look at it. You might drop a long iron. Now I give up.....unless 😊
I went for a PXG iron fitting last week. I went in there telling the fitter that I was interested in the Black Ops irons (based solely on price). I was swinging the 7 iron around +/- 80 mph. I really wanted the Black Ops but, based upon the data and playing around with different graphite shafts, my numbers were the best with the Gen 7 XP irons.
@@TheAverageGolfer I need your opinion. I currently have PXG 0211 DC irons (2021 model). As I mentioned I went for a PXG iron fitting and Gen 7 XP performed best. Currently the PXG Gen 6 irons are still on sale for less than Gen 7's (~$310 savings for a set of 6-GW). I'm looking to save some money. What's your thoughts on going from my 0211's to the Gen 6 in terms of performance? I'm looking to save some money.
Too big and bulky for me, but difficult to argue with the figures. Of course I would prefer more spin, even at 28 degrees that spin is a bit low, but that may say more about Andy's swing than the club. However with good peak height and descent angle a ball hit with a 7i will stop reasonably quickly unless you are on hard summer links greens - although right now with some of the weather close to me, everything is stopping quickly!
@TheAverageGolfer I am absolutely certain that these would help me - I play off 8 - but for me, the way clubs look is a big part of my enjoyment of the game.
I have the answer for you! If these companies like PXG and Ping made their Black ops and G irons with low offset (Straight neck) versions, 90% of golfers could and would game them. Anyone that hits a draw can't use these because everything goes left. Communicate to PXG to make a low offset version and they will sell a ton!
Andy pxg claim the feel might be better than forged - does that mean you can chip with the short irons or does the ball fly of the face like most other GI irons ?
How would you combo set PXG’s in the top of the bag because of the loft change? Meaning, let’s say I hit the 0311 6p well but the 5 is hard, so do I go 5xp or 6xp and carry two 6’s? Thanks
Tough question because ideally you would want to try both and not just hit 7 iron, I wished manufacturers would have access to all heads in an iron set
Surprise! PXG. Try the Delta XT from Benross as a comparison. Full set for less than £500. Go on Andy! The reason these aren't for everyone is because if your 7 iron flies over 170 yards you'll need four or five wedges.
You need 14 clubs to cover the shortest yardage to the longest relative to your swing speed, this will not change irrelevant of how far you hit a 7 iron? A pro hits a 7 iron over 200 carry….how many wedges do they need?
@@TheAverageGolfer Tommy Fleetwood hits 7i 186 yards Andy but he hits PW 145, which is what the average golfer hits an 8 or 7 iron. If the average golfer hits this PW say 140 that leaves a lot of gaps to fill. I've enjoyed so much of what you've done Andy but the PXG thing has been a bit much for me. Good luck in everything you do.
That's a disappointing answer Andy. Tommy hits his gap wedge 125 and his lob wedge 100. How far do you hit your gap wedge and lob wedge? 💡 If like me you hit a gap wedge 100 that leaves 40 yards of gap to fill, which is 2 extra clubs. You're welcome. It's a well known problem with "powerbats".
Had a PXG fitting for irons at their new HO in UK - Gen6 - stuck with them for a few weeks but sold them at a large loss a few weeks back - kept the driver and the wedges but irons second set I have had and sold them both - as did a good mate - both gone back to Mizzies - end of story!
Can you explain why? Especially as they were fitted for you. I’ve had two fittings recently Mizuno 925’s and Callaway Ai300. The mizunos out on the range the Callaway indoors only. Mush happier with the Mizunos but hope to try 3-4 other sets out and eventually a head to head comparison before I invest
@@guyr7351 good question - they felt harsh (really harsh) even with the occasional good strike - for me personally it is about feel and shorter irons especially I just did not get that feel! Even went back and tried others after being convinced it was a matter of time and that eventually these would be better for me. Came from set of Miura and wanted a bit more help but seriously now looking at some older Mizuno muscle backs - PXG not for me and best advice is go to agnostic fitter not a brand 👍
Just playing devils advocate here, but if this is as good as you say, good feel , good launch, good distance, forgiving, surely that’s what every golfer wants, is this in your bag ?
@@2ScentsWorth no I fall into the 1% 😂 you right it’s a serious question that o ask myself, why do I play irons that are less forgiving than these, my truthful answer is about feel and profile but not performance 👍
@@TheAverageGolfer I can’t see the irons for sale here anywhere is Australia. Basing it off the woods. The drivers are $100 more expensive than titleist/Ping and the fairway/hybrid are about $50 more. While better pricing from PXG than I’ve seen in the past, they’re still the most expensive here.
Really ,,, I would take everything said here with a grain of salt. He hits a seven iron 170 yards ?? ,,, I can assure you senior golfers that can hit a seven iron 170 yards are few ( very few ) and far between. The individual flogging these irons is well beyond the average ( senior ) golfer. I'm not knocking the irons by any means, PXG has excellent golf clubs and for the most part at better prices than the " big names ". Here's my point, not a single word about the most important component ( in my humble opinion ) the GOLF SHAFT !! ,,, that's it in a nutshell. All the marketing, gimmicks etc. etc. when you really want " performance " it about the shaft and that's it. Ask yourself ,, in the past 25 - 30 years how much has the head of a golf iron changed ?? It's changed but not significantly. Then ask yourself the same question about the golf shaft.
my experience is they are significantly more forgiving and the feel of the face is amazing. The sound and feel is better the Xcor2 IMO. Get fit of course, and you will not regret. Also purchased the Black ops 7 wood and 9 wood, which are proving to be very good for this 68 year old slower swinging golfer. Hope this helps!

The top line on these irons looks terrible. It really would be tough to play a round having to look at that. Although, I tried them out at a fitting a couple weeks ago. And they may be the most forgiving irons I have ever hit.
Guys will buy anything to make themselves look better. I believe co-forged irons should be illegal. Forged CB/MB tells the truth and nothing but the truth, with traditional lofts. Why bother deceiving yourself.
I know your sponsored now by pxg, but why don’t you compare the black ops to other brands with the same or similar clubs? This channel went from reviews to oh look how amazing PXG is now. I’m not sponsored and I built a set of Xcor2 irons. I like them but I would compare the p790, Callaway ai smoke iron, cobra dark speed and the T350 to it. Then allow us to judge which performs better or makes us want to go hit and compare for ourselves. Other than that yes the black ops look good and from the video sound amazing. I haven’t hit them yet but why when I have a set of 0211 Xcor2s. Also veterans and first responders, I recommend you check out PXG for the simple fact we get a huge discount. That’s including fittings also. Find the closest store and test them. Also the black ops will be cheaper for you as well, if your not grab a buddy and see if they will make a profile for you to use.
I like this comment because it shows the frailties of you tube, next week I review a driver from a brand I have never tested before…..it’s incredible and I don’t compare it too anything else but I won’t hear from you 😂 I’ll keep doing me bud and take it as you wish 👍

How would you combo set PXG’s in the top of the bag because of the loft change? Meaning, let’s say I hit the 0311 6p well but the 5 is hard, so do I go 5xp or 6xp and carry two 6’s? Thanks
Btw the black ops seem amazing too for irons
Tough question because ideally you would want to try both and not just hit 7 iron, I wished manufacturers would have access to all heads in an iron set
@ appreciate the reply and honest answer 🤙🏽
Surprise!
@@colinbrown1321 isn’t it the same gaps that Tommy Fleetwood has to fill 😂 you’re argument is seriously flawed Colin and makes zero sense
That's a disappointing answer Andy. Tommy hits his gap wedge 125 and his lob wedge 100. How far do you hit your gap wedge and lob wedge? 💡
If like me you hit a gap wedge 100 that leaves 40 yards of gap to fill, which is 2 extra clubs. You're welcome. It's a well known problem with "powerbats".
@@colinbrown1321 your gap wedge loft would be relative to the strong lofted 7 iron Colin 🤯 jeeez I give up
hmm, could it be a PXG iron
Nope guess again 🙄
Is it accurate and can you shape shots?
Yes and yes
Had a PXG fitting for irons at their new HO in UK - Gen6 - stuck with them for a few weeks but sold them at a large loss a few weeks back - kept the driver and the wedges but irons second set I have had and sold them both - as did a good mate - both gone back to Mizzies - end of story!
Oh no Alan that’s not good!
@@TheAverageGolfer yep agree - watch you avidly and PXG just doesn’t work for me - get down to Sunningdale Heath great Harry Colt course 👍👍😀
@@alanhopkins4879 I will be down there next year 👍
@@guyr7351 good question - they felt harsh (really harsh) even with the occasional good strike - for me personally it is about feel and shorter irons especially I just did not get that feel! Even went back and tried others after being convinced it was a matter of time and that eventually these would be better for me. Came from set of Miura and wanted a bit more help but seriously now looking at some older Mizuno muscle backs - PXG not for me and best advice is go to agnostic fitter not a brand 👍
Looks alot like Taylormade sleath hd irons
Just playing devils advocate here, but if this is as good as you say, good feel , good launch, good distance, forgiving, surely that’s what every golfer wants, is this in your bag ?
@@2ScentsWorth no I fall into the 1% 😂 you right it’s a serious question that o ask myself, why do I play irons that are less forgiving than these, my truthful answer is about feel and profile but not performance 👍
Cant get duped by a "players" 7i if its got 4000 spin lol
I saw the PXG hat and knew it. No thanks, I’ll buy just about any other brand.
For what reason?
@@TheAverageGolferI honestly find them overrated and marketed towards people who want to brag about how much they’ve spent on clubs.
@@jflight100 but they are no more expensive than any other brand? Do you know how much these irons are?
@@TheAverageGolfer I can’t see the irons for sale here anywhere is Australia. Basing it off the woods. The drivers are $100 more expensive than titleist/Ping and the fairway/hybrid are about $50 more.
While better pricing from PXG than I’ve seen in the past, they’re still the most expensive here.
@@jflight100 therefore I think your initial comment regarding people wanting to brag about having them in the bag is based on incorrect information
How much better are these than Xcor2's
my experience is they are significantly more forgiving and the feel of the face is amazing. The sound and feel is better the Xcor2 IMO. Get fit of course, and you will not regret. Also purchased the Black ops 7 wood and 9 wood, which are proving to be very good for this 68 year old slower swinging golfer. Hope this helps!
Sorry this is just an advert
For what?
@@TheAverageGolferthe irons your hitting I suppose. I’m happy for you to promote your sponsor, no issue with it. Fair review as always 👍
@@al1356 maybe all reviews are just adverts 🤷♂️ I’ve just filmed an ‘advert’ for the new Tour Edge driver today if that’s what we are now calling a review
Left handed available? Nah...
The top line on these irons looks terrible.
It really would be tough to play a round having to look at that.
Although, I tried them out at a fitting a couple weeks ago. And they may be the most forgiving irons I have ever hit.
Nice to get feedback from someone who has tried them

It’s one word ya clown 🤡
Pretty sure your hat gave it away lol
I wear the same hat in tonight’s video reviewing an Axis 1 putter…..please explain?
Guys will buy anything to make themselves look better. I believe co-forged irons should be illegal. Forged CB/MB tells the truth and nothing but the truth, with traditional lofts. Why bother deceiving yourself.
@@russellkempe3231 or maybe just enjoy yourself and be happy…..you sound like a moron
@@TheAverageGolfer ok that made me giggle lol
@@TheAverageGolfer what do you mean you won’t hear from me? I watch your videos and have gone and hit irons because of your videos, I don’t mind you make just a product video but are you going to make a video showing the difference? Or you leaving that to the general public to go out and test for themselves? Some just want to see the comparison, others will go out. I’m not dogging you at all but it does seem slightly more biased to pxg.
I believe they added teachers to their "first responder" list just this past week.
@@zachgates19 I purposely don’t compare to other brands because of the obvious shouts of biased Zach, I opt to present factual data and let the viewer decide if it works for them or not
