I used to play the clarinet in elementary school. I got kicked out of band class because my math was so bad so I have to take extra math classes. then I never played the clarinet ever again. now I'm in college, and my clarinet is still in my room. I hope one day I'll try playing it again. I completely forgot how to though.
Trey Litle In a way I agree, and I'm always changing my personal philosophy on this. Playing G, F, E for the first three notes is indeed easier from an airstream and dexterity perspective, but some teachers argue (including myself) that this is a very "unsteady" position and leads to less than ideal posture, with smaller students feeling inclined to grab the clarinet by the bell or hold it between their knees for support. Also, the fact that no finger holes are closed disorients the student and they feel inclined to look down at their hands. Learning E, D, C first, while slightly more challenging, gives you the advantage of proper instrument support, and being in a major key right away that lets you learn simple songs like mary had a little lamb and hot crossed buns within minutes. Personally, I teach students under 12 A, G, F first, and I have them use a neck strap if possible. This also puts them in a major tonality, but prevents any issues with dexterity and finger size. Anyone 12 and over (or with larger hands) I will have learn E, D, C though.
The reason why people say it's E D C might be because they want to try to play a song that most people know why is Hot Cross Bun. Doing open G it's not as easy to find a song. Also, for open G some people recommend play G with your right hand down because the tuning is better.
I just wanted to thank you for your wonderful tutorials. You explain things very simply and thoroughly, and it makes learning the clarinet relatively simple and pain free. Cheers!
man these videos are so so helpful. i've recently started teaching myself flute and clarinet and came across your starter videos for both and they're invaluable. thanks so much!!
Don't just blow... to initiate the tone, place the tip of your tongue against the tip of the reed and opening of the mouthpiece and say (not really with your vocal chords) "Dah". This is called "tonguing". This should be taught from the very beginning
I am playing clarinet for middle school and hopefully a long time after and I chose it today and the guy said he think I will play it good and I would be a good player and with you helping you could really improve anyone!
This is really helping me a lot I already remember my C D E F G notes and I’m barley starting tomorrow I’m so excited but nervous thank you for the help:)
I love your videos! I don't even play the clarinet, I play violin. I want to buy a clarinet one day though so I can actually learn how to play it. Most of my friends play it, and I just think that it is a beautiful instrument. Even just watching you play in your videos is great!
Hi. I'm 13 years old and currently play flute, saxophone, percussion and piccolo but am thinking about playing clarinet as well! I just love the timbre and sound of the instrument. Can anyone recommend any good (but not too expensive) brands/models for a beginner??
I just got a clarinet today and every time I play C, it sounds like A. Is it because I have a different type of clarinet or am I doing something wrong?
About to buy my first clarinet - also playing saaphone as a beginner - not sure if its the right thing to do but love the sound of the clarinet - anything I should be aware of on the change - I intend learning both hope that is not to conflicting - appreciate any advice rendered
Hi teacher. I have 3 questions: why when you play those three sounds in your clarinet fingering are exactly like Bb, C, and D in my keyboard? How come when I play my clarinet, the same fingering sound as A, B, and C# in my keyboard? Why are called C, D and E sounds when in my keyboard are another up sounds iof those you were playing and the ones I was playing too ? It is very confused for myself. Please tell me why...
Hi Mr. Selfridge I am significantly better at playing CDE since starting to practice only 4 days ago. I am hearing a buzz when I play however is this because of the way my mouth is around the clarinet? Any suggestions to remove the buzz?
Mr Selfridge can you help me playing my clarinet. Im having a hard time playing high register notes.i dont know if its because of the technique (embouchure) I am using or I assembled the reed and mouthpiece incorrectly. I am using 2 and 2 1/2 reeds.
hey guys I got my clarinet a few days ago and when I make sound I have a iry sound. the sound is coming out fine, but I could hear blowing. if you reply thanks
make sure that it is properly put together and that the right valves are pushed down, if it still does, then I don't know because I am a beginner, hence why I am here.
I've played the oboe for about 2 years and I want to pick up the clarinet Do you think it will effect my oboe playing? If my skill level matters I'm first chair in a middle school varsity band
Can someone help me with my high notes? I squeak all the time. My band director put his mouthpiece on my clarinet and high notes sounded fine. So could it be something with the reeds? If it is what hardness should I get to hit the high notes?
It's because the clarinet isn't a concert pitched instrument. Concert pitched instruments, like piano, are considered C instruments. The clarinet is a B flat instrument. What this means, is if the piano plays a B flat, you'll play a C to match it. All you have to do is go up two half steps (or keys) or a full step to figure out what you should play, or go down the same to change from clarinet to a C instrument.
Hi..my only concern is that your E was actually a D, your D was a C, and your C was an A#! I have a note recognizer app on my phone, which I checked with online tone videos. Aren't you supposed to adjust the instrument to get the correct note? No offense, but just checking.
hi mr. selfridge, today i play first time my clarinet,i am a beginner used a vandoren reed number 3,5,was a disaster,i don,t like the sound,i can,t say is the clarinet because is one RC OF BUFFET CRAMPON,i buying 0ne month ago¡¡¡¡¡¡
Jan Klaassen dude 3.5 vandoren? That's like a 4 rico Reed. I'm in my 6th year and I only use a 2.5 vandoren. Lol you got a while to go before using that size
I'm a beginner and starting today I hope I like it
+MrSelfridge thank you this helps alot

The first note anyone should learn on the Clarinet it an open G. No fingers down, just your finger on the thumb rest and your mouth on the mouthpiece.

Yes but if you start on G then you can teach hot crossed buns as A G F instead.
I found my clarinet that I haven't touched in like, 8 years. Im inspired to play again.
I just wanted to thank you for your wonderful tutorials. You explain things very simply and thoroughly, and it makes learning the clarinet relatively simple and pain free. Cheers!

Could you make a fingering chart for clarinet? I run into E# sometimes & I don't know which key to press, is it the same as the F key? Or F#?
In music there is no E#, it is the same as an F. Just as there is no B#. Remember E#=F, B#= C. Hope this is what you meant :)
Andres Ramirez weird! lol they have some weird ways in those notes sometimes lol
I can do everything good except my band face, I do it but when i blow theirs no sound. Any help? (Im
using my brothers account)

As a flute player trying clarinet i can say you can easily play 35 notes without havinv to breathe (on clarinet)
Is it possible for a trombone player to play the clarinet?
Poof Edits if you practice... you can play anything
At least I'm playing this next week thursday
Wait why is c b flat and d c and e d? When I matched the notes on my piano c natural was b flat and d natural was c and e was d.
I'm consistently playing my three notes flat, the E registers as a D and the D as a C and so on. suggestions?

Hi..my only concern is that your E was actually a D, your D was a C, and your C was an A#! I have a note recognizer app on my phone, which I checked with online tone videos. Aren't you supposed to adjust the instrument to get the correct note? No offense, but just checking.
