  • Initial testing of MiniTstops Yamaha WR250R "Daisy Chain" in stock form. It has an FMF pipe, K&N filter, and power commander, which came on the bike when he bought it. Unfortunately, in my excitement to get over to the shop to dyno test the bike, I failed to check and clean the air filter. It is not recommended to run a K&N air filter out in the dirt, it lets to much dust into the engine. It's recommended to use a well oiled foam filter, which will out flow, and keep dirt out of your expensive engine. Let's talk about some upgrades here folks!!
    If you have machining or Dyno needs, call up Lindsay Machine Racing folks, they're freaking awesome (801) 561-7081.

    I knew a clean air filter is the life of a motor and I knew a dirty one could rob you of power but I never thought it could rob you of 2 horse power. Cool info. Stay safe

    My dyno tuner, an authorized DynoJet Tuner, is tuning my wr250r that has a power commander v and said he could not tune the bike with the air box door off, says it's too lean and not enough fuel to match the air flow. He told me I would actually lose performance with the door off. But yet your dyno tuner gained an extra 2 hp with the door and air filter off, however, your tuner said it was at totally leaned out with the air filter removed. From my understanding being too lean can cause problems for your bike.

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +CycleCruza The air filter on this bike was really dirty, so there was very restricted airflow. By removing it, we restored airflow, and thus the gain in horsepower, even though it was slightly lean. ( This was just a pre-test on this motor before we modded it out, so didn't spend a lot of time tuning it) With a power commander, you can tune the air flow ratio to be perfect no matter what air situation you have. In other words, you could remove your airbox cover, and tune your bike with it off for 13.2:1 air fuel ratio (best ratio for the balance of max power and economy) and it would run perfectly. Whether you run an enclosed air box, or not, air filter or not (crazy) does not matter, as long as you adjust and tune your bike for proper air fuel ratio in that condition. Once the tune is right, you basically want to keep your bike in that configuration, or plan on a re-tune. Great observation bud.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrDuhfactor Thanks for the reply! I wish you could tell that to my tuner, he said he could not adjust my power commander with enough fuel to match the airflow with the modded air box door (cut out center of door and put foam filter there to keep dirt from coming in). I just gave a him a stock door amd had him removed the modded door. It was tough to argue with him because he is a former AMA superbike racer and team owner and he is an authorized dyno tuner for dynojet and has been tuning bikes for over 16+ years. I might take it to another tuner who specializes in dirt bikes and see they can do it. It doesn't look like he does dirt-bikes very often.

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, I can't believe he told you that, he should know better. The power commander can dump so much fuel in there, it would swamp your motor. You would not want him to tune a big bore stroked motor then, because the amount of fuel needed for Minitstops bike after boring and stroking was waaaayyyyyy more than what was needed to compensate for a completely open airbox. sorry dude.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MrDuhfactor My WR250r update: Dyno Tuner said there was a problem my power commander, one of the pins in the connector was pushed back, was causing it not to communicate properly. He completed the map for the stock door, now he's going to try and tune the bike with my air box door mod again (Door hollowed & covered with filter). So if the second map is successful I'll have two maps on my switch, one for the stock door and one for the modded door.

      Good call buddy, any well oiled foam filter seems to be pretty good. I remember years ago someone telling me not to run a K&N in the dirts, and my bike had one at the time. When I removed it, there was a track of dirt going right down the intake into the motor......Uni is a good one bro....

    This is going to be an awesome series BUT, I've heard horror stories of people who lose ALL reliability and longevity of a WR250r by chasing a couple horsepower. Some people can get those up to 35 horsepower on forums (Supermotojunkie etc.) but they blow up the same as motocross bikes, when if you're in the right state (Utah is a good one I hear) you can buy a motocross bike and for less money convert it to street legal.

    • @minitstop
      @minitstop 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is my concern as well. My 290 at home is already at 32hp and she's been just fine for more than 10,000 miles. If she blows up, I'll get her fixed/get a new one. No big deal ;)

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      FailsAndFights minitstop Most of the time, bikes blowing up are a result of taking excessive risks, and problems setting up a safe good tune. I've seen lots of motors blow up from bad tunes, and people messing with cam timing, not knowing what their doing, or not knowing where the safe advance limit is. My name is on this motor, so I'm not going to take any unnecessary risks to try and see who's motor will pull 1/2 horse more than the other.... If we can build a good, strong, safe motor that will last, I'll be a happy man.... and we'll do long term follow up and see how she does. This bike has a 6th gear, which is way cool, but yes, you can put lights on a motocrosser and make it street legal here. Good thoughts FailsAndFights.....

      MrDuhfactor I originally wanted a CRF450X. Remember that? :p. This deal was just too good to pass up.

    • @FailsAndFightsFNF
      @FailsAndFightsFNF 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      minitstop I just recently got a CRF450x, best bike I've ever owned :)
      BUT, you can only have so many bikes at once and a good deal is a good deal. I'd definitely put the 450x on the "bucket list" of bikes though. Gotta get one eventually, if I were you (you already have two badass 250s) I'd wait until fuel injected 450x's came out.
      I know mine actually dusts 450r's torque wise but fails horsepower wise. But while a 450r is on the rev limiter, I just shift to the next gear and blow past them. Electric start rocks too, you've never kicked a bike harder than a 450 4 stroke, even with auto decompress cams.

    Love the new intro, by the way! Yeah, we're not big K&N fans. We prefer a well oiled Twin Air filter for our DR650. Did you ever put Katsumi on the dyno after you finished her up? At any rate, this is going to be an awesome project. We love 250s!

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi folks!!! Top of the mornin' to ya! I never did put Katsumi on the dyno, but I'm tempted to do that at some point. I had trouble getting her clutch to hold the new horsepower and torque, and finally put in a monster set of clutch springs, which locks the clutch up good now, but you have to be popeye to pull the clutch in :( So, I've got some new springs to install and try that are 38# springs. Stock uses 25# springs, and I put 3 75# springs in, with 3 25# stock springs last time, TOO MUCH! Ha Ha!! So, I'll try 3 25# stock springs, and 3 38# springs, alternating every other one, and see if that works better. Once that's done, and I get a little free time, maybe I'll put her on to see what she'll do :) The DR is an awesome bike by the way!!

    The AFR looks like it moves around a bit, to be expected somewhat. Given the multiple runs, can you comment on what the average AFR profile was and how stock was the machine? I believe it had a pipe on it already (still had a cat or no?), and the airbox was stock (the flapper) except for the dirty K&N?
    I have a similar bike; 2018 with a FMF pipe and no cat. My curiosity is the consensus seems to say these bikes run lean. I do not see that from your dyno. I'm hesitant to remove the flapper...I'm not sure if it was supposed to work in conjuction with the EXUP exhaust valve or not, or what it's affects might be on the AFR in general. My guess is there's enough margin to work with.

    +M VICE You're making an assumption based on the limited view of this video. I cut out an hour of tuning without the air filter in place. It was me not checking the air filter before we dyno'd the bike, (Not the shops responsibility) and it was the actual dyno tuner who suggested looking at the air filter, and that's when we discovered it. I edited out all of that stuff, including the tuning time to make the video not an hour long. You need to get your facts straight before you go making negative comments about a highly skilled and reputable tuner.

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You do not need to upgrade the crank to do the Athena big bore kit. Yes, it is as reliable as stock with the Athena big bore kit. Even with the stroker crank and Athena big bore kit (309CC), the bike is still dead reliable. The first things to go on these motors is the intake valves at about 29k miles....If people do good upkeep by changing oil and filter regularly, and keep the stock air filter clean and oiled.

    Question: I have a K&N filter in my CRF250L and according to K&N specs, the filter they make for this is made to their dirt bike filter specs to cope with very dusty conditions. So I am wondering if the caution about K&N filters allowing dirt into the engine refers only to their road bike filters. Any thoughts?
    The reason I went with K&N is that the UNI Filter foam 2 stage filter made for this bike has problems with the outer foam not sealing will over the core foam and frame, allowing stuff through on the edges. Cool dyno run there. Looks like Minitstop is going to have an awesome ride.

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey buddy ;) We dont recommend any K&N filter be used for off road riding. If your staying strictly on the street, then its ok. Even the off road version is not as good at trapping out dirt than the stock filter. Their dyno tests show that the stock air filter flows better and traps dirt better than K&N does. They end up rebuilding engines all the time from use of a K&N filter, which didn't keep out dirt. Sorry bro.... There are better ways to gain a little power, like a properly dyno tuned bike will do very well with a stock foam air filter. Sounds like a great bike, good luck!

    • @Scoottoots
      @Scoottoots 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers, I appreciate the information. I'll rethink and maybe go back to the stock filter. Only problem there is the stock air filter is a paper element that costs over $30 each. Kinda sucks (pun not intended) if you ride in dusty conditions. That's why I initially went with the foam UNI Filter, but like I say it doesn't sit well and leaks dust through, plus it reduces the surface area on the throttle body side compared to stock by over 60%. Again, kinda suck, lol.

    Well, I'll give a thumbs-up but, considering how little MinuteStop weighs and his technical style, I would (personally) recommend against doing the Big-Bore and all that cam and valve work ... For the money, I doubt he would personally make that much more use of the added performance. ... I mean ... This is going to be a swell series, and all ... But I think that a properly tuned and jetted and piped STOCK displacement would be PLENTY of oomph for MinuteStop to utilize, in that UTAH terrain. ... JMO. ... Most of what he needs is torque and you could achieve that with sprockets and tuning and a tunable exhaust.

    • @minitstop
      @minitstop 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no jetting on a fuel injected bike :p It'll be just fine. I ride the crap out of my Athena'd/Power Commander/Full Exhaust WR290R here at home and yes, I use all of it's power and have been doing so for over 10,000 miles. Daisy Chain isn't staying in Utah. She's going to end up somewhere else that is a bit more...wet. :p
      I've already put a huge rear sprocket on Daisy Chain and she also has a two brothers pipe which is tuned by a Power Commander. Even with that, I was left aching for more power. It'll be just fine. This build is being done by professionals and not back yard broke-anics.

    Run bike with dirty filter. Measure HP/Torque. Remove air filter, run bike again. Measure HP/Torque. Gain HP/Torque and give high fives all around. I would steer clear of this dyno shop. Removing the air filter does not represent real tuning.

  • @OtisENGINEuity
    @OtisENGINEuity 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like how the guy said exactly what I always say.. that any engine can make more power with cams, bore & stroke, and a little porting.
    Does anyone make a cold air kit type intake for those? Instead of the stock plastic tube leading from the air box have a nice smooth aluminum tube with a cone filter or even a filter right on the throttle body? (which wouldn't be good with water but would be good any other time) With that much air going in he might have to step up to larger injectors too.

    • @MrDuhfactor
      @MrDuhfactor  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave has tried several different combinations of air filters, intakes, and even custom ones. He's dyno tested them, and knows exactly how much to cut off of which model to add one horsepower, etc. The problem with cone paper filters is that they don't flow well, and they don't keep the dirt out of the motor. They're much better suited for the street, and a cold air intake doesn't do anything positive on these kinds of bikes, the intake is so short anyway that there's literally 2 inches from the filter to the carb or throttle body anyway. He hasn't found that even removing the airbox completely makes any positive change, so I guess it's not a point of flow restriction. Good thinking though.
