Do you think it's possible to add an IR light to the room to be able to have video in pitch black? I'm thinking that most phones come with an IR filter, so this might not work. Night time is definitely a challenge. I know many phones do have IR filter, however an easy way to test would be point a remote with IR at your phone camera to see if you see slightly violet light. If you see if brightly then you should be able to use an IR light.

Honestly had no clue these apps were available. I feel great knowing I can do this on the cheap!

Awesome! Exactly what i was looking for to re-purpose my note 3 and tablet. I hope it's a trustworthy app as far as privacy goes.
Based off what I see, I currently leave towards being trustworthy. But it's hard to tell these days when even large companies can be iffy.

What is the furthest distance I can be at, while the camera is running, and not lose the connection?
It uses internet connection, so as long as both devices have a good connection you'll be able to view it regardless of distance.

Is service or wifi required for the 'baby station' phone ?
Wifi is required for the phone that’s acting as the camera.

Yup you can even use it as a indoor security camera if you want. Or pet cam haha

Unfortunately I don't think there's any way to download the video. Just monitoring. It detects sound rather than motion.
