    Regarding the service manual. I was able to find this: www.manualslib.com/manual/669621/Sony-Vaio-Sve14a-Series.html
    Here is another source for some Sony Vaio manuals: www.laptoprepair101.com/service-manuals-for-sony-vaio-laptops-notebooks/

    Good to see this VAIO being able to do the simplest upgrades, which is what I enjoy about these older 2010s chunky consumer laptops.

    I have fond memories of owning the tiny Sony Vaio UX UMPC and the Vaio Picturebook. The last Sony I bought was the Duo 11 before Sony closed all of its Australian Stores back in 2013.
    Sony always had amazing innovations and creative ideas when their laptops were still designed and manufactured in Japan but unfortunately they just could not compete in the cheaper market which is a shame.

    this would actually appeal to me if the price was on point for retro/portable older games, 3rd gen intel cpus are a favourite of mine

    I have a Sony Vaio SVE15133CNB it came with intel i3 3120m 2 gb ram and 500 gb hdd. I have upgraded the ram to 8 gb and hdd to an ssd and the machine runs pretty awesome till now for all basic to moderate tasks without any hangs.

    I had an SVE15, the graphics card died a hot summer day 4 years after purchase. Replaced the motherboard, added an SSD and now it's my father's, still going strong in 2021

    On the design front, Vaio age really well. I still have a 17" 16:10 vaio from 2005 with 2GB RAM and a Core Duo + Radeon X600.

    Hmm did you use this much on windows 10?, from that clean windows install I think maybe no. I had the sve14-something with touch where they slapped a very airgapped touchglass over the screen. They had some production issues getting the glass screen to be defect free, there would be some micro scratches on some units which would magnify a pixel underneath and make it look rainbowy. The amd-intel switchable graphics driver would make windows 10 sporadically freeze so it was one of the few laptops that couldn't really be upgraded from 8.1 to 10 due to that. I assume the same would be for this one if it was the same generation, which I think it might be judging by that windows 8 keyboard. And yeh the hard drive is dog slow I don't know how I put up with it. Usb ports went very loose connectiony over time to the point where I couldn't trust them with a usb hard drive. the Exmor "HD" webcam never came with drivers to allow it to do more than 480p. The SD slot isn't bootable, but I guess that's not too uncommon. Quite a thick and heavy laptop for the time, very economy. The plastic hinge on mine went, and then the glass separated off and dust got in between, aaand bits of plastic became brittle and broke off at the heatsink area. And I wasn't even rough with this thing. Terrible machine in hindsight lmao.

      It was their economic line afterall. Most laptops on the channel are flashed with a fresh install when I go to film. Makes things easier.

    Bought this laptop new in 2014 and has not given me one issue. I did upgrade to a SSD drive which turbo boosted performance.

    Good review. I use this laptop. As you said, the cooling is not great. I upgraded the RAM to 12GB and installed a SSD drive. Do you know if the CPU could be upgraded too? Id yes, Could you recomend an option to me?

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some models are soldered CPU. Ultimately, you'll be limited by the thermal cooling capacity of the heatsink. There is some good discussion about it on a forum here.

    I was never a huge fan of the SONY VAIO lineup, as I always thought they where a bit pricey vs. the specs you where getting, and I think that's why SONY did not do so well in markets outside of Japan.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Going to have to agree. I'm sure the quality was fine, but the name fetched a price.

    • @RoxGYT
      @RoxGYT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, before Windows 8 came out, they were doing really well in markets outside of Japan. Around the release of Win8, it started going downhill. And Sony made exceptional designs at the time, especially on high-end models, and if you had the money, the high-end models were well worth it.

      Years ago I bought an Acer laptop with an 18.4"(I think) screen. I returned it the next day because of all the weird proprietary software that it had to run it's odd audio-video and other buttons. But that would make a fun item for Laptop Retrospectives to review.
