Love Hannah Coulter! Huge Wendell Berry fans over here. (We named all our kids after Wendell Berry characters ha!) Excited to put these others on my list! Thanks for sharing.

YES! Supper of the Lamb! Such a forgotten and under read book. So happy to see some of my favorites on this list, especially that one. Thank you!

Just found your channel. Happily subscribed. 😊 Looking for more of this kind of content.
I have 3 daughters, 1 son and someone or someones on the way. Lol Not sure yet but our youngest 2 are twins.
Sadly though, I have 3 nieces, maybe 4 who are all different ages ranging from 27 to 13. None of them are interested in having children. Unfortunately, I'm the only homeschool mom in our family. I'm also on the opposite coast of Florida and don't have regular access to them. What it made me realize though is how that's an intentional product of the modern culture.
I was really excited to hear you speak about Hannah Coulter. I wasn't exposed to books like that as a girl but I definitely want to share things like this with my children and the young ladies in our family. I do remember reading Janette Oke Love Comes Softly series. My mother loved it and shared it with me.
Unfortunately, after she and my dad divorced I think she was lonely and also periodically read romantic penny novels. They weren't racy but they certainly weren't the beautiful depictions I've come to love in books like Little House in the Big Woods.
I'm even excited to checkout the "cookbook"! 😄
So thank you for sharing these and giving a synopsis. I'm building my library and it really is helpful more than you know.

Loved Hannah Coulter! It was my first Berry novel. Until recently I had only read his essays and poetry.

I read amusing ourselves to death a few years back and right after read the colliding of the American mind and those books were fascinating to read back to back. I started Hannah C a few years back and could not get into it and was just looking at it the other day thinking I need to try to finish it because everyone raves about it.

Coddling of the American Mind is SO good. I want to do a Mother Culture video on books to read to understand how we got to this point and that one would definitely be in it. Have you read The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self? Also fantastic in that very sad way.
Hannah C! It is *slow*. But you gotta keep going. It's worth it.

I haven't read it yet but have it on my shelf to read! Getting through the living page first!

Thank you for sharing these recommendations. As child I never read and now as I am trying to give my children the education I wish I had it adds another level of difficulty. I hope and pray God will help me cultivate a love of reading for my sake and my children's sake.
Side note...would you share a link for your dress?

I think many of us are trying to educate feeling like we're a bit handicapped by our own education, but, books! Books are the key!

@@thecommonplacehomeschool I love lists!! Don't we all lol I want library book recommendations with editions you motivated me to build my own library! I love books and reading to my children so please add what books are " your library" worthy so I can take them into consideration! I really appreciate your channel. Charlotte mason seems to fit for me. We have been homeschooling a month. So still some figuring things out on my part but these videos are helpful. I am reading the read aloud family/watching your TH-cam. I was at first intimidated by Charlotte and her practicality for my family. Don't laugh seemed so serious! I think I'm seeing some amazing ways to learn with my children and grow a bond over the love for books! Thanks again sorry for my rant!

Rats, my TBR list is already stacked high! But these sound sooo good! Especially Amusing Ourselves.... Oh well. What's a few more, right?

I like to think of my book list and piles as a door to humility because I'll never be able to read them all or know the wisdom within each one. ;)
But yes, it's just *one* more.

When do you make time to read all these books? I would love to read more, but I find that I almost never have a quiet moment to do so when I’m not catching up on house work and such.

So, I listened to Hannah Coulter after hearing all the hype and just didn't love it. It was interesting and a decent read, I didn't mind the pacing, but this didn't make me just love the writer/story. I wasn't super fan of some of the language as I'm a bit super conservative. What am I missing?

    • @thecommonplacehomeschool
      @thecommonplacehomeschool  ปีที่แล้ว +4

Really?! Ugh, you hurt me. Just kidding.
I'm also a conservative gal but what I love about Hannah Coulter is not that it's a picture of virtue (Many of the characters are lovers of vice and the consequences in their lives are painful and realistic.), but that Hannah is slowly plodding in the direction of truth, goodness, and beauty-however imperfectly.
One of my favorite commonplace quotes from the book:
“You mustn’t wish for another life. You mustn’t want to be somebody else. What you must do is this:
      Rejoice evermore.
      Pray without ceasing.
      In everything give thanks.
I am not all the way capable of so much, but those are the right instructions.”
I think the story reflects the common woman's experience in this vein and I gathered much encouragement and wisdom from Hannah in both the good and bad she cultivated.

You have no idea how happy it'll make my husband that you put Neil Postman on your list. He wrote his Honors Thesis for his Politics Degree analyzing President Trump's campaign through the lens of Neil Postman's ideas.

Amusing Ourselves to Death should be required reading for all! I love finding others who know Postman!!
