      He also sold off probation (privatised) which was a disaster leaving unsupervised criminals amongst us and our children .It was so bad that it had to be brought back into public ownership at a cost of hundreds of millions of tax payers money.

      Which was pointless even if they did have the ships. Not expanding the infrastructure at the ports added to the extended time to pass customs they wouldn't have been able to make use of them anyway

    A friend of mine is a lorry driver he uses these ports every week. He says the last time dover was updated was in the 1980's He also says comming back in the UK from France is a breze because the French ports are up to date and designed to cope with large amounts of traffic.

      As soon as you pass the French side with everything nice and glittery and when reaching the English side it looks run down. I believe this is true not only at Dover all their stations through to Parise are also nice and glittery. But all the stations through to London look run down. Is it not true that the EU subsidize the French side with money from Treasure Island. We were in the EU at that time and as usual we got nothing.

    I’m a registered nurse soon to have no fixed abode. I’m getting a divorce and I’m going to have to move into a vehicle to keep my head above water. I simply cannot run a house on my own with these staggering increases in our costs of living. I won’t be the only one having to resort to this. It’s a disgrace. I have a degree in nursing- it means nothing

    As has been said by many - "The Brexit voters have got their wish. The free movement of people into and out of the UK has been achieved" Problem is it applies fully to UK citizens too. Once the luddites realise that we are now an external entity to the EU France is obliged to protect the EU's borders , just as Spain, Portugal, Italy ...etc. are. I wonder how easy it is for non-UK residents coming into the UK ? Oh .. but of course that is different .......

    Speaking to Tory voters the other day and their primary concern, during this period of constant crisis, is still... immigration. Not the cost of living, the NHS, the cronyism and corruption in govt, not the environment it's all still about foreign people.

      The Tories handed out 1M visas to foreigners in 2021. 3.5 million extra population in the last ten years. 3.5 million people cost a lot. Big strain on the NHS, infrastructure, environment, housing, schools etc etc.

    Fought through the absolute nightmare of Folkestone eurotunnel on the weekend. Long story short - it took 8 hours to travel 70 miles from home, sit in endless queues, pass border controls (all booths fully manned note), wait to get on a train to Calais. Then drove 530 miles accross France to our holiday destination also in 8 hours. This is the same journey we've done for 5 previous years pre covid and we have never experienced anything like this at Folkestone even in peak holiday season before Wrexit. But of course... Its all the fault of the French.

    I remember waiting to exit passport control in the USA a few years back ,extremely frustrated with the length of time it was taking .The queue was long the staffing levels were way too small.
    Looking at the US citizens control ,no problem ,staffed adequetly ,no queues and running smoothly .We are a third country now this is and will be the norm for many years to come.

    My small take on this as a British citizen living in the EU (yes, it was three years of nail biting anxiety for us too)
    There will never be accountability until the British media, especially the tabloids are reined in.
    Whatever the Tory politicians say, they know that they will be defended & blunders & ignorance forgotten.
    An honest media and proportional representation replacing an out of date electoral system combined is the ONLY way out.

    It is not the French responsibility to build more infrastructure to cope with the extra bureaucracy that is coming from Brexit.

      The French are investing in biometric scanners at Calais. When they come into operation French immigration checks in Dover will end.
      It will require everyone to leave their vehicles and go to the scanner building.
      They cannot make this work as quick as the old border.
      As far as they are concerned….we voted to turn an Internal EU border into a much slower international one.
      There where advantages to EU membership which brexiteers refuse to accept.

      @@verystripeyzebra There isn't any issue of illegal immigration from the UK to France, they are controlling their border already. The backlogs are on the UK side so the timeliness of people going through slower is hurting people here, not in France. It's a purely British problem.

    I am happy to go through the cross border checks despite not voting for Brexit . Those complaining about delays getting into the EU need to pull their fingers out and get used to the reality of their actions .

    I needed an airbag sensor for my car and it took 2 weeks to arrive from Germany. The Mercedes’ dealer said it used to take 48 hours before Brexit. Although it’s just a minor inconvenience for me I can imagine the damage this has done to Just In Time manufacturing here in the UK.

      To start with, I will charitably advance you a lesson in the English language :
      1. I believe you mean "in turn", not "intern. An intern is a student or trainee who works, sometimes without pay, in order to gain work experience or satisfy requirements for a qualification.
      2. It's "theirs" not "there's".
      Now to the substantive point, yet again :
      If the French are going to make visitors wait 6 hours at its border just because they are from a non-EU country then non-EU tourists will not want to holiday in France, and non-EU businesses will not want to do business in France. Either France wants to be an open global player, or it wants to be North Korea. It's that simple.

    checking lorries at Dover (or any border) is, according to WTO rules, what you MUST do UNLESS you are in a customs Union. We used to be in a customs union before Brexit. And if that Bill about Northern Ireland becomes law we will be thrown out of the WTO for breaking the rules.

    I've just spoken to Dominic Raab (who is an expert on matters geographical) and he has confirmed for me, as he had previously confirmed to J R-M, that Calais is on the English side of the Channel and Le Dover is on the French side. So, that makes J R-M correct about where the delays would be, doesn't it. We've really stuck it to the French with Brexit, haven't we! Or is my brain suffering a serious loss of freedom of movement?

      Now can Britain exit a market and cut all ties? Of course it can, any country has that right to do what they think is best for their country. But if you were entangled with other countries through a common set of rules then untangling can get messy quick. Still doable but here is the part that will fail and will hurt, no doubt you have noticed by now.
      Here it comes: you just lost ALL benefits of that entanglement, the common market. All nice things you kinda relied on over the years that made trade and travel easy? You just threw it away and you have to deal with it. Did the conservatives lie to you about keeping those benefits? Your problem, not Europe's. Deal with you own mess you have created and you were warned for what would happen if you did.
      So can brexit be done? Yes. Can it be done as sold to you? No.
      Who is to blame? Your conservative lying party and all its members who played you like the fools you are and you can blame yourselves for not listening to all the information that was shared with you about the downsides of brexit.

My prediction and it was part of my argument against Brexit to anyone I knew, was that Scotland and N Ireland will leave the Union, and depending on how it goes maybe Wales too. The latest NI elections show that it is just a matter of time before a reunification referendum is called for in NI. The DUP are losing the argument and especially so when they have been sold out by Johnson and his sycophants.

    Since 2010 we’ve had successive Governments with absolutely no idea how to run a country. All the expense spend on them for their education and they know nothing.

      This misunderstanding is all yours.
      I am not telling anyone what to do with their borders.
      However, countries that want my business need to be diplomatic and welcoming, and that includes fast and efficient transit through passport control and customs, or I shall go elsewhere.
      The French appear to be having problems in this respect, which is why I'll be holidaying in Florida again this year.

    Great show this morning The JRM bit was brilliant and funny. It's now easier and quicker to get from Calais to Dover in a dinghy. Many the uk government could ask the people smugglers if they could help them with the Dover to Calais backlog.😁

      For a start he has been doing some diplomatic schmoozing, so I guess not being belligerent will be a start, he is also suggesting vet agreements which will ease the paperwork requirements. In all I think he'll be heading for more alignment, and as people see and like the results, then a customs union, head towards single market and ultimately rejoin.
      But he needs to not threaten brexit, or we'll end up in the polarised mess that got us into this mess in the first place.

    I went across this border so many times to Dunkirk. The French never held me up pre Brexit. The delays were at the uk border in Dunkirk where the nicest UK staff went through all the rigmarole. Now we have it both sides. There are you tube videos of 1950’s lorries going through all these hoops pre EU . Could not someone have shown these plonkers those? If you are a politician I suppose you can only blame someone else? Failing Grayling and the whole mob inc version 3.0 Truss .
