When Covid-19 has you stuck inside and you remember your sax that's been in a closet for 20 years! Thank you so much for helping me remember and start over!
Mr. Melby, a current member of Better Sax says: Former technical writer here. Most people do not get how to teach. They cannot decenter from their knowledge and understand how the complete novice thinks, what questions they have, the order of questions, and where they are likely to get lost or confused. Jay is a natural teacher, and that is quite rare. He really understands how to reach the learner, how to approach the subject matter, how to anticipate questions and problems. No question, the best introductory course to sax on the Internet, bar none.
Absolutely, no doubt. I've played multiple instruments for years and never had the time to pick up the saxophone. I finally do. He's taught so much already and I'm just now getting to fingerings. I ALREADY feel very comfortable with the instrument. Idk how much money this guy makes but he deserves more! lol
At the middle of 9th grade, I got the chance to join my HS band, so I chose the saxophone. This was the first video I watched to help me start learning. Now in 10th grade, I’m able to play all the music in my concert/marching band.
Got my first sax yesterday, didn’t have a clue what to do when opening the case, but this course had me assembling the sax properly and playing my first notes in 30 mins. Brilliant. When f2f lessons start in 2 weeks I’ll be feeling comfortable. Thanks! 🎷 👏
Good afternoon sir my name is Billy I am 44 years old this is the first time picking up a saxophone and I cannot thank you enough for all your help and your tips I look forward to seeing much more of your lesson videos by the way I did pick up the AS-400 JP Thank you for your helpful video on this instrument
How do you like the AS-400, I’m about to get one, based off Jay’s recommendation. I’m brand new to the sax as well also at 44, sowe we got little in common!
Pulled the sax from the closet out the other day... literally 20 years+. I am so happy to have come across this channel. Thanks for all the great info and am excited to learn much as possible during this down-time, we all seem to have these days. Saxophone Reboot Camp. :)
Thank you so much, I’m 67 years old, guitar player for 50 years, getting an old tenor sax next week. I’ve always wanted to learn, so I just found you on here, and watched your first 4 videos. Even with no Sax yet, it’s getting me prepared for it. Thanks so much for doing these, really appreciate it, can’t wait to start up!
Thanks.now a days all these saxophone sounds are available on keyboards like Casio and others upto the mark. I am a musician and saxophone lover...I am from India. Your programme is a grand one
Jey, I’m 79 years old and I just got my Better Sax saxophone yesterday and started practicing what you teach in those videos and you make things so ease that one can’t believe it. That’s what I said that you are the best.
After taking sax lessons 30 years ago and stopping, with Covid-19, I have found myself taking up lessons in how to play a sax once again, even went so far as to purchasing a Yamaha Alto last week. Your videos have helped immensely and I just want to say thank you for your video tutorials.
I graduated 2 years ago & I haven’t played my sax since sophomore year of high school, I wanted to start playing again & this course helped me get back into it, thank you!
I'm speechless..... You are a great teacher... Your contributions for music, creating musicians/saxophone players and music lovers will be remembered by the present and generations to come...... NDG-India
I bought my Saxophone some twenty eight years ago from New York and now I am trying to learn, just for the fun of it and also its a beautiful looking instrument. I know you don't feel like you want to believe me, but thats the truth. My dream is to play the Saprano Saxophone. Better Sax you are a good teacher !
I like this teacher so much that I'm tempted to sign up for the play sax by ear course. But then I remember that I started learning sax to work on my reading, so maybe I'll leave it for the moment.
Thank you for your continued support, Jay...."gotta rest my embouchure!" An hour of practice surely does help, but man, my face aches heh heh heh! Shall be re-visiting this video for sure. Beginner at 54 bah, who says one is too old? "Get your sax on!" Peace
thank you SO much for this video. I’m in 8th grade and I’ve been playing the flute for 3 years, and I’ve recently decided to learn sax for jazz band. I really want to be in my highschool jazz band next year because they are the best in my state! just got my sax today. thanks for this- super clear and informative 👍
I really appreciate your effort so far,I bought a saxophone here in Nigeria since last week Friday but I have been confused and reluctant on how to start. The above lesson has given me courage to even couple my saxophone.i will really be happy to get better links on beginners class. Thanks.
I just started practicing my Alto Sax few days ago. I haven't practice in about three years as a beginner. I have to learn all over again. Your videos has encourage me to want to learn to play. Thanks.
I started playing saxophone last week and this is the best instructional video series I have seen in my life. Contains everything you need to learn from scratch. Thank you for that!
I am a brand new beginner at age 77, and have gone through the first 4 lessons twice, three times for lesson 4. having trouble with consistency on my sounds after "E' with my new Jane Paul T-400. Checked my reed setting it appears to be fine. Hoping it is my Embouchure not my mouth piece. Jay you are doing a excellent job on your instruction and over all knowledge. I have watched your presentations for the last 7 months prior to getting my sax ; now having a lot of fun. I'll get there. thank you much W. Jim Goodrich ; Rocklin, CA
Very helpful as I am a senior trying to learn a new instrument which is a very cheap one. I can't invest in something that may or may not be something I can continue. This is a very good lesson in that I am learning to just build up enough wind to put out a good sound. My goal is to play well enough during our visits to the nursing home that they can enjoy the relaxing sounds of hymns before prayer.
Really useful. As a studied guitarist I bought saxophone for fun. After watching all the videos with mouthpiece, embouchure and position of wrist, I was shocked, of how many more details I could adjust. I had a physically pleasant long session of playing. Only the third one! Thank you so much. And as a didgeridoo player, maintaining a circular breathing, and so the infinite tone is great to play with positions of embouchure. So many options...
I tell you these first four lessons are so well constructed as to be all the foundation someone needs to get a solid foundation of the basics, in order to actually start lessons on playing!! I've never experienced beginning lessons in person let alone on line that are so complete.
When I bought my Alto Saxophone 8 years ago ( I was 59 years old) because I wanted to learn how to play sax but never get around to do it. There is a negative side for the Covid-19 but the best part is the positive side - due to lockdown, I am able to start learning to play through this beginner course. Thanks to this excellent online course.
I just love the sax. My first was a plastic toy. I have since played in HS band, numerous rock and soul bands. I recorded and produced 3 CDs and to tell you the truth I am no better than I was years ago.I got into a lot of bad habits and never furthered my education in theory and solos and such. Yah I was able to blow out some runs and trills but nothing structured. I gave up playing 20 years ago. But now I am " RELEARNING" the sax thanks to you. I am pushing 70 and i have emphysema. So I am also using the horn as a tool for pulmonary exercise. But I desire to get better. And I am looking forward to more of your lessons. Thank You,
2-3 times thru your beginner series and I’m playing the first line of Amazing Grace... pretty amazing, and FUN! Ready to roll on your PSBE course! Thanks!!
Great lesson. I played the clarinet in school for 5 years and getting ready to buy an alto sax a whole 42 years later in memory of a dear friend. You’ve brought back memories. Thank you!
Hi Jay! Finally picked up the alto sax after a longggggg delay. It's been a little over 2 weeks now but have been finding your videos very inspirational and helpful! Thanks for all your doing to strengthen the sax community!!
Awesome, guide for an absolute beginner (that being me). I love the saxophone! Count me in as a subscriber (yet to get a saxophone, your way of teaching has immense benefits). Thanks a million for taking the time and putting in the effort to help others 👍

Thank you, I have had my sax for over 14years and never had the chance to learn to play it. Your videos explains really well, for me the best so far. Have subscribed look forward to playing my sax finally ❤️ Thank u
Was trying to play for over a year my sound is still awful haha gonna start checking your videos, this will be the first thing i'll practice tomorrow morning!!! Thanks for your content, you're a lifesaver in this weird times
I just started. Originally a trombone player. I’m 33. My birthday was 7/26 and my coworker bought me a sax 🎷.. I ordered size 2 reeds. And here I am almost a month later playing c’s g’s and d’s and using the octave button! I’m excited and I loved this video. Will definitely be coming back and watching more! Be sure to stayed updated with me and my journey on my TH-cam page
Thanks to you Jay (plus a Covid-19 Lockdown) 29 years later I’ve got my tenor sax out of the attic. Your lessons and teaching style have inspired me to get going again...
Thank you so much for telling us play again and again- I’ve played the piano for over 30 years and I’m still getting used to pushing down more keys on the Sax for one note!
thank you for the help! i went from choir to band and i just got my instrument and ive learned so much from you in only 4 hours worth of practice because I haven't started my lessons yet. Thank you so much!!
I will say this again, Jay puts on the best sax content on youtube. Period. I like to put his new sax beginner course to stream to my tv while I do my warm up session. This video in particular can help improving your sound while you listen to the way he plays every note. Thanks for the more than superb content Jay.
You’re an excellent tutor! I feel like I’m getting better with my alto each time I watch your videos! Thank you so much. Can you do a video tutorial on the saxophone for the song “turn the page” by bob seger?
Wow, I’ve seen other video where the guy teaches same notes but the way he was holding the sax I couldn’t see what buttons he’s pressing. This is clear and great tutorial! I play many instruments but always wanted to learn sax and at age of 33 I finally got myself a decent sax and with your help slowly getting there! Thanks👌🏻
When I started learning to play my tenor sax, we didn’t have internet! Let alone TH-cam! If you were lucky, you’d get hold of a book with cd. That was it! Now, I have you! You’re a very talented instructor! Thank you very much for all your structured teaching!
I played the sax for 3 years about 30 years ago but work and family life became too busy. Now I have retired, I've just dusted my sax down and cleaned it up. I was searching TH-cam for some instruction and came across your lessons - brilliant. Very easy to follow and very intuitive. I just want to thank you for making even more enthusiastic about re-learning
I've been following now for 2 years, waiting until I finally had enough to get my hands on an alto sax. This is a simple, to the point tutorial on how to get started with notes that a complete beginner like me needs
At 62 I am picking up a new hobby, Thank you for making it so much fun. I enjoyed the 1st four lessons so much and learned so much it is amazing =. Once I get this down I will be ordering your other classes.
Very comprehensive and easy to follow. Thankyou. I'm new to learning the sax. I bought both an alto and tenor with the aim of being able to swap between the two, as and when necessary. I do have a background of playing bass trombone classically, but this seems far more fun and you make it so easy to learn. I've had the saxes for a couple of weeks and already I've invited my mom over for coffee so I can play for her. Wish me luck! xx
Your email about this video suggested I probably already know where to put my fingers, but I can tell you that after 6 years in school band and playing in a community big band, it wasn't until I took private lessons as an adult that I was told about using the bis key. Your videos are super helpful!
I quit the sax 4 years ago simply because I wasn’t too fond of the people I was in band with, but I suddenly feel my passion for the instrument returning & wanna start over! This video was a nice refresher, thanks for the video❤️🩹
So glad I found and subscribed to your channel! Although I can play my Alto sax pretty well (by ear and trial and error), I've learned a lot in just watching a few of your B/R videos. Your graphics are clear and highlight/call out key areas of focus, and your instruction guarantees that I'll become better with practice. Thanks for offering the FREE B/R course and for providing interviews with dynamic and talented sax artists and teachers like yourself!
Thank you for this video! I'm a clarinet player and just picked up learning the tenor saxophone, this video has been more than helpful. The embouchure was definitely the most challenging, but your previous video explained it very well.
Same here, got loads of time on my hands due to Covid, so bought an Alto Sax. Already play guitar mandolin and a bit of banjo, so whilst I have an understanding of how music works playing the Sax is a whole new ball game. You videos are so useful thanks.
I bought a sax from my friend today and this is my first time I get my hands on sax. Made my first sound after trying for about a couple of minutes and excited about it. I hope these videos will get me started for my practice for real
Got my new sax from your link today. I got through the first 4 lessons and I'm feeling good so far. Time to call it a night and pick it up tomorrow and maybe do a refresher on lesson 4. Thanks
Thanks Jay! I play Alto Saxophone, and at first, I couldn’t get the low E and D to come out good, but now it’s a lot easier for me. I just had to have a consistent and relaxed embouchure.
your lessons are the best by far, im a new rookie to the saxophone as ive never even held 1 or played 1, but ive always been a lover for the sound they produce, i purchased a tenor saxophone 2 days ago and couldnt even make a sound, now im finally getting sound through and beginning to make some sort of sounds, il be sure to watch the other lessons but for now, im trying to perfect the sounds 👌👌
This video, with the fingering chart, is almost too good!!! I really like the way you showed the musical notes on the staff along with the fingering in the video. Having not read all of the comments for this vid, mine may be redundant, but I wanted you to know for sure that, in my opinion, you're doing it RIGHT!!
Derrick Robinson. Great beginning and good start. You are encouraging and motivating with good instructions. Just bought my first alto sax. Waiting for delivery but not to start learning the basics. Thank you for doing this.
Honestly thank you so much I got my Sax yesterday and thanks to you I know the right way to blow posture and now notes I have been rewatching for 4 hours and I have seen slot of improvement on my playing thank you so much
Wonderfull and Helpfull course Jay, whoohaa. Started studying tenor sax, online, in sept. 2019, working with Berry as guide, teacher. We work "Old School", sheet music - Now Iam practicing line 51 and my Friend, so many mistakes - wrong settings in my studying. Where is Your talent, Your joy, Your sharing, Your music...not in studying sheet music I can feel so clearly now, so thank You Jay for showing up within awareness with all Your Love and sax skill, in deep deep gratitude, thank You. Now example, trouble with middle d, practicing for 2 weeks now and when blown after b...all directions, no solid tone, trying to fix? adjust embrouchure - new reed, noop. Today I journeyd with Armani, dog, and the nek and mouthpiece, practicing embouchure, haha, YES I should have started there, again thank You Jay.
very useful I buy a sax yesterday after one week with trumpet and clarinet and with 3 notes only Im doing beats that get coworkers dancing this is so exciting ! great teaching techniques! thanks
Thank you so much for these videos. I just got a sax for Christmas and I’ve learned so much with your videos. I already play bass and guitar so your videos are super easy to follow and understand
Thanks so much I just started playing the alto sax for about 3months now and I have already developed a beautiful tone and range. I have challenged myself to learn Kenny G Forever In Love song and I am making amazing progress. Thanks Again!
Hey man. I really appreciate that you have made these videos. I’m originally a Bb clarinet player and I’ve been wanting to learn the alto saxophone. This is extremely helpful for me and definitely helped me on the right foot. Thanks bro 👍
By far the best beginner tutorial I have seen. I just bough my first ever musical instrument, a Yamaha alto sax. Hoping to play Pink Floyd and Gato Barbieri - Europa within six months. I have never attempted to play any instrument so this seems a bit daunting without having done anything more but watch this video.
Hi Jay, I know about your full course on "Playing by ear" (Pentatonic Foundation), from the beginner's stage to advanced stage. I would like to know if you will provide a full course on "Playing by sight", from beginner's to the advanced stage. I've really enjoyed this particular video. You're a great teacher. Thank you very much.
I am so grateful to have found Jay's Better Sax educational website. After watching lesson 1 of Jay, I already found his teaching is so clear and all the essences are there, no wasting time. His concise and precise explanation no doubt benefits tons of learners. Thank so much Jay.
*envious clarinet noises while looking at the octave key* Thanks for this video! My goal this year will be to start playing the sax next to my main instrument clarinet. Looking forward to it and these videos will definitely help!
Thanks for the video, I really appreciate that, I didn't thought that It'll be this easy learning sax, and I can't wait to receive the pdf because I've send the request a few times.
Back to my Sax after 50 years. This refresher is very good.
Thank you
When Covid-19 has you stuck inside and you remember your sax that's been in a closet for 20 years! Thank you so much for helping me remember and start over!
I am here for the exact same reason!!!!
same here Haha

Thank you.
Thanks👌🏻
One of the best course I have come across so far
When I started learning to play my tenor sax, we didn’t have internet! Let alone TH-cam! If you were lucky, you’d get hold of a book with cd. That was it! Now, I have you!
You’re a very talented instructor! Thank you very much for all your structured teaching!
Thank you so much! I recently decided to pick up the saxophone as my fourth instrument and this helped a lot!
Richard; your note made me rethink my old saxophone days. Thanks. One is never too old.
I've been following now for 2 years, waiting until I finally had enough to get my hands on an alto sax. This is a simple, to the point tutorial on how to get started with notes that a complete beginner like me needs
I felt the same way until I found used rentals. Only costing me 30$ a month to get started on an instrument that's worth 2 grand new
At 62 I am picking up a new hobby, Thank you for making it so much fun.
Wish me luck! xx
the way you teach is simple and nice it's easy when a beginner can find a teacher that has a style of teaching best for the student style of learning
Your email about this video suggested I probably already know where to put my fingers, but I can tell you that after 6 years in school band and playing in a community big band, it wasn't until I took private lessons as an adult that I was told about using the bis key.
Your videos are super helpful!
Yeah lots of important info gets left out often.
I quit the sax 4 years ago simply because I wasn’t too fond of the people I was in band with, but I suddenly feel my passion for the instrument returning & wanna start over!
This video was a nice refresher, thanks for the video❤️🩹
Thanks! I started out band this year and it's really hard to learn socially distant when I can't tell or see what to do. This really helps a lot!
I recently started playing on a Conn stars and stripes alto sax and this series has really helped me about not knowing what to do next,
So glad I found and subscribed to your channel!
I just started learning from scratch and this is a better way of learning. This helpful, thanks James.
Same here, got loads of time on my hands due to Covid, so bought an Alto Sax. Already play guitar mandolin and a bit of banjo, so whilst I have an understanding of how music works playing the Sax is a whole new ball game. You videos are so useful thanks.
Than you for making this I just got my first saxophone yesterday from my band class and now I can play so many notes already!
Very helpful, especially using the octive key. You explained that key better than anyone else. Thank you
I bought a sax from my friend today and this is my first time I get my hands on sax.
Very clear and concise. Enjoy all your videos being a beginner but an older individual. Thanks
Thank you sir, because of visual school i was a bit behind on band, i decided to teach myself and you helped me more than my book!
Same!
Thank you - also for speaking english very clearly. I'm total beginner but it is so much fun. Greetings from Germany
You are my favorite Saxophone/Music Professor online! So much appreciated! Thanks!🎷❤️
your lessons are the best by far, im a new rookie to the saxophone as ive never even held 1 or played 1, but ive always been a lover for the sound they produce, i purchased a tenor saxophone 2 days ago and couldnt even make a sound, now im finally getting sound through and beginning to make some sort of sounds, il be sure to watch the other lessons but for now, im trying to perfect the sounds 👌👌
Thanks for these simple, clear, basic lessons. A friend of mine wants to start playing sax & I am recommending these for him to get started.
This video, with the fingering chart, is almost too good!!! I really like the way you showed the musical notes on the staff along with the fingering in the video. Having not read all of the comments for this vid, mine may be redundant, but I wanted you to know for sure that, in my opinion, you're doing it RIGHT!!
Thanks glad to hear it.
I'm new to know about Saxophone and I'm searching for good and easy learning experience. I found your lessons. Thank you so much master......🙏❤❤❤
Derrick Robinson. Great beginning and good start. You are encouraging and motivating with good instructions. Just bought my first alto sax. Waiting for delivery but not to start learning the basics. Thank you for doing this.
Picked up my baritone sax for the first time in 30 years. Thanks!
Honestly thank you so much I got my Sax yesterday and thanks to you I know the right way to blow posture and now notes I have been rewatching for 4 hours and I have seen slot of improvement on my playing thank you so much
Great lessons especially for beginners. The best you can find on the web. Completely professional website and excellent downloads !!
I would really love to get an alto sax but I don't have money to😭...I would b really happy if anyone can help me here🙏🥰
Thanks so much I just started playing the alto sax for about 3months now and I have already developed a beautiful tone and range.
Glad this has been helpful for you.
Check junk and spam folders. If not there send us an email BetterSax.com/contact
It is helpful hearing this to decide if I want to start with tenor or alto. Fingering is always welcome. Haven't found PDF .
Brilliant.... bought an Alto just to try out and been watching a few vids to get started...this is far the best...thankyou
Thanks!
Thank you Very much.
Brilliant lessons. Thanks so much 😊
